NBC picked up a second season of World of Dance. The competition series was the broadcast networks’ top-rated premiere in the A18-49 demo and the most watched alternative series debut on cable or broadcast in nine years, per NBC.
Sony Pictures Television Networks greenlit police procedural Carter, starring Jerry O’Connell and Sydney Poitier. The drama will air on SPTN’s international networks, including AXN. Series focuses on Carter (O’Connell), a TV detective turned real-life one, after he’s forced to return to his hometown after a Hollywood meltdown. Poitier plays Sam, his longtime friend and a no-nonsense veteran on the force.
HBO Films is developing The Color of Cola, based on Stephanie Capparell’s book, The Real Pepsi Challenge, detailing how Pepsi broke racial barriers in 1940s America. Mitchell Kapner (Oz the Great and Powerful) is writing the adaptation.
NEW & RETURNING SERIES
America in Color premieres Sunday, July 2 at 8p on Smithsonian. “Some of the most important decades of American history have long felt more distant to us than they should, because we’d only experienced them in black and white,” Charles Poe, SVP of production, Smithsonian Channel, tells Cynopsis. “America in Color brings vivid new life into the essential stories from the 1920s to the 1960s, and puts flesh and blood into national heroes like Franklin D. Roosevelt and Amelia Earhart. Even for those who know their history, it’s a fresh perspective that makes every event so much more relevant to today.”
Docu-drama Desperate for a Miracle, hosted by musician Jewel, joins Z Living’s schedule on July 4 at noon, followed by a double encore presentation. Additional episodes will then return to their regularly scheduled time on Tuesdays 9p.
Freeform’s The Fosters makes its summer premiere on Tuesday, July 11 at 8p, while new drama The Bold Type bows immediately following at 9p.
Million Dollar Matchmaker, starring Patti Stanger, returns to WE tv on Friday, August 4 at 10p.
Boxeo Telemundo Ford returns with four straight events beginning Friday, July 7 at 11:30a, with Sammy “Hurrican” Valentin of Tampa and Giovani “Gallo de Oro” Santilla of San Diego facing off for the North American Boxing Organization Welterweight Title. The bout airs on Telemundo and is available via the Telemundo Deportes En Vivo app.
COMING UP
Charles Spencer, brother of the late Princess Diana, appears in People’s The Story of Diana, a two-night television event airing Wednesday, August 9 and Thursday, August 10 at 9p on ABC. Spencer provides personal stories about his sister set to archival and home movie footage.
Andrea Bocelli: Landmarks Live in Concert: A Great Performance Special airs Friday, June 30 at 8p on PBS (check local listings). Hosted by Chad Smith, the drummer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the series features interviews with the artists exploring their favorite locations.
INSP celebrates the launch of Gunsmoke with a marathon of episodes and movies throughout July. Kicks off with Gunsmoke: To the Last Man on Saturday, July 8 at 2p.
Destination America airs three episodes of UFOS: Uncovering the Truth on Saturday, July 8 at 8p. Series marks the 70th anniversary of Roswell Army Air Field announcing they found a U.F.O in Roswell, NM in 1947, only to retract the statement the next day.
CASTING
Paul Costanzo (Royal Pains) nabbed a series regular role opposite Kiefer Sutherland in Season 2 of ABC’s Designated Survivor.
Cory Hardrict (American Sniper, Gran Torino) joins the ensemble of Crackle’s The Oath, debuting in 2018.
KID STUFF
Amazon premieres Niko and the Sword of Light, a new animated series for kids 6-11, on Friday, July 21 on Prime Video. The fantasy adventure series is the first Amazon Original to win an Emmy for the pilot before the series launch.
Fans can now use the immersive MagiMobile app while watching Cartoon Network to collect Magiswords beyond the Mighty Magiswords universe. The event applies to series including Adventure Time, Steven Universe and more. New episodes of Mighty Magiswords bow Saturday, July 1 at 4p.
DIGITAL DOINGS
Some good news for fans of Sense8. Although the Netflix series was canceled after two seasons, the streamer plans to release a two-hour special that will serve as a series finale. It’s slated to air in 2018.
GOING GLOBAL
Entertainment One signed a free to air broadcast partner for PJ Masks in Australia, where consumer products are poised to launch this summer. The preschool superhero show expands its audience reach to ABC Kids.
Just ahead of the Season 2 premiere of AMC’s Preacher in Croatia, AMC Networks International – Central & Northern Europe signed a new distribution deal. Croatia’s subscription television provider Vipnet is adding AMC to its basic channel package.
Nordic World closed deals totaling 213 hours of lifestyle and documentary content to terrestrial broadcasters across the Nordic territories. Among them: MTV Finland took design series Antligen Hemma, reality show Unga Foraldrar, and cookery show Tina PA Besok.
Endemol Shine Italy secured crime drama Missing and crime comedy The Teacher, among several new commissions.
CBS Sports inked a four-year partnership with FINA, the governing body for 208 national aquatics federations, to become the exclusive Canadian home to all major international FINA competitions through 2020. First up: the 17th Fina World Championships in Budapest, Hungary in July.
