Tumblr’s turning to its own community for new Q+A series Answer Time. Two days prior to the show, Tumblr will invite high-profile creators to open their Tumblrs’ built-in “Ask Boxes,” so users can submit questions for their live Q+A session. Answers are re-bloggable across Tumblr and shareable on all networks. The program will kick off with a different Answer Time each day of the week beginning on today, with Fall Out Boy.
 
YouTube’s Meghan Camarena (aka Strawburry17) is making the jump to TV. After collecting 80 million views and starring in the web series Video Game High School, Meghan is the backstage correspondent on TruTV’s Fake Off. She will tag team with host Corbin Bleu (High School Musical) for a closer look at the variety performance competition. Camarena told Cynopsis she takes the best part of online video and applies it to TV. “What makes online video from a YouTuber’s perspective so great is the fact that it’s personal – I’m not a character, I’m me,” she said. “So I bring the crossover [audience] and maintain that essence.” A new episode of Fake Off will premiere on TruTV every Wednesday at 10p ET.
 
 

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS
 

Scholastic Media’s caped crusader WordGirl is now on screens in 20 new episodes on PBS KIDS and PBS KIDS digital platforms. Voice talent for WordGirl includes Dannah Phirman (MadTV) as WordGirl, Chris Parnell (Saturday Night Live) as the Narrator and Ryan Raddatz (The Ellen DeGeneres Show) as Mr. Botsford and Scoops.
 
DNS:NET
, a IPTV operator, has selected Metrological’s Application Platform to launch and manage its branded TV app store, including German HbbTV apps, as part of the DNS:NET TV platform. The platform will roll out this summer. “We worked with DNS:NET to provide a video experience that relates to what the consumer is watching, combining OTT and HbbTV apps to make each experience unique to the subscriber on any screen,” said Jeroen Ghijsen, Co-Founder and CEO of Metrological. “DNS:NET’s TV app store will be front and center in this new video experience, and be easy to maintain regardless of future platforms and devices.”

With almost 100 pitches submitted from Canada in less than three weeks, Shaftesbury/Smokebomb selected three finalists for its inaugural The AMP (Audience Metrics Partnership) Accelerator program to be presented at the 2015 Banff World Media Festival. Finalists will deliver their digital series pitches during the live conference session at the festival today at 10a MT.
 
E! News held its first Periscope interview with Jurassic World stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard on Friday. During the live stream, fans watched the two actors play games and answer questions in real time. Jurassic World hits theaters on June 12.

AD PLATFORMS
 

Vdopia launched new native video ad format InView. InView is built using a new technology that auto-plays an ad when it’s on-screen and viewed by the user; it pauses if users scroll past. If the user scrolls to where less than 50 percent of the ad is viewable, the video will stop; it will resume when the ad is at least 50 percent onscreen and in view.
 
Video media platform AerServ made streaming platform Viewster’s video libraries available to advertisers, which they report has resulted in an 80 percent ad revenue increase in two months. Said Kai Henniges, Viewster CEO, “As Viewster’s business grows, it was important for us to not only optimize our mobile offering, but also to find a monetization partner that could really scale with us.”

Cynopsis talked with Anna Robertson, Vice President, Head of Video at Yahoo before her speech at the Banff Digital Keynote Series this week. Robertson discussed the trends she saw at the NewFronts as well as Yahoo’s digital strategy. Check out a preview of the interview and read more in today’s Cynsiders.
 
How is Yahoo harnessing online audiences on multiple platforms?
We’re learning where our users are, what devices they’re on and how much time they have to watch long or short form. [We are] looking to personalize that experience for our users and then pull in content from creators to fulfill it. That’s a big focus going forward.

 

Do you see virtual reality affecting the video landscape?
It’s exciting, but for a potentially disruptive technology it’s expensive to produce and you have to have a specific device to consume that content. It’s a little bit of a gimmick now, and we’re all experimenting with it. The question is, will it fizzle in the way 3D did, or will it be more like 4K, which actually turned into a reality? It has a lot of promise.

 

What trend in the video space has been the biggest surprise to you?
The explosion of Periscope and Meerkat, and live broadcast. Democratization of live streaming and the desire to have a communal experience…has been amazing to see. People still love to rally around an event at the same time. We’re creating live content that’s unique and gives this spontaneous feel.
