“No news is good news,” said AT&T CEO John Stankey about the regulatory review process for the WarnerMedia/Discovery deal. Asked during an earnings call whether he still expects the deal to get approval by April 2022, Stankey said, “I don’t have any reason to suggest it is going to be any different than that.” As for AT&T’s turning 30% of DirecTV over to TGP to create a separate entity, the exec said it was a “pleasant surprise” that the deal will close next month, earlier than expected.
As for AT&T’s 2Q21 earnings, total revenue of $44 billion beat analysts’ estimates of $42.6 billion, and earnings hit 89 cents, handily topping a forecast of 79 cents. WarnerMedia’s revenue rose 31% versus the same quarter last year, to $8.8 milion, with the return of sports helping boost ad revenue by 49%.
“American Housewife” has been cleared for a fall 2022 broadcast syndication premiere. Disney Media Entertainment & Distribution has cleared the sitcom, canceled by ABC after five seasons, to stations representing more than 85% of the country, with CBS Television Stations serving as the launch group. In addition, the series has been sold to stations from broadcast groups including Weigel Broadcasting, Nexstar Media Group, E.W. Scripps Company, Hubbard Broadcasting, Hearst Communications, Gray Television, Bahakel Communications, Tegna Media, Lockwood Broadcast Group, Mission Broadcasting, Cox Media Group, Meredith Corporation, NPG Broadcasting and American Spirit Media.
After six months of investigations by CBS News and Stations into allegations of racist and abusive behavior, the general managers in two outlets are out. “We will begin our search for new leaders in Los Angeles and Chicago immediately,” wrote CBS News and Stations President and Co-head Wendy McMahon to staff.
Skipping a shot in the arm could be costly to NFL teams and players. HBO and HBO Max added 2.8 million accounts in 2Q21, to 47 million on June 30. That’s a year-to-year increase of 10.7 million. WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar shared news on AT&T’s earnings call that should help HBO Max’s numbers in the future: Warner Bros. will produce 10 or more movies in 2022 exclusively for the streamer. “Motion pictures matter and will continue to matter,” said Kilar.

Two-thirds of marketers and advertisers support unified federal consumer regulations such as the California Consumer Protection Act and the Colorado Consumer Protection Act, according to a survey from Kubient. Of these respondents, their primary reasoning for supporting included the belief it would be simpler for marketers to follow these federal guidelines vs. each state creating bespoke guidelines (34%); the belief that privacy regulations should be in place to protect consumers (26%), and nearly 20% believe we should model the GDPR regulation for new US federal privacy standards. While 88% of survey respondents indicated some level of concern on the increase of privacy regulation requiring a shift in strategies on reconcepting of campaigns, only 23% noting they were “extremely concerned” on the changes required.

In the same time period, Fox News counted 2.77 million viewers and 477,000 in the demo, and MSNBC drew 1.67 million viewers and 227,000 among A25-54. CNN’s February town hall with Biden delivered 3.5 million viewers.
