YouTube’s music subscription service will launch later this summer, which may result in a slew of artists disappearing from the site all together. YT’s Head of Content and Business Operations Robert Kyncl told the Financial Times that 90 percent of major music labels like Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group and Sony Music Group have signed deals with the service so far. However, the 10 percent that haven’t signed include mega stars like Adele or Jack White, who’ll be left behind if their indie labels don’t get on board with YT. “We have tried and will continue to try to help YouTube understand just how important independent music is to any streaming service and why it should be valued accordingly,” trade association WIN’s Chief Executive Alison Wenham told The Guardian in response to the news. “Music fans want a service that offers the complete range of music available; this is something that companies such as Spotify and Deezer do.”

Electus Digital’s reality rap battle series Road to Total Slaughter premiered on cable network Fuse today. The show follows eight up-and-coming MC’s leading up to the Total Slaughter tournament in New York City on July 12, and new episodes of the four part series will be released every week. Fuse will also air Electus’ documentary special on the final four in the rap battle, called Bright Lights, on July 10. Electus Digital was formed from a merger with Collegehumor Media in January. After each premiere episode of the reality show, co-produced by Eminem’s Shady Films and Electus’s WatchLOUD.com, an extended version plus bonus footage will be posted on WatchLOUD.com.

The world’s largest independent creator, Felix Kjellberg, better known as YouTube’s PewDiePie, pulled in a whopping $4 million in ad sales last year. The Wall Street Journal reports the YT celeb’s 2013 sales were mostly pure profit, but it is unsure how much of it went to channel manager Maker Studios and YT (which usually nabs a 45% cut of all video-ad revenue from a channel). Kjellberg began posting videos five years ago, and now has more than 27.7 million subscribers.
The stars of Discovery’s reality series Deadliest Catch answered fan’s questions over commercial breaks in a #CatchLive social event during last night’s ep. Fans submitted questions through Facebook and Twitter starting 30 minutes before the show aired, and Discovery created a social streaming site discovery.com/CatchLive featuring the chat. Lost Remote reports the tenth season’s premiere had 38 percent more tweets compared to last season’s finale.
CNN and Tumblr teamed up for a live town hall last night with former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Tumblr users were able to send in questions for Clinton via text, video and animated GIFs through CNN’s page on the media blog site. Host Christiane Amanpour included some of the questions from the page during the live interview.
Netflix’s 4K Ultra HD offering is starting to shape up. The streaming service now includes 62 episodes of Breaking Bad and the movies Smurfs 2, Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters 2 to stream in the highest resolution on the market available. Variety reports 4K is mostly a marketing stunt since only a few thousand subscribers have TV’s even capable of supporting 4K. The second season of House of Cards is also available to stream in the resolution for those subs with an Ultra HD TV.
Multi-platform company Shout! Factory will simultaneously release animated film Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart in theaters and on VOD on Sept. 24. The whimsical film is an adaptation of the bestselling novel with the same name.

Yahoo is going native. Sponsored posts from Tumblr, the media blogging site acquired by Yahoo, are now promoted across both brands and available through the Yahoo Gemini ad network. The Tumblr Sponsored Posts will feature native engagement features like “like,” “reblog” and “follow” across Yahoo’s content, articles, image galleries and digital magazines for multiple devices. “Native experiences beat their traditional display counterparts in almost every metric,” CEO Marissa Mayer said at the Cannes Lions festival yesterday. She also cited that native ad viewers are 3.6 times more likely to perform a branded search than viewers of traditional display ads, and viewers of native ads are six times more likely to do a related search. Currently, Liongate’s Capitol Couture, Lexus and Lipton are using the promoted posts.
Mobile entertainment marketing and rewards platform Viggle is partnering with Clorox to reach soccer fans during the World Cup. Clorox is sponsoring Viggle’s real-time sports game, Vigoooal during the games to support brands including Clorox Liquid Bleach, Glad and Hidden Valley. “It brings an additional element of interactive entertainment to watching the games,” Kevin Arrix, chief revenue officer of Viggle, tells Cynopsis, “and allows Viggle fans to earn points for real rewards in the process.”
