06/23/16: BET starts streaming service; Pretty Little Liars goes online with a brand extension; Study shows more folks are comfortable streaming

is launching BET Play, a standalone online service that won’t stream the network live but will allow subscribers across the globe to watch live events such as this week’s BET Awards and shows on demand online. It will be found in 100 countries for $3.99 a month (or the local equivalent). Those in markets that can watch BET on regular pay TV won’t have the option of receiving BET Play, the lone exception being the U.K. This is Viacom’s next step in testing these waters. Last year, it tested the Nickelodeon-related app Noggin. It’ll be available to iOS and Android devices as well as on Apple AirPlay-enabled television sets without the need for a broader pay TV subscription.
Freeform’s Pretty Little Liars is heading into its seventh and possibly final season. To commemorate the event, People Shop hooked up with the show’s costume designer, Cameron Dale, to create an online shop featuring items inspired and worn by the four main characters on the show. The shop will also showcase behind-the-scenes video from the seventh season as well as products from such brand names as Dogeared, Street Level, Flash Tattoos, Ban.do, and Nissa Jewelry.


Facebook and Undertone Digital Advertising have a new relationship that allows current and future Undertone clients to soon be able to run the Canvas ad format as part of a larger high-impact campaign, extending their cross-screen advertising reach into Facebook’s platform and network. In addition, Undertone can now retarget users who have seen their clients’ messages with a related ad in social environments across Facebook and Instagram. 


Mobcrush, a free live-streaming app and community geared toward gamers, has emerged from beta and officially launched for iOS and Android. The app purports to solve the problem of finding a way to stream games and user-generated content from mobile devices to other screens.
NASA has added its app to Apple TV. The app, which includes still images and videos of space along with NASA mission info and streamed access to NASA TV, has already been downloaded on other devices 17 million times.

Digital and mobile video solutions company JW Player has announced that it has secured first quarter customer deals with content creators and media brands as Univision Communications Inc. and LittleThings. The pair join approximately 600 other new enterprise customers in Q1. Currently, more than 2 million global publishers use JW Player’s solutions.
Paladin Software has partnered with supplier payments automation provider Tipalti to enable seamless payments to video content creators across countries, currencies, and payment methods. Paladin powers more than 30 multi-channel networks and media companies.

Canvs, the language analytics company that measures emotions around content, analyzed tweets about TV programming for the 7-day period through June 20 using Twitter data from Nielsen. Trends and insights from the 5,938,817 tweets expressing a specific Emotional Reaction (ER) include:
HBO drove the most admiration across networks, with 27.7% of the 6,247 “badass” reactions prompted by Sunday’s battle-heavy episode of Game of Thrones
ABC was home of awe, with 37.8% of the 21,176 “brilliant” ERs across all networks driven by the NBA Finals.
– Outside of sports programming, Netflix was heartbreak central, with 10.7% of the 82,593  “sad” reactions across all networks prompted by Orange Is The New Black, the fourth season of which launched on June 17.
ABC also led in exhilaration, with 72.7% of the 7,606 “thrilling” ERs across all networks driven by the NBA Finals.
Netflix has bumped up its per month price by $1 or $2, depending on the plan subscribers previously had. Nomura Securities predicts that the increase will cause the service to lose 480,000 of its 27 million subscribers. The expected boost in revenue, though, will make up for any loss in subs.
Limelight Network Inc.’s semi-annual “State of Online Video” survey shows consumers are still moving away from old-school video content and toward cord-cutting. Seven out of 10 consumers now subscribe to at least one streaming service, and smartphones are the top way millennials stream online video. Other findings are below:
-Twenty-nine percent of respondents cited rising prices as the primary reason they would cut the cord, down more than 8 percent since May 2015.
-The number of respondents who would “never terminate cable or pay television subscription” has risen from 10 percent to 15 percent since 2015.
-Millennials are seven percent more likely to shift viewing to OTT content and cancel pay TV subscriptions when they can subscribe to channels directly.
-Eighty percent of Millennials subscribe to at least one OTT service and 39 percent report watching at least seven hours of online video per week. Among the entire consumer population, 69 percent subscribe to at least one OTT service – a ten percent increase since May 2015.
Tubular Labs has released its May rankings of online video publishers across platforms as well as the rankings of top media, automotive and sports media properties. The top 100 video brands and influencers together generated 41.2 billion total cross-platform views in May, with an average views of 30 days of 3.4 Million and an average engagement rating of 1.3x, meaning these creators and brands produce content that’s 1.3 times more engaging than the average. Buzzfeed’s Tasty took the top cross-platform spot with 1.9 billion views across the month. It was followed by Unilad and The LADBible with 1.4 billion and 1.3 billion views. Other rankings are below:

Sandvine has released its latest Global Internet Phenomenon study and, unsurprisingly, it has Netflix ruling the roost. Based on anonymous subscriber data collected in March 2016 from more than 300 service providers, the survey found that Netflix represented 35.2% of traffic on North America fixed networks. That’s down from the 37.1% it had in Sandvine’s report in December of last year. Others high on the list include the following: YouTube (17.53%), Amazon Video (4.26%), iTunes (2.91%), and Hulu (2.68%). On mobile, YouTube led the way with 20.87% followed by Facebook (13.97%) and Netflix (3.72%).


Samsung showed off the spherical video camera Gear 360 at the Mobile World Congress back in February. Now the camera is suddenly available for around $350, but it initially will only be sold at the VidCon convention in Anaheim. Gear 360’s general launch date is not clear just yet, but will likely be later this year. The conference is serving as a launch point for other virtual-reality products for Samsung, which has renamed its Milk VR platform as, simply, Samsung VR. Samsung has also stuck its name into another VR venture: Samsung Creators. This group will partner with video shooters and curate content for the platform. YouTuber Casey Neistat is helping the company "spotlight emerging creators from YouTube and push the creative boundaries of 360 video storytelling." A contest will be launched next month to find 10 folks who make the best VR content using Samsung gear.


The Sonos Controller app for Sonos Hi-Fi wireless systems on both iOS and Android platforms received an update. Those who use it with iOS will receive more new features than those using Android.


Digital media company Sweety High has hired three new executives to oversee sales, editorial, and audience development. Liz Ryan joins as Executive Vice President of Sales and Branded Entertainment; Anne Weintraub assumes the role of Vice President of Editorial and Brand; and Keith Dobkowski joins as Vice President of Audience. Ryan most recently served as Vice President of West Coast Brand Partnerships for PopSugar. Weintraub has been Elle Group Online Director (where she oversaw the websites for ELLE, ELLE DECOR, and ELLEgirl), as well as editorial director of Glo.com at Whalerock Industries. Dobkowski spent more than eight years growing audiences for FOX Sports Digital.
