07/25/19: The Pac-12 Football Championship Game found a new home in Las Vegas


Good morning. It’s Thursday July 25, 2019 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

The Pac-12 Conference is doubling down on Las Vegas, announcing that the 2020 and 2021 host site for the Pac-12 Football Championship Game, presented by 76, will be at the new home of the Raiders. The announcement marks the second new event to be scheduled for the Las Vegas Stadium which is also set to host the 2020 Las Vegas Bowl, featuring a Pac-12 opponent against either a Big Ten or SEC opponent, after the event moves following the 2019 game. The city also hosts the 2020 Pac-12 Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments.
“Our Pac-12 universities and entire Conference are thrilled to have our 2020 and 2021 football championship event take place in one of the most anticipated new venues in sports,” said Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott. “Highlighting and showcasing our programs on one of the biggest stages in a major destination market is a tremendous opportunity for our student-athletes, universities and fans, and consistent with our mission to create the best possible experiences for student-athletes. We are excited to work with our new partners in the Raiders, Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority and MGM Resorts International for these events.”

Meanwhile, the Mountain West Conference is going the other way, and announced Wednesday that its marquee postseason college football bowl game will head to California, in a new event held at the NFL’s Los Angeles Stadium at Hollywood Park starting in 2020. The annual bowl game, which has yet to be named, will pit the Mountain West’s best against a team from a to-be-determined conference and replaces the conference’s previous affiliation with the Las Vegas Bowl.
NFL Media Group announced production of two new series – The NFL’s All-Time Team and The NFL 100 Greatest – designed to anchor NFL 100-themed programming and content premiering across the NFL’s television and digital platforms starting this fall. NFL Network host Rich Eisen joins Cris Collinsworth and Bill Belichick as hosts of The NFL’s All-Time Team. Over six episodes, Eisen, Collinsworth and Belichick will be joined by special guests to discuss the results of a 26-person blue ribbon panel tasked with crowning the NFL’s All-Time Team – the roster of 100 players and 10 coaches named “The Greatest” in their respective positions.  The “greatness” theme is also central to the series The NFL 100 Greatest, which counts down the greatest NFL memories in five categories – Plays, Characters, Games, Game Changers and Teams. The series features more than 400 interviews with celebrities, current NFL stars and Legends that will air across 20, one-hour episodes with four episodes dedicated to each topic.
AEW announced that its weekly programming slated to run on TNT will kick off on Oct. 2 with the debut offering taking place inside the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. The AEW on TNT debut show will air at 8p on Wednesday nights
NBC Sports serves up NASCAR this weekend with live “Radio Style” coverage of the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Gander RV 400 from Pocono Raceway on Sunday at 3p on NBCSN. This will mark the first of three unique, “Radio Style” broadcasts, which will see announcers positioned from vantage points around the track. The assignments for Pocono will be: Rick Allen and Steve Letarte – Main broadcast booth; RN and Sirius XM announcer Mike Bagley – Turn 1; Dale Earnhardt, Jr – Tunnel Turn; and Jeff Burton – Turn 3. NBC Sports’ coverage of the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Foxwoods Resort Casino 301 from New Hampshire Motor Speedway this past Sunday averaged a Total Audience Delivery of 2.819 million viewers on NBCSN, up 12% vs. last year.
The NBA announced the roster of 32 youth teams that will participate in the second Jr. NBA Global Championship, as well as the lineup of talent who will support the event onsite.  The competition will be held Aug. 6 at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando and air on the FOX Sports family of networks. FOX Sports will air 16 games throughout the week, totaling 24 hours of programming across FOX, FS1 and FS2, including the girls and boys Global Championship games on Aug. 11 at 3p and 4:30p on FOX, respectively.  Vince Carter, Sarah Kustok and Donny Marshall will provide commentary for FOX for the second consecutive year. Play-by-play announcer Mark Followill returns courtside along with the addition of Brian Custer, while Noah Eagle will serve as a reporter and Charissa Thompson will once again anchor a pregame show.
NBA and MLB games, among other sports, running on TNT, Turner and other WarnerMedia platforms are headed to the studio’s upcoming streaming service, HBO Max, according to AT&T chairman and CEO Randall Stephenson, per reports. The new streaming service set to launch in early 2020 and will include the premium HBO programs as well as programming from Turner, in addition to more than 10,000 hours of content at the beginning, including Warner Bros. TV-produced Friends, Game of Thrones, Pretty Little Liars, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air and library content from Warner Bros., New Line, HBO, TNT, TBS, TruTV, TCM, Cartoon Network and Adult Swim.
Carmelo Anthony and digital studio Portal A today unveiled a brand new series, “HOODIE SZN,” which will premiere today on Carmelo’s recently relaunched YouTube channel. The first season will feature Carmelo dropping in on training camps of the International Champions Cup, the premier off-season tournament for major European soccer clubs, and training alongside some of their biggest stars to understand what motivates them. In addition to the full-length episodes on YouTube, shorter versions of the YouTube episodes will air on ESPN during halftime of the International Champions Cup (ICC) matches.

More details on the broadcast radio sports betting network being launched by GOW Media and VSiN. Dubbed the BetR Network, the platform will launch on Aug. 5 with Lotus Sports KBAD-A in Las Vegas as well as Longport Media’s WBSS-A in Atlantic City. “With the explosive growth of the sports betting market serving as a backdrop, we’ve seen incredible interest in airing programming from our 24/7 line up of sports betting content,” said GOW Media VP Mike Sinnott. “In less than a month, we’ve signed contracts in the biggest betting markets in the country and have dozens more radio stations in the pipeline. We expect to have at least 50 affiliates on board by the launch and are excited to deliver this unique content to a growing number of terrestrial radio stations.”

The 2019 Women’s Professional Lacrosse League Championship, in partnership with espnW, is ready to road starting Friday at Yale’s Reese Stadium, with the top four teams in the league playing for a chance to take part in the Championship game on Sunday including Fight/Command at 4:30p and Brave/Pride at 8p, with both available on ESPN3. Winners will advance to play in the 2019 WPLL Championship on Sunday at 2p on ESPNU. “We are excited for the playoffs to begin this weekend, and we’re thrilled about the opportunity to partner with espnW throughout the entire season,” explained WPLL Senior Vice President Rachael DeCecco. “Our goal as a league is to continue to grow and engage the next generation of female athletes, aligning the WPLL with espnW’s core mission. Deloitte announced its sponsorship of six athletes who are preparing to compete in the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020. The lineup includes five Olympians and Paralympians vying for a chance to return to the Games, as well as one athlete who hopes to compete in the inaugural Olympic Games surfing competition. The Team Deloitte athletes include: Crystal Dunn (soccer); Chris Hammer (para-triathlon); Dana Mathewson (wheelchair tennis); Tatyana McFadden (wheelchair racing); Carissa Moore (surfing); and Benjamin Patch (volleyball).
The WNBA announced that Teyana Taylor will perform at halftime during AT&T WNBA All-Star 2019. The game takes place on July 27 in Las Vegas and will be carried on ABC at 3:30p. AT&T WNBA All-Star 2019 will also feature performances by Las Vegas mainstays Cirque du Soleil and Blue Man Group. Meanwhile, the league also announced that Kristin Chenoweth will perform the national anthem.
BIG3, the 3-on-3 basketball league, announced that T.I. and Yella Beezy will both perform at a brand-new major basketball and entertainment festival, “BIG3 Ballout,” in Dallas on August 17. In addition to the musical performances, “BIG3 Ballout” will feature all six weekly games on one day at American Airlines Center.
TeamWorks Media announced that its La Vida Baseball platform added both The Topps Company and ’47 Brand as partners.  Both Topps and ’47 have begun content partnerships and consumer apparel programs with LVB, which include product placement, on air contests, celebrity guest appearances and expert opinions on trends and fan engagement in and around baseball. 
Wasserman is launching Athlete Exchange, a new service for athletes “as influencers and brands seeking athlete-driven digital content.” Through Athlete Exchange, Wasserman will “evolve” athletes into a network of individual media channels and will bring the entire digital endorsement model in-house, providing creative services, talent, production and media distribution on athlete channels. The venture will utilize a combination of proprietary software and human expertise to match athletes with a brand’s desired audience.
Synchrony and Fanatics launched the FanCash Rewards Card by Fanatics, a new offering that will offer fans a payment method for licensed sports merchandise, memorabilia and collectibles and sports experiences. The long-term partnership will see a Fanatics-branded credit card, with cardholders able to receive personalized merchandise offers, exclusive access to unique sports experiences and automatic enrollment in the Fanatics FanCash loyalty program.
