Besieged Twitter CEO Dick Costolo will depart the company, the social media network announced yesterday. Co-founder Jack Dorsey will serve as interim CEO starting July 1. Twitter Inc. shares surged eight percent after the announcement. Since Twitter went public in 2013, the company has struggled to attract new users and develop fresh forms of advertising. “I am tremendously proud of the Twitter team and all that that team has accomplished together during my six years with the Company,” said Costolo. Twitter may be next in line to be acquired; Google is one of the possible named choices so far.
 
At $13.3 billion in Q1 2015, U.S. Internet ad revenue hit a record-breaking first quarter high, according to the IAB Internet Advertising Revenue Report figures released yesterday. This year’s revenue is a 16 percent increase over 2014’s first quarter record-setting total of $11.4 billion. "Brand marketers need to be where the consumers are – and as of today, that is unquestionably on digital," said an IAB spokesperson.

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

 
Get ready, Seinfeld fans: Hulu will create a real-world version of Jerry’s Upper West Side apartment, with a show memorabilia gallery and interactive fan experience. The installation, called “Seinfeld: The Apartment,” will be open in New York City from June 24-28 to mark the Hulu debut of the entire Seinfeld catalogue. The seven-day countdown to the premiere and the launch itself is presented by Toyota.
 
Cinedigm revealed the preliminary programming roster for the Dove Channel, the OTT digital network from The Dove Foundation, that rates and approves family friendly entertainment. Initial children’s programming includes Veggietales, Fraggle Rock, The Velveteen Rabbit, Davey & Goliath, The Saddle Club Series, 321 Penguins, Wubbulous World of Dr. Seuss and Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!. Channel launches in early fall.
 
Feeln, the SVOD service subsidiary of Hallmark, acquired 12 titles for its collection of Hallmark Hall of Fame films. They include Away + Back, Remember Sunday, In My Dreams, Christmas in Conway, One Christmas Eve, Sweet Nothing In my Ear, In From the Night, The Return of the Native, Pack of Lies, Face to Face, Foxfire and Decoration Day. Feeln has also recently closed content licensing deals with Sonar Entertainment and Content Media for additional movies and series.
 
My Country Nation (MyCN) today kicked off summer with new original programming. The slate includes the fourth season launch of the country-pop culture news show, This Week in The Nation starring YouTube’s Megan + Liz, the return of Simply Sara with Sara Evans, the premiere of Uber Country from CMA Music Festival and 46 Hours with Kelsea Ballerini. The lineup joins current shows on MyCountryNation.com such as Karaoke Kab, Superfan Nation, Young in the Nation: Florida Georgia Line, Bloodline Barons, Camping With Kids and Mabe in the USA starring internet personality and prankster Tom Mabe.
 
MTV (other), MTV’s short-form digital content studio, premiered No Seasons. The eight-episode web series combines Miami local art and music scenester Julian Yuri Rodriguez’s first-person storytelling with filmed reenactments. Jillian Mayer and Lucas Leyva are the creators; both lead The Borscht Corp, a team of Miami-based artists whose work has appeared at Sundance, SXSW, Rotterdam, Slamdance, Guggenheim Museums and MoMA.
 
 

VIRTUAL REALITY
 

Yesterday, Facebook’s virtual reality company Oculus Rift unveiled its consumer version of the VR headset. Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe described the product as “incredibly” light, wrapped in fabric and usable even for those who wear glasses. “For the first time, we will finally be inside the game,” Iribe said. The Rift will be bundled with a wireless Xbox One controller as an input device, thanks to the partnership between Oculus and Microsoft. Oculus will begin shipments of the Rift headset in Q1 of 2016; the price is not yet available.

About 7 percent of U.S. households – 8.4 million – have broadband and OTT service but not pay-TV subscription, according to a report from Parks Associates, which predicts sub revenue from OTT services will climb from $9 billion in 2014 to $19 billion in 2019. “The OTT video services marketplace continues its rapid rate of change, impacting the video ecosystem across world markets,” said Brett Sappington, director of research at Parks. “While operator attempts at TV Everywhere have made little impact, OTT video services are experiencing a boom…. How the industry responds to this change will ultimately affect the fundamental structure of the video industry for years to come.”
Despite the fact that the number of apps available is constantly growing, the number actually used has remained at about 27 for the past two years, according to a new report from Nielsen. But the time spent using apps is increasing, to 37 hours and 28 minutes/month in 3Q14, up 63 percent from 3Q12. “The reward for being one of the chosen apps is heavy engagement by the user,” notes the report.

Tremor Video announced that David Arslanian joined the ad tech firm as Vice President of Strategic Partnerships. Most recently Arslanian was Co-founder and President of AppliedQ; prior to that, he was Vice President of Integration Strategy at Pointroll.
 
DigitasLBi appointed Grammy-nominated Julian Baker as Senior Designer, DigitasLBi design group. Baker spent four years at Third Man Records, working with artists such as Tom Jones, Insane Clown Posse, Jack White and Willie Nelson.
 
Marketing agency Giant Spoon promoted Mikael Greenlief to Associate Director, Strategy from Senior Strategist. Prior to joining Giant Spoon, Greenlief was a Media Supervisor at GSD+M, working with clients including RadioShack, L.L. Bean, and Campbell’s Soup.
 
LIN Digital hired Jonathan Silverstein as Chief Operating Officer. Silverstein joins from Greatest Common Factory, an Austin-based advertising agency that he co-founded in 2011.
 
AppNexus named Eric Hoffert as Senior Vice President of Video Technology. Hoffert has 25+ years of experience at Apple, Spotify, JW Player, and AT+T Bell Labs. He has received the Apple CEO Technical Award, and holds 26 patents as a digital video consultant at Disney, P+G, Viacom, VICE Media, Sony, and Stanford.
