07/23/19: NBCUniversal will mark one year to Tokyo 2020 with a programming blitz

Good morning. It’s Tuesday July 23, 2019 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

NBCUniversal is officially on the clock, celebrating one year until the 2020 Tokyo Olympics by leveraging its portfolio of assets to connect Olympic fans with the Games, the host city and the athletes starting today. Promotion will range from sport demonstrations and athlete visits on TODAY to a company-wide promotional roadblock to interviews with NBC Olympics primetime host Mike Tirico live from Tokyo.
 
 In addition, 15 world-class Olympic athletes and hopefuls — including Shaun White, Ali Krieger and David Boudia — will celebrate the occasion in New York and Los Angeles, and appear across numerous NBCU platforms and shows. NBCUniversal’s 20+ broadcast and cable networks will also air an exciting Olympic promotional spot today including a 60-second version in primetime on NBC set to “The Greatest Show” as performed by Panic! At the Disco. Social media accounts across NBCUniversal will also harmonize to participate in an Olympic social roadblock, sharing the same Tokyo 2020 graphic on July 23. Team USA, National Governing Bodies, athletes and influencers will share social assets throughout the day as well.
 
 
PROGRAMMING

PGA TOUR LIVE is stepping up its game to offer fans more access than ever during the 2019-20 PGA TOUR Season by adding early-round featured groups coverage from seven events between September and December, including – for the first time ever – live streaming of “featured matches” all four days of competition from the upcoming Presidents Cup at The Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Australia this Dec. All told, approximately 140 hours of additional live content will be available, bringing more than 1,100 total hours to subscribers and extending live content across each month of the calendar year. “In year one of our partnerships with NBC Sports and Amazon, we’ve exceeded expectations on multiple fronts, and we’re thrilled our fans will have the opportunity to watch the exciting early-round action from these 6 fall events and Presidents Cup,” said Rick Anderson, Chief Media Officer for the PGA TOUR. “It’s clear that fans love the depth and breadth of PGA TOUR LIVE coverage, which is a byproduct of both its increasing accessibility and the expanding volume of live content we’re able to deliver.”
 
The 2019 National Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on MLB Network reeled in a 0.35 overnight rating, marking upticks of 21% and 84% respectively over the 2018 and 2017 Induction Ceremonies. The top two markets for the ceremony included New York at #1 (1.2 rating) and Seattle at #2 (1.0 rating). The telecast ranks as the second-best Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony since MLB Network launched in 2009, behind only the 2014 Induction Ceremony. In addition, video content from Induction Weekend generated 1.8 million views across MLB Network’s social media platforms.
 
A standoff between FOX Regional Sports Networks and DISH along with streaming service, Sling, is temporarily relieved. The two sides were reportedly unable to come to a contract agreement and opted to an extension that would prevent a blackout of the RSNs.
 
CBS Sports HQ is opening its doors for the new football season with fantasy football programming for Fantasy Football Today. Celebrating year 12 on CBS Sports digital platforms, the show will join CBS Sports HQ each day from 1noon-1p with CBS Sports fantasy experts Jamey Eisenberg, Dave Richard, Heath Cummings and various CBS Sports guests will covering the sport. In addition, CBS All Access subscribers can now stream the full show show as well as on-demand video of the award-winning podcast every day.
 
Sportsman Channel is touting its highest Q2 Average Audience delivery in three years during Total Day, Prime and Weekend. For Sportsman Channel, among Men 18-49, the network is up 19% during Total Day, 23% during Prime and 18% during Weekend and up among men 25-54 by 32% during Total Day, 24% during Prime and 48% during Weekend. On outdoor channel. For the first half of 2019, Sportsman Channel ranks as the fastest growing basic cable network with Men 25-54.
 
USA Hockey announced that NHL Network will televise live the final three days of games at the 2019 World Junior Summer Showcase. The week-long event will include 11 international competitions featuring the best Under-20 players from the US, Canada, Finland and Sweden competing for a slot to represent their country in the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship. Coverage of the six games begins on July 31 at 1p.

NextVR, in partnership with Liverpool FC, will bring US fans onto the pitch in virtual reality to experience the current UEFA Champions League winners play Sporting Club of Portugal at Yankees Stadium in a preseason friendly match tomorrow at 8p. A total of 8 VR cameras will be positioned along the pitch and throughout the venue to virtually transport US fans into the matches. The fully produced live VR broadcasts will include dedicated announcers for pre-game, play-by-play, halftime analysis, and match recap.
 
The Golden State Warriors and Fanatics announced a long-term, omnichannel retail partnership which will broaden the assortment and availability of merchandise for fans across online, mobile and on-site retail stores. With this announcement, Fanatics will become the exclusive operator of all Warriors Shop locations throughout the Bay Area, including the new, multi-level 10,000 sq. ft. flagship location at Thrive City and stores inside of the new Chase Center.

The Overwatch League is launching League Picks Beta, a broadcast game allowing fans to predict match outcomes in order to earn Overwatch League Tokens. Beginning July 25 with the start of Stage 4 for all matches, fans watching on OverwatchLeague.com on desktop and mobile web or on Twitch during live broadcasts will see a League Picks panel on the right side of the player on desktop, and below the player on mobile web. each match, there’ll be a series of five questions to answer, which will be match- or map-specific based on the teams playing. The League Picks Beta is comprised of a series of 26 challenges, ranging from making their first pick to getting 500 predictions correct. When players correctly make predictions and complete a challenge, they will receive 25 League Tokens. Challenges can be tracked in the Challenges Tab inside the League Picks panel. A full product launch will be announced at a later date.
 
T-Wolves Gaming, the NBA 2K League affiliate of the Minnesota Timberwolves, named Raynor Group as its Official Gaming Chair Provider.
