Look out, Facebook and Periscope. YouTube will soon enable users of its app to broadcast live video via Android and iOS devices. (While YouTube already offered live broadcasting, this is the first time it’s been available to smartphone users.) To start, a handful of influencers will gain access to the new feature. Those include Mexican comedy group Platica Polinesia and left-leaning online news-channel The Young Turks. In a blog post, YouTube exec Kurt Wilms argued that YouTube’s live-broadcasting feature will eat up less mobile data than other live-streaming apps, since its live videos will show up in regular search results. Facebook Live and Periscope live-streams have to be searched for in-app.

 

According to a report from Reuters, Facebook and Google have quietly begun using automation to remove extremist content. YouTube and Facebook are using automated systems to block or swiftly remove videos from organizations like the Islamic State. The technology the companies are using was originally developed to identify and remove copyright-protected content. The companies haven’t confirmed Reuters’ report, and it’s easy to see why: The move brings up some thorny free speech issues. But at the end of the day, it’s hard to see anyone getting too worked up over the blocking of ISIS videos.

PROGRAMMING + CONTENT ACQUISITIONS
 

Speaking of Defy Media: One of the company’s most popular brands is launching a live variety and sketch comedy broadcast. But unlike, say, SNL, this one will be a YouTube-only affair. Smosh’s Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox will star in Smosh Live!, which will live-stream from the Los Angeles YouTube Space on August 26. 5 Gum, a youth-oriented brand from Wm. Wrigley Jr. Co., will serve as Smosh Live’s exclusive sponsor, and will run branded content before, during, and after the broadcast.
 
Can you smell what The Rock is cooking? If not, at least you’ll be able to watch it on YouTube. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s rebranded YouTube channel will launch on July 18 in partnership with Studio71. Renamed Seven Bucks Digital Studios, Johnson’s channel will feature Johnson’s own videos, as well as highlight from his production company, Seven Bucks Productions. In addition, the channel will feature an original scripted action series. Scott Brown, Studio71’s Director of Digital Content, will oversee the channel. 
 
Hulu
has renewed Casual for a third season. The comedy, from Lionsgate TV, will return next year. In addition, Hulu has reached a first-look deal with Jason Reitman, Casual’s Executive Producer. The deal covers all of Reitman’s TV projects; it’s the first time that Hulu has made such a pact with a filmmaker.
 
 

PLATFORMS + DEVICES
 

Time Inc. announced the launch of Instant, a new website featuring content from Internet celebs. Designed for mobile use, the site doesn’t actually require users to download an app. The content creators featured on the site, including Teala Dunn, Connor Franta, and Baby Ariel, will help promote the product, and participate in its live programming. In addition to its site, Instant’s content will be distributed across social platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and YouNow, as well as the websites of Time Inc. properties such as EW and PeopleKirstin Benson, the former Editor in Chief of WhoSay, will lead Instant as Editorial Director.
 
Univision announced the launch of an English language-section within UnivisionNoticias.com, its digital news platform. Called Univision News, the section will cover a wide array subject matter, including politics, business, sports, and education. Of late, Univision Communications has been making a furious reach out to English-language audiences, particularly millennials. But most of those efforts have come in the form of investments in (or ownership of) other brands, such as The Onion and Fusion. With the launch of Univision News, the company is signaling that even its flagship property is fair game for English-speakers.

According to a new estimate from eMarketer, 70 million U.S. Internet users will use ad blockers this year – a 35 percent year-over-year increase. And it doesn’t end there: The forecaster projects that the number will rise to 87 million in 2017. You can see eMarketer’s full write-up here.

Given Netflix’s dominance in the digital landscape, it’s kind of surprising that it’s taken the service so long to embrace digital celebs. That seems to be changing. Days after Netflix announced an upcoming series starring Viner Cameron Dallas, we now have a premiere date for Haters Back Off, the upcoming series centering on YouTube character Miranda Sings. (The deeply untalented character is the brainchild of actress, comedian and singer Colleen Ballinger, who is herself quite talented.) The series, called Haters Back Off, debuts October 14.
