IN THE NEWS
Over 600 local news stations have banded together to form advocacy group Coalition for Local News. “Regulators and lawmakers continue to rely on rules that need to be modernized in the streaming era,” says the group on its website. “These rules, and government inaction, put local news providers at an unfair disadvantage in an ecosystem that includes much larger media and tech companies.” Efforts will include working with groups that recognize the importance of local news and encouraging them get involved in modernizing regulations.
Forty-five percent of internet viewers reported watching little to no linear TV in a typical day, according to a worldwide study from Ampere Analysis – up 22% in two years. Meanwhile, the number of high linear TV viewers (who watch at least four hours of broadcast TV a day) has slipped from 19% of respondents in 1Q21 to 15% in the first quarter of 2023. But all is not lost. “At first glance, the decline in linear TV viewing looks to be a worrying trend for broadcasters as their traditional audience begins to drift away,” said Minal Modha, Research Director at Ampere Analysis. “However, as the increased engagement with broadcast-led video services shows, if the linear channels can continue to adapt and provide a strong OTT offering for audiences switching from scheduled TV channels, they have an opportunity to retain them, albeit on a different medium.”
Marketers spend $408,500 on average to conduct a search and review when an incumbent agency is not involved, according to a new study, The Cost of the Pitch, from the 4A’s, ANA and Advertiser Perceptions. When they are involved, incumbent agencies spend $406,092 on average defending an account that goes into review, an expenditure that likely contributes to 25% of incumbents declining participation in the review. When pitching new business, agencies spend an average of $204,461 per pitch. “Considering the substantial hard and soft costs that clients and agencies incur during a pitch, it would behoove most clients and agencies to identify the gaps to repair their relationships versus expending budget and time unnecessarily,” said Greg Wright, SVP, Brand & Media, ANA. “By leaning into an agency relationship management program, clients and agencies can bridge those gaps and deliver better business results.”
New advertising partners Discovery Channel reeled in for its 35th Shark Week – running Sunday, July 23-Saturday, July 29 – include Budweiser, Chili’s Grill & Bar, Cinnamon Toast Crunch™, Domino’s, MTN DEW®, Long John Silver’s and University of Phoenix. Returning brands are Gorilla Glue, PNC Bank, Sport Clips and Wayfair. Why dive into these waters? “Shark Week attracts impressive audiences year after year, and we create endemic sponsorship opportunities for clients that fit seamlessly into the programming to deliver enjoyable advertising experiences for engaged consumers,” said Jon Diament, EVP, Advertising Sales at WBD. “We work closely with our sponsors to ensure their overall marketing objectives are met through unique and impactful campaigns that provide unmatched reach and scale through our wide portfolio of brands.”

Netflix has renewed “Quarterback” for a second season. The first time out, the NFL docuseries executive produced by NFL great Peyton Manning profiled Patrick Mahomes, Kirk Cousins and Marcus Mariota.

STRIKE UPDATES
More tough talk on the strike front. “Here’s the simple truth: We’re up against a system where those in charge of multibillion-dollar media conglomerates are rewarded for exploiting workers,” wrote the SAG-AFTRA negotiating committee in a release. “The companies are committed to prioritizing shareholders and Wall Street.” The AMPTP responded, saying the guild mischaracterized negotiations. “Not only does its press release deliberately distort the offers made by AMPTP, it also fails to include the proposals offered verbally to SAG-AFTRA leadership on July 12,” said the studios.
The UK actors’ union Equity has planned a rally for Friday to support striking actors in SAG-AFTRA. Protesters will walk from Leicester Square in London and Manchester’s Media City.
How will the writers’ and directors’ strikes impact content inventory and programmatic? “All programmatic solutions require data for audience targeting, optimization and measurement underpinned by technology and premium brand safe inventory,” said Stephen Magli, CEO and Co-founder of AI Digital, “Of course, if the strike delays content distribution, there will be challenges scaling premium inventory. With that said, we will likely have a more accurate perspective on the strike’s impact, as we head into September’s new programming season.”
CBS has overhauled its fall lineup, adding unscripted and acquired programming to adapt to the production disruptions caused by the strikes. Monday comedies “The Neighborhood” and “Bob Hearts Abishola” have been replaced with new series “Loteria Loca,” based on a Latin game of chance, at 8p. Filling in for the three-hour “FBI” block on Tuesdays will be “Big Brother” at 8p, followed by unscripted “FBI True” and “FBI.” On Thursdays, “Young Sheldon,” “Ghosts” and “So Help Me Todd” will be replaced by “Big Brother,” new game show “Buddy Games” and “The Challenge USA.” New game show “Raid the Cage” joins “The Price Is Right” and “Let’s Make a Deal” on Fridays. Saturdays will feature sports followed by “48 Hours”’; on Sundays, “Yellowstone” and “Big Brother” step in for the previously announced “Matlock” reboot and “The Equalizer” episodes.
NEW & RETURNING SERIES
ABC has made some shifts in its summer schedule, moving “The Bachelorette” from Mondays at 9p to 8p starting July 24. “Claim to Fame,” now airing at 8p on Mondays, has been pushed to 10p. “The Prank Panel” moves from Sundays at 8p to Thursdays at 9p starting July 27, and “Celebrity Family Feud” and “$100,000 Pyramid” move up an hour, to 8p and 9p, respectively, starting Sunday, July 30.
All ten episodes of Hulu’s “The Other Black Girl” drop Wednesday, September 13. The series, based on the bestseller by Zakiya Dalila Harris, follows an editorial assistant thrilled another Black girl is hired at her company, only to find something sinister is going on.
Season two of Peacock’s “Killing It” kicks off Thursday, August 17 on Peacock. The comedy is “an ambitious, complex exploration of life and pursuit of the American Dream mixed in with some of the stupidest jokes on television,” says series star Craig Robinson.
New unscripted series “Kings of BBQ,” following Anthony Anderson (“black-ish”) and Cedric The Entertainer (“The Neighborhood”) as they embark on a cross country barbeque adventure to learn about cooking techniques and traditions while also working to launch their own brand, AC Barbeque, premieres Saturday, August 12 at 9p on A&E.
Six new one-hour episodes of “Beyond the Headlines,” hosted by journalist Ana Garcia, kick off Saturdays at 11a on August 5.
TECH TALK
Meta’s Threads is taking a page from its rival, Twitter, and implementing rate limits to combat bots. “Spam attacks have picked up so we’re going to have to get tighter on things like rate limits, which is going to mean more unintentionally limiting active people (false positives),” posted Instagram head Adam Mosseri on Threads. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg touted the success of the platform. “Early growth was off the charts, but more importantly 10s of millions of people now come back daily. That’s way ahead of what we expected,” Zuckerberg posted. “The focus for the rest of the year is improving the basics and retention. It’ll take time to stabilize, but once we nail that, then we’ll focus on growing the community. We’ve run this playbook many times (FB, IG, Stories, Reels, etc.) and I’m confident Threads is on a good path too.”
Ad spend across Twitter’s top ten ad categories dropped an average 71% in the first half of 2023 compared to the year-ago period, according to MediaRadar. Insurance companies accounted for the biggest skid (down 92%), followed by online games (down 85%) and digital currencies (down 78%). “This drastic decrease in ad spend from critical categories, coupled with a similar reduction by some of the top advertisers, will continue to be a challenge for Twitter,” said MediaRadar CEO Todd Krizelman. “Linda Yaccarino, Twitter’s new CEO, is likely to help bring some of the dollars back given her strong reputation. However, the pressure from Meta’s Threads – not just for users but for ad dollars – is real and growing.”
Simpli.fi announced ZTV, an addition to its suite of CTV advertising solutions. ZTV is an advanced offering that delivers targeted CTV advertising at CPMs in the low teens, which is approximately half the $23 average CPM for CTV advertising, according to Guideline. With ZTV, advertisers are able to target campaigns using Simpli.fi’s proprietary weighted ZIP code ranking system, based on US Census demographic information and Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) TV viewing data, to identify and target the most relevant ZIP codes. Campaign performance is improved by optimizing campaigns to the ZIP codes that index most highly to their desired audiences.
IRIS.TV is partnering with LG Ad Solutions to enable agencies and brands who ask for IRIS-enabled™ supply to be able to activate with LG Ad Solutions for contextual transparency and brand-safe video inventory across smart TVs and connected devices. Using the IRIS_ID as a signal, LG Ad Solutions allows advertisers to use their preferred brand suitability and contextual data partners to target their CTV inventory.
STREAMING
Thirty-five percent of SVOD customers report they are spending too much on services and intend to cut back, according to research from Aluma Insights. That’s a 40% increase from last year. “This does not mean mature SVOD providers will not add subscribers, only that such additions will be fewer, require more aggressive discounts, and be zero-sum purchases—that is, for every new service added, another must be cancelled,” said Michael Greeson, Founder and Principal Analyst at Aluma.
Peacock is raising prices for the first time, starting August 17 for existing subscribers and immediately for new ones. The monthly fee for the premium tier will rise from $4.99 to $5.99, while Premium Plus increases from $9.99 to $11.99.
The E.W. Scripps Company has launched “Court TV: Legendary Trials” and “Laff More,” FAST channels based on its brands Court TV and Laff. “People have flocked to our website to watch Court TV’s trial archive, and when we’ve posted clips on other digital platforms, including YouTube, they’ve watched in record numbers. In just the past year alone, Court TV more than doubled its hours of viewing on digital/streaming,” said Head of Court TV Ethan Nelson.
