Nominations for the 71st annual Primetime Emmy Awards were revealed live online, with multiple nods going to NBC’s This Is Us, Showtime’s Escape at Dannemora, Netflix’s When They See Us and HBO’s Veep. HBO led the race with 137 Emmy nominations (29 more than last year), an all-time high for any network. Netflix came in second with 117 nominations (an increase of five from 2018). NBC came in a distant third with 58 nominations (down 20), with Amazon Prime Video in fourth with 47 (up 25). With 32 nominations alone, Game of Thrones set another record, the most for any program in a single season. Seven of the 12 slots in supporting categories landed with Thrones actors. Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel earned 20; HBO’s Chernobyl, 19. Some surprising omissions: Big Bang Theory’s final season saw no Outstanding Comedy nomination, and none for past winner Jim Parsons. Julia Roberts was ignored for Amazon’s Homecoming. Hulu‘s Catch-22 had George Clooney as an EP and a supporting star and saw nothing. And the breakout hit of last summer, The Masked Singer, was left out of the competition series category. In addition, there was no mention of a host for the ceremony, which will air live on Fox on September 22, with Creative Arts categories set for separate ceremonies on September 14 and 15. Netflix has edited the Season 3 finale of 13 Reasons Why to remove the suicide of a character. “We’ve heard from many young people that 13 Reasons Why encouraged them to start conversations about difficult issues like depression and suicide and get help — often for the first time,” Netflix said in a statement. “As we prepare to launch Season 3 later this summer, we’ve been mindful about the ongoing debate around the show. So on the advice of medical experts … we’ve decided with creator Brian Yorkey and the producers to edit the scene in which Hannah takes her own life from Season 1.” Studies, including one released in April specifically focused on the series, often show that suicide rates spike after portrayals on television. A GoFundMe crowdfunding page has been set up for actress Valerie Harper to raise funds to help pay for her cancer treatments. Harper was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2009; in 2013 she developed a rare brain cancer. The Valerie Harper Cancer Support Fund page was set up on July 8, and reps for the actress have verified it is real. Millennials are getting two daily news shows, courtesy of Quibi and NBC News, which is the first producer to pair up with Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman’s short form digital service’s daily news strand Daily Essentials. The company will create a morning and evening news show, each six minutes long, seven days a week. Hosts and correspondents will be based in New York’s 30 Rockefeller Plaza.

New research from streaming tracker Parks Associates indicates that revenue lost to piracy and password sharing will increase 38 percent to $12.5B over the next five years. Some 20 percent of broadband households admit to using a piracy app, website or “jailbroken” device.
