Magnolia Network officially launches today, as part of discovery+ and as an app. The 150 hours of content includes 22 shows launching this week, with more to come over the summer. A sampling of offerings: “Fixer Upper: Welcome Home,” “Magnolia Table with Joanna Gaines,” Andrew Zimmern in “Family Dinner,” “Restoration Road with Clint Harp,” “Van Go,” and “Extraordinary Stories Behind Everyday Things.” Magnolia Network replaces cable net DIY in January.
New US video subscribers dipped by 12.9% year-over-year in 2Q21, according to Kantar. Kantar’s Entertainment on Demand service also notes:
· Amazon regained the top spot for new subscribers for the first time since Q3 2020.
· discovery+ jumped to #2 spot in new subscribers in its second full quarter of operation, winning one in 10 new SVOD subscribers.
· Netflix installed base fell to 2/3 of US subscribers, its lowest penetration, as viewers traded in for newer offers.
· Disney+’s Wandavision was the top-rated title for the second quarter in a row, with Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale in #2 and Mare of Easttown on HBO Max in third place.
Those were the days: Amazon’s Prime Video and IMDb TV landed rights from Sony Pictures Television for eight Norman Lear classics. “All in the Family,” “Good Times,” “Maude,” and “One Day at a Time” launch today on IMDbTV, while “227” and “Diff’rent Strokes” drop on Prime Video. “The Jeffersons” and “Sanford & Son” launch later in 2021. “Norman Lear is a national treasure and his impact on television and popular culture is immeasurable,” said Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios. “We are so honored to bring his classic television series to Prime Video and IMDb TV so new audiences and a new generation can laugh, enjoy and be inspired, like so many of us have been throughout the years.”
Jerry O’Connell (“Jerry Maguire”) has joined CBS’s “The Talk” as a co-host. “ As an accomplished actor, devoted husband and father, Jerry will bring a unique and entertaining perspective to the conversation,” said executive producers Heather Gray and Kristin Matthews. O’Connell, who has been a frequent guest host on the show, is its first permanent male host.
Facebook is spending over $1 billion to reward creators for content on Facebook and Instagram through 2022, announced CEO Mark Zuckerberg. “Investing in creators isn’t new for us, but I’m excited to expand this work over time,” Zuckerberg said on Wednesday. In addition to bonus programs that reward creators for reaching certain milestones, seed funding will be available to help produce content.
Hulu will see a 50% rise in ad revenues in the next quarter, projects MoffettNathanson Research, as TV ad budgets shift to AVOD due to lack of linear impressions. “The white-hot ad market should continue to propel Hulu growth during the 2H 2021,” wrote analyst Michael Nathanson. Full-year ad revenue at the streamer is forecast to be $2.9 billion.
MSNBC and the WGA East have agreed to hold a vote to decide whether the news net’s 315 writers and producers, including those on Peacock’s “The Choice,” want to be represented by the guild. Ballots go out July 20. Over 200 workers signed a petition to recognize the guild as their bargaining representative, but rather than voluntarily recognizing the union, MSNBC opted for an NLRB-supervised vote. “An election supervised by the government allows all affected employees the chance to express their view on unionizing through a secret ballot,” said MSNBC president Rashida Jones last month.
Meagan O’Halloran and Eugene Ramirez will anchor late news for “The National Desk,” Sinclair Broadcast Group’s newcast launching Monday, September 27. O’Halloran will return to Sinclair to anchor the late edition of “The National Desk,” and Ramirez will serve as the Live Desk Anchor, weeknights from 10p-12a.
Edward Burns dramedy “”Bridge and Tunnel” was renewed for a second season by Epix. Production starts in fall 2021 for a 2022 premiere.
Also picked up for a second season is Disney+’s “Loki.” Tom Hiddleston stars in the Marvel series.

Nike is in early talks to buy or invest in SpringHill Co., the entertainment company backed by NBA superstar LeBron James, reports Bloomberg. James and Maverick Carter formed SpringHill Co. last year.
MTV is reviving “Cribs” – again. The celebrity homes series, launched on MTV in 2000, was revived by the network in 2010 and again in 2017 as a short-form Snapchat series, as well as on CMT for “CMT Cribs,” and in syndication. “’Cribs’ didn’t simply introduce the celebreality genre, it created a blueprint for how we engage on social media,” said Nina L. Diaz, President of Content and Chief Creative Officer, MTV Entertainment Group. The new version premieres Wednesday, August 11 at 9:30p.
Meghan Markle will create and executive produce an animated series for Netflix, as part of Archewell Productions’ deal with the streamer. “Pearl” (wt) will focus on a girl who finds inspiration in a variety of influential women throughout history. Markle exec produces with David Furnish, Carolyn Soper and filmmakers Liz Garbus and Dan Cogan; Amanda Rynda will serve as showrunner and executive producer.
Cartoon Network, Matthew A. Cherry (“Hair Love”) and Chaz Bottoms are teaming to develop coming-of-age musical comedy series “Battu.” The project is based on Bottoms’ animated short film, “Battu: An Animated Musical.” “I grew up on a healthy diet of Cartoon Network shows and to be working with them on ‘Battu’ is a dream come true!” said Bottoms. “This project is my love letter to the city of Chicago, animation, and musicals.”
McIntosh Laboratory and purpose-driven creative studio CONVICTS have teamed to launch “Voice of Sound,” a new film that celebrates the history of sound and music, voiced by the Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir. “Working with Bob Weir as our voice of sound was straight out of our wildest little Deadhead dreams,” said CONVICTS director Sharkey Weinberg.
Cristela Alonzo (“Cristela”) will host CW’s reimagining of Nick’s 1993-95 competition series “Legends of the Hidden Temple,” premiering Sunday, October 10 at 8p. The new version will retain elements of the original kids’ series, but with an adult spin.

MTV’s “The Challenge: Spies, Lies and Allies” returns for a new new season Wednesday, August 11 at 8p. For the first time, the competition franchise will feature 17 international players along with US players, and will roll out globally in over 190 countries.
Kevin Hart’s talk show, “Hart to Heart,” launches Thursday, August 5 with three episodes on Peacock. New eps will drop weekly.
Showtime picked up Australian comedic psychological drama “Wakefield,” following a man working in a psych ward who begins to lose his grip. The eight-episode season launches Monday, October 18 at 9p.
“Betraying the Badge,” a docu-series exploring police corruption cases, debuts on Vice Monday, July 19 at 10p.
Billy Corben’s “Cocaine Cowboys: The Kings of Miami” premieres on Netflix Wednesday, August 4. The docuseries comes after Corben’s 2006 film, “Cocaine Cowboys,” and 2008 and 2014 sequels.
The “Billboard Latin Music Awards” have been set for Tuesday, September 23 at 8p on Telemundo and Universo, following a one-hour red carpet special. The show airs live from the Watsco Center in Florida.
Comedy special “Marlon Wayans: You Know What It Is” premieres on HBO Max Thursday, August 19. The stand-up special is part of Wayans’ overall deal with the streamer.

Verizon is partnering with VIZIO and Nielsen on new ad tech that helps advertisers understand unique TV audiences across linear and CTV, and prevent ad waste. Verizon Media’s Unified TV Report solution gives advertisers a more complete view of their linear TV investment in relation to their digital buys across Verizon Media DSP, with enhanced analytics capabilities to understand and optimize key outcomes in their cross-channel strategy, including the incremental reach achieved by their CTV and other digital media through Verizon Media as compared to their linear TV buy, overall frequency across linear and digital, as well as GRP and cost per household metrics.
At a day-long event in NYC on Wednesday focused on the power of 5G, AT&T announced a variety of new partnerships, including with AR education company Bookful; air travel wi-fi provider Boingo; Facebook; and the NBA and WNBA. Of a partnership with the movie “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” arriving in theaters and on HBO Max tomorrow, July 16, WarnerMedia Chief Revenue Officer Tony Goncalves said the film “almost predicts and envisions what the next generation of entertainment might look like.”
Xandr renewed a contract with Microsoft that includes the extension of existing technology solutions, and the introduction of new ventures. Microsoft is extending its use of Xandr’s sell-side platform, Xandr Monetize, and its Global Supply Evangelism relationship with Xandr, as Microsoft expands and diversifies its monetization strategy.
