AT&T-owned DirecTV Now is changing its name to AT&T Now. “In the coming weeks, your DirecTV Now app will change to AT&T TV, but will continue to deliver the same great streaming entertainment,” AT&T alerted customers. Service will continue without interruption. AT&T Now is not to be confused with upcoming streaming service AT&T TV, prepping for a beta launch this summer and aimed at lowering customer acquisition costs.
A former America’s Next Top Model contestant is suing Ryan Seacrest’s production companies and Bravo over a scene in the series Shahs of Sunset in which she appears nude, despite not giving permission to be filmed. In the suit filed July 25, Kiara Belen claims she appeared in an episode of the Bravo show that aired July 30, 2017, during which she was changing clothes in a private dressing room for models. Belen is suing Ryan Seacrest Productions, Ryan Seacrest Enterprises, and Bravo, seeking damages in excess of $100,000.
Viacom and The National Cable Television Cooperative (NCTC) renewed their distribution agreement allowing for continued carriage of Viacom’s media networks by NCTC’s more than 750 member companies. News came during the NCTC-sponsored Independent Show in Chicago.

Fashion designer Marc Jacobs will receive the first-ever MTV Fashion Trailblazer Award at the 2019 MTV VMAs, airing live on Monday, August 26. In partnership with The Council of Fashion Designers of America, Jacobs and his design team are working with MTV to create a multimedia activation on the red carpet highlighting his creative vision.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Fast Color, a TV series from Viola Davis and Julius Tennon’s JuVee Productions based on the 2018 sci-fi film, is in development at Amazon. The movie’s scribes Julia Hart and Jordan Horowitz and their Original Headquarters are also in on the series, as is Mickey Liddell’s LD Entertainment. The film, which revolves around three generations of black women at the center of a sci-fi universe, garnered critical praise when it debuted at SXSW in 2018.
FX Networks has ordered A Teacher, a limited series based on Hannah Fidell’s feature film of the same name and starring Kate Mara and Nick Robinson. Ten-parter is being produced by FX Productions.
HBO Max gave a straight-to-series eight-ep order to drama Circe, based on the Madeline Miller book of the same name. Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver will write and exec-produce, with Chernin Entertainment producing in partnership with Endeavor Content. Series is a modern take on the world of Greek mythology told from the powerful feminist perspective.
Black-ish exec producer Courtney Lilly will be showrunner of the ABC comedy series for its upcoming sixth season. He succeeds showrunners Kenny Smith and Jonathan Groff, who will remain on the show as consulting producers and focus on development under their overall deals with Disney TV Studios’ ABC Studios. Lilly also has an overall deal at ABC Studios and has been a writer on Black-ish since the show’s first season.
Apple is developing an English-language version of Israeli thriller False Flag for its forthcoming streaming service. The original Keshet International Hebrew-language series, created by Amit Cohen and Maria Feldman, first aired on Israel’s Channel 2 in 2015.
The Big Show Show, a half-hour family comedy series starring WWE superstar Big Show, aka Paul Wight, got the green light at Netflix. From WWE Studios and writers Josh Bycel (Happy Endings) and Jason Berger (LA to Vegas), 10-ep series revolves around antics after the teenage daughter of a retired WWE Superstar comes to live with him, his wife and two other daughters, rendering him outnumbered and outsmarted. Bycel and Berger exec-produce and will serve as showrunners. Susan Levison and Richard Lowell exec produce for WWE Studios.
Director Jody Margolin Hahn will helm the pilot and additional episodes of Netflix’s upcoming Latinx comedy series The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia. Series, co-created by Mario Lopez and Seth Kurland, producer of Speechless and Melissa & Joey, follows a15-and-a-half-year-old robotics engineer and rocket scientist who moves in with her fun-loving uncle when she gets the chance to work for NASA.
More action at Quibi, which see Kevin Hart starring in Action Scene, a comedic action/thriller based on the opening scene of Hart’s 2016 concert film Kevin Hart: What Now? His company Laugh Out Loud is producing. Exec-produced by Hart, and business partners Jeff Clanagan and Dave Becky, short-form series will feature Hart playing a fictionalized version of himself on a quest to land the action-movie role of a lifetime.
Hecho Studios launched a division dedicated to the development and production of non-fiction entertainment, headed by industry veteran Evan Rosenfeld as head of documentary and TV. Rosenfeld will oversee Hecho’s original unscripted TV and film business; first round of projects are social issues-driven stories with an emphasis on sports.
Courteney Cox is returning to Facebook Watch with her weekly docuseries about pregnancy, 9 Months with Courteney Cox. Series is the first project to come from Ample Entertainment‘s (Murder in the Heartland, Could You Survive the Movies) partnership with Cox’s Hopper Productions. Season 1 premiered in January. Ample Entertainment and Hopper Productions produce 9 the show; exec producers include Cox, Ari Mark and Phil Lott.
EstrellaTV is in production for season 2 of 100 Latinos Dijeron, and has incorporated comedian Mau Nieto as new host. Co-produced with Fremantle, the new season of a Spanish-language version of classic American game show Family Feud will premiere on August 14, 2019 at 7p.

VH1’s Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood returns Monday, August 5 at 8p. New season shines a light on the fundamentals of love, life and music in LA and features cast members Floyd “A1” Bentley, Lyrica Anderson, Fizz, Apryl Jones and more.
Acorn TV dropped a new trailer for My Life Is Murder, the Australian series top-lined by Lucy Lawless that makes its US premiere Monday, August 5 with two eps. Ten-part series follows a fearless private investigator and ex-homicide detective who solves the most baffling crimes, as well as coping with the frustrations of everyday life.
Homicide Hunter: Lt. Joe Kenda returns to Investigation Discovery for its ninth and final season on Wednesday, August 28 at 9p. During a 23-year career with the Colorado Springs Police Department, Kenda has identified money, sex and revenge as primary motives for the murders he’s solved with a 92 percent solve rate, among the country’s highest.
Cooking Channel is on the road this September with new culinary adventures. Carnival Eats, premiering Sunday, September 1 at 9p, features Noah Cappe traversing the country to find the most festive fare. Then, Jenny Dell and Troy Johnson visit college campuses across America to find the most unique restaurants on Campus Eats, premiering Thursday, September 5 at 10p.
Over at Cooking sister Food Network, Halloween celebrations begin as host John Henson and judges scare up a new season of Halloween Baking Championship premiering Monday, September 23 at 9p. Then, Kids Baking Championship: Tricks and Treats features four former kid competitors battling it out for a baker’s dream prize in this Halloween special on Thursday, September 26 at 9p. Halloween Wars returns with host Jonathan Bennett on Sunday, September 29 at 9p, with special Road to Halloween Wars premiering at 8p and giving a first-hand look at the journey to the new season. Four of America’s top pumpkin carvers come together for a Halloween pumpkin carving competition with special Outrageous Pumpkins hosted by Casey Webb premiering Sunday, September 29 at 10p. Lastly, Duff Goldman challenges four bakers to create the most ghoulish cakes in new series Halloween Cake-Off premiering Monday, September 30 at 10p.
BBC One delivered the first trailer for season 5 of period drama Peaky Blinders, slated to debut later this year. The one-minute teaser kicks off with a voice over from Tommy, the gangster-turned-Member of Parliament, who references the conclusion of season 4.
CollegeHumor dropped a trailer for Gods of Food, the mockumentary culinary profile series slated to debut Thursday, August 8 on its subscription streaming service Dropout. Six-part parody series will skewer the gamut of fine dining tropes, from the overly rustic chef to the esoteric molecular gastronomist, and will feature celebrity chefs Hugh Acheson (Top Chef), Richard Blais (Top Chef), Jet Tila (Food Network) and Alison Roman (The New York Times) commentating throughout each episode of the season.
COMING UP
In celebration of National Girlfriends Day, TV One will host a marathon of the series Girlfriends on Thursday, August 1. The marathon will feature fan-fave eps and air from 6a-6p. Series follows a group of tight-knit black women through the trials and triumphs of their professional and personal lives.
TECH TALK
The CW is adding a live, ad-supported linear extension of its digital network CW Seed, and PeopleTV is signed on launch content partner. CW Seed Live will debut in late fall via CWSeed.com and the CW Seed app, available via Roku, Apple TV, Fire TV, iOS, Android, Xbox, Chromecast and Android TV. CW Seed originally launched six years ago.
Although Apple bested Wall Street estimates for its Q3 earnings and revenue, iPhone sales came in lower than expected for the quarter. Earnings hit $2.18 a share, though profit was down from $2.34 during the same quarter a year ago. Total revenue came in at $53.8 billion, topping the projected $53.4 billion and ahead of the $53.3 million in the year-ago period. Revenue from the iPhone, which accounts for approximately half of the company’s sales, was $26 billion, short of the estimate for $26.5 billion. The Cupertino company’s share price ticked up 3 percent yesterday, after Apple projected a strong fourth quarter that will include the introduction of a new iPhone in September.
Music artist Drake, a superfan of the Toronto Raptors, is partnering with LeBron James and Maverick Carter’s athlete-centric brand and media business Uninterrupted on the platform’s launch in Canada. Uninterrupted Canada is the first international expansion for the company, which launched in the US in 2015 with backing from Warner Bros. and Turner. As in the US, the Canadian Uninterrupted shingle will produce “athlete-driven” content, events and merchandise. The company signed an exclusive first-look deal with Raptors star Serge Ibaka, and is producing a motivational series with pitcher Marcus Stroman, formerly with the Toronto Blue Jays and now with the NY Mets.
KIDS NEWS
Genius Brands International launched a Kid Genius Plus! service on Dish. With the launch, Genius Brands’ content is available to more than 80 million US households. Kid Genius Plus! comprises content from the Genius Brands Network, including a mixture of titles from Kid Genius Cartoon Channel and Baby Genius TV.
Pocket.watch partnered with production platform Tellie to premiere Picture This, a new game show hosted by Evan of EvanTubeHD. The first of two partnerships between pocket.watch and Tellie, the game showcases Evan’s drawing skills as he competes against his family members in a Pictionary meets HD-style trivia game.
PODCAST POSTS
National Geographic’s series Overheard at National Geographic, a short-form, fact-based podcast giving listeners an inside look into Nat Geo, launched its final episode for season 1. Titled “Honeybee Chop Shop,” ep features host Peter Guin talking writer Rene Ebersole and honeybee farmer Joe Romance to chat about the shady business of stealing bees.
WarnerMedia true crime podcast Somebody Somewhere debuted its final episode of season 2, with hosts/producers David Payne and Jody Gottlieb wrapping their venture into the “Jungle,” the homeless encampment in Seattle where a double murder occurred in 2016.

Dr Phil (2.2 live plus same day national Nielsen rating, steady with the week before) has entered the current syndication record books. The show drew nearly 3 million daily viewers and finished first among talkers for the 150th week in a row in the session ending July 21. Making the feat even more impressive, it has been completely in reruns for eight straight weeks. Coming in second for the 21st consecutive week was Live with Kelly and Ryan (1.9, steady), and rounding out the top 5 in the category were: Ellen DeGeneres (1.4, down 7%), Maury (1.2, unchanged) and Wendy Williams (1.2, unchanged).
At the top of the chart, Judge Judy (6.3, steady), despite being in reruns on two of the days, attracted more than 8.6-million viewers each day on average. Magazines mostly held their own week to week, while Access (1.1, up 10% from last year) scored the largest annual increase in the genre. Top quiz and give-away strips were a mixed bag. Family Feud (6.0, up 2%) led the field, while Jeopardy (5.5, down 2%) and Wheel of Fortune (5.1, down 2%) followed.
