07/30/19: The PGA TOUR’s new season will be its biggest yet with new events throughout the year


Good morning. It’s Tuesday July 30, 2019 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

The PGA TOUR is beefing up its game with an expanded 2019-20 season schedule that will feature 49 FedExCup tournaments, as well as a modified opening segment and several late-season adjustments designed to accommodate the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo. Overall, there will be three more tournaments this year, with eleven of the 46 regular eeason events set to be conducted in the opening portion of the schedule between September-November, including two new tournaments in The ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP in Japan and the Bermuda Championship, plus the return of A Military Tribute at the Greenbrier and the Houston Open following one-year absences. With the PGA TOUR season now ending in August at the TOUR Championship, the 2019-20 season will open the week of September 9-15 with A Military Tribute at the Greenbrier. The FedExCup Playoffs wrap up the Season of Championships, which begins with THE PLAYERS Championship (March 9-15) and continues through the Masters Tournament (April 6-12); PGA Championship (May 11-17); U.S. Open (June 15-21); and The Open Championship (July 13-19).
“After a very successful first year with our new schedule, we are thrilled to expand the number of events to 49 while maintaining a great flow from start-to-finish, allowing our fans to better engage and follow the TOUR throughout the season,” said PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan. “For the second year, we’re excited about kicking off the Season of Championships with THE PLAYERS in March, bookended by the FedExCup Playoffs in August, and the return of the Olympics in that window. As for the early-season portion of the schedule, our players grasp the importance of a strong start in the Race for the FedExCup and this has translated into growth and momentum for the events played in the fall.”

Speaking of golf, Woburn Golf Club in England will host golf’s final major championship of 2019, The R&A’s AIG Women’s British Open, running Aug. 1-4, with 45 total hours of tournament coverage on GOLF Channel and NBC, the most number of televised hours for an LPGA major championship in history. The two channels will combine to air seven continuous hours of live coverage each day for a total of 28 live hours as GOLF Channel offers live coverage from 6a-1p Thursday and Friday. Saturday sees the networks combine to air third round coverage (7-11a on GOLF Channel; 11a-2p on NBC). On Sunday, coverage will begin on GOLF Channel at 7a and continue on NBC at 11:30a until the tournament’s conclusion.
ESPN scored its highest-rated Sunday Night Baseball presented by Taco Bell telecast of 2019 this week with the Yankees win over the Red Sox. The telecast delivered a 1.9 metered market rating, up 73% over last year’s comparable game per Nielsen.
In talent news, FOX Sports announced that studio analyst Tony Gonzalez is joining the FOX NFL Thursday pregame show for the upcoming season. Beginning with Week 4, the revamped TNF pregame show will debut on Sept. 26 at 7:30p where he will join Michael Strahan, Terry Bradshaw and Howie Long. Gonzalez, who appears regularly on FOX NFL Kickoff will remain in his role on the pregame show each Sunday during the NFL season.
Meanwhile, ESPN signed former college football All-American and NFL All-Pro punter Pat McAfee to a multi-year agreement as a football analyst where he will be a commentator on both game and studio telecasts, including ESPN’s Thursday night college football slate and regular appearances on Get Up
Peyton’s Places, a 30-episode documentary series hosted by former NFL quarterback Peyton Manning, is officially live on ESPN+. The football-themed series is produced by NFL Films in collaboration with ESPN+ and is part of the year-long celebration of the National Football League’s 100th season.

The NBA and Tencent Holdings Limited, the Exclusive Official Digital Partner of the NBA in China, announced a five-year expansion of their existing partnership that will see Tencent offer extensive NBA coverage on its platforms through the 2024-25 NBA season, including live NBA games, NBA programming and interactive fan experiences. MMA promotion ONE Championship is starting to roll out its vision for the company’s foray into esports, announcing a familiar face who will be leading the charge, as well as a partnership for its upcoming events. Carlos Alimurung, who served as Chief Business Officer for Battlefy, is joining the company to serve as CEO of ONE Esports with the company’s first events set to take place in October in Tokyo and December in Singapore. ONE Esports’ first ONE Dota 2 Singapore World Pro Invitational, organized in partnership with PGL, will take place this year on December 20-22 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, followed by our second ONE Dota 2 Jakarta World Pro Invitational on April 17-19 next year at the Indonesia Convention Exhibition.
