The faulty Windows update from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike that caused a massive IT outage on Friday may not have been a cyberattack, but bad actors were quick to jump in and take advantage of the event. Cybersecurity agency CISA reported “phishing and other malicious activity” amid the blue screen errors. About 8.5 million devices, or less than 1% of Windows machines globally, were affected by the outage, according to a Microsoft blog post, but “while the percentage was small, the broad economic and societal impacts reflect the use of CrowdStrike by enterprises that run many critical services.”

Eighty-one percent of US adults are concerned about how companies use the personal data they collect, and 76% have little or no trust that companies will not sell personal data without their consent, according to a three-part Insight series from the Video Advertising Bureau. The study also found:
· 46% percent of US adults found TV advertising trustworthy, versus 30% for websites and 19% for social media.
· 66% of respondents say they would gain trust in a company if they were transparent about how they use personal data.
· 98% say responsible and secure treatment of consumer data is extremely important in shaping the customer experience for brands.
· Top reasons to share personal information with brands when prompted are coupons or deals (33%), product price (30%) and free product resource (22%).

“With growing consumer concern about data privacy and security, and an influx of data legislation at the state and federal level, it is essential that every advertiser, brand and marketer have a data privacy and security strategy,” said Benjamin Vandegrift, VP, Measurement Solutions & Innovations, VAB.

Google has become the official search AI partner for Team USA during the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games, highlighting athlete stories and enhancing NBCU’s coverage of the events. Google will integrate sponsored content formats – including ways to search and explore the Olympic & Paralympic Games with Google Search and related AI features – within NBCUniversal’s coverage. NBCU’s content will leverage Google’s suite of consumer apps products, including Search, Maps and Gemini. NBCU has created “Explain the Games,” which will showcase Google Search’s AI Overviews and be used during daytime and primetime coverage. And “Try it with Google Gemini” allows viewers to follow Chief Superfan Commentator Leslie Jones, while audiences can see immersive views of Olympic venues in the city provided by Google Maps Platform’s Photorealistic 3D Tiles.

Comcast’s enhanced 4K from Xfinity will premiere in time for the Olympics and be available on USA Network’s 24/7 coverage. Enhanced 4K brings together 4K video delivered over Comcast’s network at its highest bitrate, Dolby Vision for life-like picture quality, Dolby Atmos immersive audio, and ultra-low latency only seconds behind all the live action. The launch follows a trial of the technology conducted during the 2024 Super Bowl. Moving forward, Comcast said enhanced 4K will be the new quality standard for live sports delivered in 4K on X1.

Overall TV ad impressions were down nearly 4% during the first six months of 2024, according to iSpot TV’s most recent Transparency Report, but the Big 4 networks saw their primetime reach grow by double-digits. According to the report, 7,100 advertisers aired 24.2 million national linear TV ads (10.3 million minutes) across 179 industries; household TV ad impressions were 4.2 trillion in the first half of the year, a 3.73% decrease as most linear dayparts saw ad reach decline; and news programming increased from 18% to 19% of all TV ad impressions year-over-year. Sports programming grew from 12% to 13% year-over-year, while the biggest gainers were the NHL (TV ad impressions up 49%), and the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament, which doubled reach vs. the 2023 event. The Big 4 broadcast networks increased primetime SOV by 14.3%, while in the Spanish language segment, Telemundo ad deliveries were up 16% in prime, and the network broke into the top 20 overall (#18).

Yahoo DSP has integrated its cookie-less identity solution – Yahoo Connect ID – with data collaboration platform LiveRamp’s Authenticated Traffic Solution for publishers. Allen Media Group (The Weather Channel), CarGurus, DISH Media, FloSports, and Philo have already adopted Yahoo ConnectID. The collaboration allows all 21,000 publisher domains that have adopted LiveRamp’s Authenticated Traffic Solution to seamlessly integrate with Yahoo ConnectID.

Toyota and HBO Max had the most impressions among advertisers in local DMAs from June 16 to July 16, according to the AdImpact Platform. Progressive led advertisers in impressions secured with 3.267 billion, followed by Toyota with 2.899 billion and HBO Max with 2.891 billion. In total, about 396 billion impressions were secured by all advertisers across 210 DMAs, a 13.3% decrease from May 16 – June 15. New York led all DMAs with impressions secured at 30.215 billion, followed by Los Angeles at 13.325 billion and Philadelphia at 10.870 billion. Nexstar Broadcasting Group delivered the most impressions to advertisers in local DMAs with 15.463 billion, followed by Gray Television at 12.657 billion and E.W. Scripps at 12.634 billion

Social media platform X saw some drastic declines in June, as advertising fell month-over-month and year-over-year, after seeing growth in CTRs and CPMs earlier in 2024, according to Tracer. CTRs declined 78% month-over-month, and CPMs decreased 17% from May to June. Tracer analyzed both year-over-year and month-over month percentage changes in key metrics across digital platforms, including X, TikTok, Instagram and LinkedIn. Tracer found that TikTok CPM rose 16% year-over-year, while Instagram saw an 89% increase in CTR’s. YouTube and Pinterest experienced increases of 77% and 385%, respectively.

Google AI Overview advertising revenue will hit $1.7 billion in 2025, jump to $6.7 billion in 2026 and reach $16.9 billion in 2027, predicts New Street Report, “The ROI on Gen AI Primer.” The report does not include search ad-spending estimates for additional generative AI participants, and has revised downward its AI ad spending forecast for ad-supported AI agents developed by Snap and Meta.

Three weeks after Toys ‘R Us introduced an ad created with Sora, OpenAI’s text-to-video tool, Kantar analyzed the brand film using LINKAI, their advanced creative development solution. The result? The creative was rated as “impactful” (in the 74th percentile of all creative in the database) because it’s enjoyable and well branded and was also found likely to aid long term brand building (Power Score 74th percentile). But its Persuasion score was just average (55th percentile), meaning it’s not likely to predispose people to purchase in the short term. Bottom line: “Ads needs to be emotionally engaging and persuasive to be effective,” Jane Ostler, EVP of Global Thought Leadership at Kantar, tells Cynopsis. “This film did quite well in both, but not so well in short term metrics (leading to sales). However, a word of warning from our testing of ads that use Gen AI: just because an ad is efficient to make, for example speeding up the production process, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s effective in the long and short term. Brands must bring their meaningful difference to life in order to grow – to predispose more people towards them – so marketers need to be clear on their objectives for the content in question.”

Google Ad Exchange was the programmatic seller most used by Made-for-Advertising sites in May, according to Pixalate’s May 2024 Web MFA Risk Analysis: Open Programmatic Sellers Report, which found it sold ads on 72% of MFA sites, up from 67% in April. Magnite was second with 33%, down from 50%, and Xandr Monetize was third with 31%, down from 45%. Last on the list was Bright Mountain Media, which sold less than 1%.

MEASUREMENT

Three-quarters of CTV buying is now programmatic, according to IAB’s 2024 Digital Video Ad Spend & Strategy Report. Within programmatic CTV, activation is roughly equal among the open exchanges/RTB (36%), PMP / preferred deals / programmatic guaranteed (34%), and ad networks (30%). Other findings include:
· Buyers are investing across all video content types, from short-form to long-form to creator and immersive. Short-form (69%) and vertical-format (68%) account for the largest share of buyers.
· “Business outcomes” is the top KPI to determine success at the digital video channel level. Including sales, store/site visits, and leads, business outcomes is the most important KPI for buyers of social video, online video, and CTV. Social exceeds online video, and CTV at 64% vs. 58% and 54%.
· Though two-thirds of buyers cite issues across measurement, small spenders are significantly more likely to cite issues with viewability, standardized targets, currency, and obtaining sell-side data. Additionally, TV/video buyers are significantly more likely to cite measurement issues with CTV and OLV than with social video.
· Alternative measurement currencies are now widely used, with 89% of advertisers transacting, testing, or having discussions with alternative currency measurement vendors. Buyers value multi-screen attribution (45%) and real-time reporting (43%), and 28% of buyers are already transacting on alternative currencies.

“The industry has bought, transacted, and measured against reach since the beginning of time,” said Cintia Gabilan, Vice President, Media Center, IAB. “But now business outcomes are the most important metrics to assess success, with reach and frequency coming in second. However, measurement is not yet where it needs to be. Two-thirds of buyers cite issues across nine key areas of measurement.”

STREAMING

Streaming technology company Brightcove has added family-friendly streaming service Sunn Stream to its roster of media customers. Sunn Stream will rely on Brightcove’s platform to distribute its content to audiences nationwide.
