RATINGS

Sunday’s season six finale of HBO’s Game of Thrones drew a series-high 8.89 million total viewers, up 16 percent from the week prior and up 10 percent from the season five closer.

Coverage of the Orlando terrorist attack caused numerous preemptions of syndicated shows the week ending June 19. But Live With Kelly held onto a 2.7 Live+SD rating, unchanged from the week prior, making it the top talk show for a third consecutive week. Dr. Phil, in reruns, was down 4 percent to 2.5, while Ellen DeGeneres had a 16 percent bounce to 2.2, rebounding from a season low.

Up 4 percent week to week to 2.4, Hot Bench was in repeats, but still had the greatest improvement over last year among syndicated strips, rising 20 percent.

As the presidential campaigns continue to engage (and enrage) viewers, Fox News is having its most-watched year ever, ending the first half of 2016 as the number one basic cable channel in prime time with an average 2.2 million viewers, and behind only TNT in 2Q16. Versus 2Q15, FNC is up 18 percent in total day viewers and up 23 percent in primetime. Number two cable news net CNN is up 71 percent in primetime viewers for the quarter, to 960,000, and up 46 percent in total day, while MSNBC was up 72 percent in total primetime viewers, with 880,000 for the quarter, and up 61 percent in total day.

Fox Business Network ended the first half of 2016 as the fastest-growing cable news net. Total Day saw gains of 94 percent, while prime time ratings were up a category-leading 133 percent. In Business Day, the net grew 113 percent, averaging 128,000 total viewers.

Family-focused Up announced its youngest quarter ever with a new median age of 48 years, nine years younger than 2Q15. 2Q16 was also Up’s strongest quarter ever in P18-34 (up 78 percent versus 2Q15), P18-49 (tie, up 74 percent) and W18-34 (tie, up 57 percent). “The decrease in median age and correlating increase in viewership indicates that our choice to evolve our program offering is resonating well with the Up audience,” said Amy Winter, EVP and GM.

Hallmark Channel movie The Wedding March grabbed a 2.2 HH rating and 2.3 million total viewers, to become the top HH-rated program on Saturday among cable networks. The movie is part of Hallmark’s second annual “June Weddings” event.

Scripps Networks Interactive’s six cable channels were all up for the quarter on a total day basis. HGTV enjoyed its second highest rated Q2 and third highest rated quarter ever, ranking as 2Q16’s top cable network among upscale W25-54 in prime and June’s top cable network among W25-54 in prime. Travel Channel ratings grew 11 percent among P25-54 in primetime, marking its third straight quarter of year-over-year growth (and eight consecutive months of growth). Both Cooking Channel (up 15 percent) and DIY Network (up 13 percent) experienced their best quarter ever among P25-54 in prime, and with a 54 percent jump among P25-54 in prime, and Great American Country celebrated its best quarter since 2008. The season of Food Network’s Food Network Star to date has been seen by nearly 24 million P2+ viewers and ranks 4th in its timeslot across all ad-supported cable.
