Will Smith and director Marc Forster joined forces to acquire Telepool GmbH. The German licensing and distribution company is a major European player in theatrical and multi-platform distribution. Telepool is slated to become a development, financing and distribution partner for projects involving Smith and Forster.
 
AT&T Audience Network picked up Religion of Sports for a third season. The series, executive produced by Tom Brady, Michael Strahan and filmmaker Gotham Chopra, features stories from across the globe via tales of rivalries, cultural differences and competition
 
Yvette Lee Bowser, EP and showrunner of Dear White People, signed an overall deal with Lionsgate Television to produce and develop new projects.
 
Megan Mostyn-Brown inked a two-year overall deal with AMC. Under the pact’s terms the writer-producer will develop projects for the net, while continuing to work as supervising producer on supernatural horror drama NOS4A2.

Bellator, a leading global combat sports franchise owned by Viacom, and DAZN, a leading live sports streaming service and part of Perform Group, struck a nine-figure, multi-year distribution agreement. The deal features seven exclusive stacked fight cards per year on DAZN and another 15 that are simulcast across Paramount Network and DAZN.

NBA superstar Stephen Curry debuted the first episode of his new five-part series, 5 Minutes from Home on YouTube on Tuesday. Co-developed, directed and produced by Portal A with Unanimous Media, the show follows Curry and guests as they grab a late-night bite after a home game.
 
 
DIGITAL DATA
 
Justin Simien, creator of Netflix comedy Dear White People, is heading to the podcast universe with Don’t @ Me. Each episode will feature conversations with actors, artists and creators who are shaping our culture.
 
Facebook plans to allow ads that promote cryptocurrency and related content from pre-approved advertisers, revising a policy implemented by the social giant in the beginning of the year to “prohibit ads that promote financial products and services that are frequently associated with misleading or deceptive promotional practices, such as binary options, initial coin offerings and cryptocurrency.” In a blog post, Rob Leathen, product management director, Facebook, noted that “at the time, we also made clear ‘this policy is intentionally broad while we work to better detect deceptive and misleading advertising practices.’ He added, “In the last few months, we’ve looked at the best way to refine this policy… to allow some ads while also working to ensure they’re safe.”
 
Video on Instagram is going pro. Last week, the company launched new long-form video app, IGTV, which will also be viewable inside the main Instagram app. IGTV features longer videos that those on the main app with a heavy emphasis on videos from professional creators. The videos will be in the vertical format.
 
AT&T Audience Network’s original series Mr. Mercedes returns for a sophomore season on Wednesday, August 22 at 10p.
 
 
GOING GLOBAL
 
John Oliver and Last Week Tonight were censored in China, last week, after Oliver made harsh comments about PROC President Xi Jinping. Both Oliver and his HBO show were banned on the Weibo microblogging platform. Meanwhile, attempts to create posting using “John Oliver” turned up error messages.
 
BBC Two bought FX drama Trust. The move comes after Sky dropped the series in the UK and Germany ahead of its debut. The Donald Sutherland-fronted project explores the real-life kidnapping of John Paul Getty.
 
Globo licensed telenovelas Rock Story, Edge of Desire and The Big Catch to Albavision. Series will air in Honduras, Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, Peru and Paraguay.
 
Media I.M.’s Sunny Bunnies is set to premiere in Canada. The pre-school show was sold to DHX Television in English and French with an exclusive Licensing Agency deal signed in Latin America.
 
Armoza Formats The Four is headed to Kazakhstan. Starting in September, 12 episodes of the singing competition series will air on Khabar TV. In addition, Peru’s Latina is now airing a second live season of The Four, following the success of season one.
 
Jiangsu Broadcasting Corporation closed a deal with Viasat World at NATPE Budapest. The international media company secured rights to broadcast docudrama Scars of Nanking on Viasat History in July 2018.

RATINGS
 
Most of the top syndicated shows headed south in the session ending June 17, after preemptions by coverage of the 2018 FIFA World Cup and the U.S. Open Gold Championship. Still, Dr. Phil (2.7 Live+SD national Nielsen Rating, down 10% from the week before) grew 4% from last year and outperformed the talk shows for the 93rd week in row, despite being in reruns. The race for second place ended in a tie between Live with Kelly and Ryan (2.0, down 5%), which was moved by World Cup coverage into many post-midnight time slots and Ellen DeGeneres (2.0, up 5%). 
 
Some newcomers finding rough going were Daily Mail TV (0.9, down 10%) and Page Six TV (0.6, down 14 %).
 
Judge Judy (6.6, down 6%) was the number one show in syndication for a 17th straight week. It attracted a daily average of 9.2 million viewers and easily topped the overall chart despite being in reruns for part of the session.
 
The BET Awards were the #1 cable awards show for the fourth consecutive year, drawing 4.3 MM Total Viewers across eight Viacom networks, with 2.869 MM Total Viewers tuning in on BET alone. The show also scored 1.78 US national rating P18-49, with a 1.22 US national rating P18-49 on BET.
 
FOX Business Network continued its winning streak over CNBC, topping the network in Business Day and Market Hours viewers during the week of June 18, according to Nielsen Media Research. Following market swings due to mounting international trade tensions, FBN’s Business Day coverage saw a 25% advantage over CNBC with 193,000 Total Viewers compared to 155,000. FBN also overtook CNBC in Market Hours daypart (9:30a to 4p), delivering 199,000 compared to CNBC’s 158,000.
