Meredith Vieira (Today, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire) is back to playing games as host of 25 Words or Less, debuting on select Fox-owned stations on Monday, August 6. Half-hour summer series will broadcast for three weeks.
Fox sweetened its bid, to $32.5 billion, for the stake in Europe’s Sky that it does not already own. That’s enough to surpass the $30 billion offer Comcast made in April, which beat Fox’s original $23.2 billion December bid; Comcast is expected to make a competing offer. Fox currently holds a 39% stake in Sky.
Apollo Global Management is eyeing operator of TV stations Nexstar Media Group. According to reports, the buyout firm has approached Nextstar about acquiring it.
Ouch. YouTube TV crashed during the middle of the second half of yesterday’s World Cup semifinals between England and Croatia. “Hey everyone – sincere apologies for streaming issues with YouTube TV,” tweeted the service before action resumed. “The timing is horrible but we’re working to be up and running again ASAP!”.  
Mad About You co-creator and star Paul Reiser isn’t holding his breath for a revival of the 1992-1999 comedy, telling the Tampa Bay Times, “It’s kind of stuck in the business end of it….My guess is it won’t happen.” Sony Pictures Television had struck deals with Reiser, co-star Helen Hunt and showrunner Peter Tolan, but, said Reiser, “There’s so many moving parts when you’re working with a studio or broadcaster.”

The Media Rating Council released a draft supplement, developed with the ANA, IAB and 4As, to address concerns around user-generated content that includes guidelines for discrete pieces of content rather than a domain. The supplement also addresses brand safety, suggesting “a consistent set of categories on which advertisers might choose to adopt a ‘never appropriate’ position for their ad buys.” George Ivie, the executive director and CEO of the MRC, is among the measurement experts who will be on hand for the August 2 Cynopsis Measurement & Data Conference, to moderate a panel on the state of third party measurement, as well as accept the Hall of Fame Award. Disney and ESPN inked a deal with Blizzard Entertainment to televise esports league Overwatch. “We’re excited to be working with ESPN and DisneyXD to bring Overwatch esports to an even wider audience,” said Pete Vlastelica, president and CEO of Activision Blizzard Esports Leagues. “We’ve seen incredible passion and support from fans during the inaugural season of the Overwatch League.”
UBS downgraded Netflix stock from “buy” to “neutral” yesterday, saying consumer trends are “weakening.” The streamer has gained 117% so far this year to date. “At these levels, we think Netflix stock reflects little in the way of any risks to the downside from competition, free cash flow burn, and dependence on capital markets for content spending goals,” said the report.
Rivit TV, a TV platform that gives its audience the power to greenlight shows via contributions to fundraising campaigns, launched with workplace comedy Hollyweed, a project from Kevin Smith. Creators have 45 days to convince fans to help them reach their fundraising goal; if they don’t, no one is charged.
YouTube is set to introduce a creator tool next week to over 100,000 subscribers. Copyright Match will verify a video after a user uploads it as the first iteration of the video, and scan other videos to see if any are the same or very similar. Creators have the option of doing nothing, contacting the creator or asking YouTube to remove the video. “We know how frustrating it is when your content is uploaded to other channels without your permission and how time consuming it can be to manually search for these re-uploads,” said Fabio Magagna, product manager at YouTube. “We currently provide a number of ways for copyright owners to protect their work, but we’ve heard from creators that we should do more and we agree.”
AMC Premiere is now available to YouTube TV subscribers for viewers who receive AMC as part of their television service. The upgrade offers commercial-free viewing of in-season programming of series like The Walking Dead and Preacher, as well as exclusive content, curated movies and more for $5/month. “YouTube TV is proud to be the first digital live TV service to offer super fans the chance to subscribe to AMC Premiere,” said Heather Moosnick, Director, Content Partnerships, YouTube TV. “As we think about re-inventing TV-watching for a streaming world, it was a no-brainer to offer users the choice to binge AMC ads-free and get early access to some of TV’s most popular shows.”

When Disney Junior launches its animated take on Fancy Nancy tomorrow (July 13), the title character from the books by Jane O’Connor and Robin Preiss Glasser will be voiced by an actor with some experience bringing iconic characters to life. 12-year-old Mia Sinclair Jenness, whose Broadway credits include playing young Cosette in Les Mis when she was just 6 years old, has had guest stints on Orange Is the New Black and Blue Bloods and is jazzed about portraying her favorite children’s character. “Nancy is so outgoing and isn’t afraid to be herself and make mistakes. She uses her ingenuity and resourcefulness to exemplify that even if life doesn’t always go as planned, it’s important to make the most of each day,” she says. “That’s what I want little kids to know–we’re all human.” The series was recently renewed for a second season ahead of its premiere.

The top syndicated magazine shows didn’t suffer from a soccer slump the week ending July 1, with Entertainment Tonight and Inside Edition holding steady from the week before at 2.8 in Live+SD Nielsens, and Access Hollywood and TMZ holding on to 1.1 ratings. Among talkers, Dr. Phil maintained a 2.8, while second place Live with Kelly and Ryan dipped 5% to a season low 1.9 with repeats and repackaged episodes.
Sportsman Channel reeled in ratings with fishing programming, as the network delivered year-over-year ratings gains across M 25-54 in April including: Total Day (+8 percent), Weekend (+6 percent), Primetime (+20 percent), Weekday Daytime (+14 percent) and Overnight (+14 percent).
Discovery Channel finished the first half of 2018 as cable’s #1 network (excluding sports) in Prime among M25-54 and M18-49, claiming cable’s #1 unscripted series (Gold Rush) across A/M25-54 and M18-49.
HGTV is currently ranked #2 in cable with W25-54 for the year to date. For June, the net ranked #1 among W25-54 and #4 in the demo for 2Q18. Also in June, HGTV nabbed the #1 cable rank in Prime and Weekend with both upscale A25-54 and W25-54 viewers. 

Food Network concluded 2Q18 up 5 spots with double-digit YOY A25-54 ratings growth and ranking at #8 among W25-54. Among upscale audiences, Food Network ranked within in the top 10 cable networks for both A25-54 (#10) and W25-54 (#7).  
In 2Q18, TLC had its best 2Q performance in 4 years, and its best quarterly Saturday Prime performance in 10 years, driven by Trading Spaces return. 
2Q18 was ID’s best 2Q ever in Prime for P2+ and HH delivery. In Total Day, ID ranked #1 for W25-54 vs. ad-supported cable (#2 for A25-54). In Prime, ID was a top-10 network for P2+ (#10, up 1 rank vs. year-ago) and HHs (#8, up 3 ranks).
In 2Q18, OWN’s Daytime matched its highest-rated quarter ever (0.15 W25-54); the daypart jumped 25% YOY with OWN ranking #15 on ad-supported cable, up 8 spots from last year.  
Travel Channel enjoyed its second highest-rated quarter in network history among A25-54, M25-54, and W25-54, bolstered by three consecutive weeks of best ratings ever (6/11 – 7/1). June was the net’s highest-rated month in its history among A25-54, W25-54, and W18-49. 
DIY Network recorded its highest-rated Q2 ever among Households during Prime. The network ratings were driven by the debut of the Renovation Realities: Dale Jr. & Amy series, as well Texas Flip N Move and Barnwood Builders.
Bounce’s second episode of In the Cut included increases of +21% in Households, +79% in the delivery of P18-49, +59% in P25-54 and +43% in P2+ on Monday, July 9.
