Twitter is coming off a strong Q2, with revenue rising 74 percent year over year, to $1.19 billion. Twitter added 7 million new users during the quarter, which brings its total audience to 206 million daily users. Ad revenue on the platform totaled $1.05 billion, up 87 percent from the year-ago quarter and handily beating Wall Street projections.

Bitcoin will be a “big part” of Twitter’s future, according to CEO Jack Dorsey. The cryptocurrency could be integrated into Twitter commerce and subscription services, as well new features like the Twitter Tip Jar and Super Follows, Dorsey told investors.

Snap Inc. posted its highest year-over-year growth in revenue and daily active users in four years during Q2. Snapchat’s parent saw revenue reach $982 million for the period, up 116 percent compared with Q2 2020. Its daily active user tally reached 293 million, besting industry estimates. While the company remains unprofitable, it narrowed its net loss to $152 million during the quarter, a 53 percent improvement over a year ago.

Welcome to the Clubhouse: Live audio app Clubhouse, which launched with an invite-only system, is “now out of beta, open to everyone, and ready to begin its next chapter,” said co-founders Rohan Seth and Paul Davison in a blog post. “This means we have removed our waitlist system so that anyone can join. If you have a club, you can post your link far and wide. If you are a creator with an audience, you can bring them all on. If you’re hosting a public event, anyone can attend.”

NBCUniversal announced Ad-ID as its new standard for advertisers across One Platform, allowing NBCUniversal and its partners can access the metadata housed within the Ad-ID platform. NBCUniversal’s partnership with Ad-ID also encompasses collaboration on Ad-ID’s technology roadmap, including enhancements to Ad-ID’s solution for audience and contextual targeting. “At NBCUniversal, we are investing in data, technology, and partnerships that create the best possible viewing experience for our audiences, and the best advertising experience for marketers – but we can’t set a new standard for the entire media and marketing ecosystem alone,” said Krishan Bhatia, President & Chief Business Officer, NBCUniversal Advertising & Partnerships. “We are calling upon everyone—programmers, platforms, technology providers, agencies, and brands—to join us in changing the viewing experience for the better.”

In more NBCU news, NBC and Telemundo owned stations are introducing new mobile apps for iPhone and Android users. Updates include a redesign, a “dark mode” feature, “trending” and “discover” news feeds, precipitation alerts and customizable alert options.

Google’s Android Beta 3 was released, and as with previous versions, includes behavior changes to help improve performance, battery life, security, and privacy. “In some cases, these changes can affect apps until they are updated to support Android 12, so you might see impacts ranging from minor issues to more significant limitations,” warned Google, but “in general, most apps will work as expected.”

As the major antitrust lawsuit filed by 36 attorneys general reverberates, Google has said it will not enforce a September deadline requiring Play Store apps to switch to the Play Billing IAP system. Developers can request an extension.

Apple removed the Fakespot app after receiving request to do so from Amazon. Fakespot’s browser extensions attempt to eliminate fake product reviews, but Amazon claimed a new Fakespot update could potentially be exploited to steal customer data.

Globo and AI-driven sports video technology company WSC Sports announced a partnership to bring automated real-time video highlights and sports content to soccer fans in Brazil across Globo’s digital properties, streaming and social media. Globo will be using WSC Sports’ suite of technology tools to share content and engage with fans, while maximizing content production capabilities and advertising opportunities within their streaming platform, Globoplay, ge.globo and Youtube channel.

Playco, developer of instant gaming, has collaborated with Zoom Video Communications to bring two game apps for Zoom: a new version of Ellen DeGeneres’ hit Heads Up! and an ice-breaker game titled Ask Away. Both are fully integrated as Zoom Apps and accessible directly from Zoom meetings.

Two-thirds of marketers and advertisers support unified federal consumer regulations such as the California Consumer Protection Act and the Colorado Consumer Protection Act, according to a survey from Kubient. Of these respondents, their primary reasoning for supporting included the belief it would be simpler for marketers to follow these federal guidelines versus each state creating bespoke guidelines (34%); the belief that privacy regulations should be in place to protect consumers (26%); and nearly 20% believe we should model the GDPR regulation for new US federal privacy standards. While 88% of survey respondents indicated some level of concern on the increase of privacy regulation requiring a shift in strategies on reconcepting of campaigns, only 23% noting they were “extremely concerned” about the changes required.

LiveU, provider of live video streaming and remote production solutions, announced that investment firm Carlyle has acquired the company from Francisco Partners. Founded in 2006, LiveU is the pioneer of a bonded cellular technology-based live video transmission platform, offered to live broadcast news networks and sports content owners. LiveU’s technology enables customers to apply innovation and automation to the production workflow. “This is a significant milestone for LiveU and represents a strong vote of confidence in our business,” said Samuel Wasserman, CEO and Co-Founder of LiveU. “Carlyle brings deep industry expertise with their track record in the media and technology space alongside a global network.”

The depth of unique reach has yet to be unearthed, according to a study from Innovid, “Decoding CTV Measurement: An In-depth Look at Reach.” Across the study, done in partnership with the ANA, the average campaign reached only 13% of the available US CTV households. Other key findings include:
· The study revealed an average publisher duplication rate of 32%.
· CTV’s frequency problem is “highly exaggerated” – the average frequency was 4.6 across all campaigns.
· The average eCPM of the campaigns in the study was $23, which sits in between the average CPM for US primetime TV ads for broadcast and cable ($36 and $19, respectively).
“There’s a misconception that there’s not enough reach in CTV,” said Jessica Hogue, General Manager of Measurement and Analytics, Innovid. “However our study saw we’ve just scratched the surface of the potential reach for this channel.”

NBCUniversal and Sky introduced a new global consultancy and research arm centered around culture. Place Exchange, the supply-side platform for programmatic OOH and place-based media, announced the close of a $20 million Series A funding round. The investment was co-led by Revolution Ventures and Tribe Capital. The company will use the funding to broaden its product offerings, expand into new markets, and grow its team.

OOH specialist Talon America announced the launch of its proprietary data management platform, Ada, for the US market. Ada generates intelligence on real and recent audience behaviors in the physical world, including how people travel, the OOH inventory they engage with, and the actions they take afterwards. “With Ada, we’re democratizing access to data-driven insights for OOH audience targeting and measurement,” said Jonathan Conway, COO at Talon America. “Ada empowers advertisers to seamlessly extend their online targeting strategy into OOH, enabling them to always reach the most relevant audiences and more accurately analyze their behaviors after exposure to brand messages.”

WarnerMedia and Google are teaming for a promotional deal that bundles three months of HBO Max with the Chromecast adapter for an additional $15. The offer is available only to new subscribers.

Viewers are streaming more, but they’re also getting more frustrated with streaming, according to a new Penthera survey. Video viewers are watching an average 2 hours and 29 minutes, up 6% from last year, according to the survey, but 68% of respondents reported having a frustrating experience weekly, up from 55% last year. And they’re getting less patient with disruptions – 57% said they’d give up and try again later if viewing is disrupted, versus 39% in 2020.

Disney’s Hulu+ Live TV package is now available on Comcast’s Xfinity Flex service to high-speed internet customers. The basic on-demand version of Hulu with Live launched on Xfinity Flex and X1 in March 2020.

Altice USA introduced Optimum Stream and Suddenlink Stream, a new 4K streaming device available to the company’s broadband-only customers. Powered by Android TV OS, the new streaming experience offers customers access to thousands of apps and streaming services on Google Play and over 50 free live streaming channels. Customers can also do more on their TV using their voice by pressing the Google Assistant button on the remote to search for entertainment, control their TV and smart home devices, and more.

Performance marketing agency Tinuiti announced an agreement to acquire a purchaser of digital streaming media, Bliss Point Media, and its subsidiary, Prospect Point Media. The Santa Monica-based company provides a patented machine-learning technology to measure and optimize performance for brands like Fabletics, Instacart, Square, Thumbtack and Tonal. The deal will allow Tinuiti to accelerate its offering in OTT/ CTV and reintroduce Tinuiti’s OTT division as Streaming+.

Future Today announced the launch of streaming channels CoComelon and iFood.tv for VIZIO’s SmartCast TVs. Future Today has launched 13 AVOD streaming apps and four FAST channels on Vizio SmartCast TV’s, including flagship Happykids, FilmRise and Fawesome.

Redbox has partnered with Wurl, provider of streaming video distribution and advertising services for CTV, to facilitate and expand the selection of free channels on Redbox Free Live TV.

With more streaming entrants diving into the market, Netflix’s share of digital original audience has dipped to record lows, according to Parrot Analytics. In 2Q21, the demand share for all Netflix digital originals was 46%, down 5.3% from 2Q20, while Disney+ grew from 7.0% to 8.1%. The decline was not only due to increased competition, said Parrot Analytics, but a lack of new breakout original shows.

Canela Media, the AVOD streaming service for US Hispanics, has entered into a distribution partnership with UP Entertainment, home to UPtv, UP Faith & Family, AspireTV and Cine Romántico, that will make Cine Romántico available to Canela.TV’s US and Latin American audiences. Targeted to Spanish-speaking television viewers and dual language households, Cine Romántico features Hollywood TV romance movies in Spanish.

Circle Network has expanded to Canada, with new channels now available through streaming partners Samsung TV Plus, The Roku Channel, and LG Channel Plus.
