On the heels of its Olympics success, Discovery Inc. is turning to sports again, teaming with the PGA for an international golf service. The $2 billion deal will run from 2019-2030 and include global TV and multi-platform live rights outside the U.S., a PGA-branded OTT streaming service and nearly 150 tournaments a year. “This will be a massive business,” said David Zaslav, president and CEO of Discovery, during a conference call on Monday. “There’s no reason we shouldn’t have 10, 20, 30, 40 million people around the world over the next couple of years who love golf.”
The new version of the Mac desktop operating system, Mojave, due in the fall, will require apps to get permission before accessing personal data or messages. “We believe your data should stay private,” said Apple SVP Craig Federighi at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference on Monday. Data companies will also find it harder to track computers through fingerprinting – Safari will show only stripped down information when users browse.
Leichtman Research Group is reporting a gain in new broadband subscribers. The largest cable and telephone providers in the U.S., representing about 95% of the market, acquired about 800,000 net additional broadband Internet subscribers in 1Q18, according to LRG, with top cable companies having 62.2 million broadband subscribers, and top telephone companies serving 34.3 million. 
Nielsen was upgraded from “hold” to “buy” by analyst Brian Wieser, who said investor sentiment toward the measurement company is “overly negative” right now. “We think investors look at trends around national TV measurement through a negative lens,” said Wieser, explaining that with the introduction of new initiatives, the thinking is that advertisers will reduce their reliance on age/gender-based metrics. Not so fast, said Wieser: “We think this is not likely to occur broadly any time soon.”

Also upgrading from “hold” to “buy” was Discovery Inc. Despite industry concerns, “at current trading levels upside potential is too significant to ignore,” said Brian Wieser. “As well, as a still-relatively smaller player in a consolidating sector, we can imagine benefits to the stock from future M&A activity whether because Discovery is itself eventually bought at a premium or because it acquires other assets and realizes further synergies beyond those generated by the Scripps transaction.”
The Talk co-host Sara Gilbert opened up about the cancellation of Roseanne, where she was a star and producer. “This show has always been about diversity, love and inclusion, and it’s sad to see it end this way,” said Gilbert. “I’m sad for the people who lost their jobs in the process. However, I do stand behind the decision ABC made.” The show was canceled hours after Roseanne Barr posted a racist tweet; a spin-off led by Gilbert is reportedly being considered.
It could have been Showtime that had a problem on its hands – the role of Tutu on feminist dramedy SMILF almost went to Roseanne Barr, shared creator and star Frankie Shaw at ABC Studios’ “For Your Consideration” event. Shaw said Barr had agreed to take the role, but an injury from a fall forced her to withdraw. Rosie O’Donnell landed the role of the mentally ill character instead.  
Black-ish executive producer Kenya Barris and former writing partner Bryan Barber reached a settlement in Barber’s breach of contract and fraud complaint. Barber filed a claim in 2016 accusing Barris of using a script they had written together over a decade ago to develop the show that landed on ABC in 2014. “This entire case is settled,” said documents filed in LA Superior Court.
NBC and the Alliance of Women Directors are teaming to form the NBC/AWD Directors’ “Craft Enrichment Series,” a set of master classes for emerging female episodic directors. Among the participants will be AWD members and finalists of NBC talent pipeline program Female Forward.

Netflix ordered a scripted anthology series from Dolly Parton based on her songs, from the singer’s Dixie Pixie Productions and Magnolia Hill Entertainment in association with Warner Bros. Television. (If that rings a bell, NBC ran two TV movies, Coat of Many Colors and Jolene, based on Parton songs.) “We hope our show will inspire and entertain families and folks of all generations,” said Parton.
OUTtv is developing a new drama series based on the transgender Detective Sanchez novels with No Equal Entertainment. Series is created by James Motluk and J.B. Sugar, who will serve as executive producers.
ABC grabbed culinary competition Family Food Fight, based on the Australian format, from Endemol Shine Group. Ayesha Curry (Ayesha’s Homemade) will host.  
As Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation forces companies worldwide to conform to stricter privacy standards, firms are struggling to determine how they can safely implement GDPR, protect user data from hackers, and be transparent in online advertising and communications to avoid a public backlash and/or regulatory penalty. Allie Bohm, Policy Counsel at Public Knowledge and a speaker at the August 2 Cynopsis Measurement & Data Conference, says brands need to think about their data policies in a different way.
“Brands should think about their data collection and retention policies practices from the bottom up, starting by asking what user data they collect,” advises Bohm. “Do they really need that user data? And, if so, for what purposes? How long do they need to retain the data to achieve those purposes?  What would be the costs of losing user data – both in terms of financial cost and reputational cost, as well as any other costs? In light of the answers to those questions, brands should think about what they need to do to protect user data.
“At a minimum, brands should adhere to the latest, state of the art data security practices,” adds Bohm. “But, in many instances, the best security policy is what’s known as ‘data minimization’ – not collecting or storing extraneous data in the first place. If brands do not have the data, they cannot lose the data and data thieves and other malicious actors seeking the data will have less of a reason to target the brands.” For more insights from Bohm, you’ll find her full interview here.
Millennial news net Newsy is expanding its slate of original programming with weekday morning show The Day Ahead, produced live from Newsy’s Chicago newsroom. But don’t look for talking heads. “We know younger audiences are looking for alternatives to what they see on cable news today,” said VP of news and programming Christina Hartman. “They’re looking for substantive information from people who are close to the story as well as close to their audiences. The Day Ahead is real: just-the-facts headlines and thoughtful conversations with real people impacted by the news and policy.”
Travel Channel’s Ghost Adventures returns Saturday, June 16 at 9p. Season kicks off with a look at a haunted hotel in Mokelumne Hill, CA, with a violent history.
OWN’s Greenleaf is back for season three with a two-night premiere on Tuesday, August 28 and Wednesday, August 29 at 10p. Guest stars this go-round of the megachurch drama will include Beau Bridges (Homeland), Iyanla Vanzant (Iylana: Fix My Life) and Patti LaBelle (American Horror Story).

Former Fox News host and female empowerment advocate Gretchen Carlson, who recently inked a deal with A+E Networks to create and host a series of documentary specials, is expanding her relationship with the company with Lifetime’s “Justice for Women with Gretchen Carlson” Monday night programming block. Starting June 18, Carlson will host the two-hour block with wraps between shows, as well as narrate Live PD Presents: Women on Patrol.
Mr. Connolly Has ALS, focused on an educator’s final year as a school principal, debuts on World Channel’s Local, USA on Monday, June 11 at 9p (check local listings and have a Kleenex handy).
HBO’s The Studio, a pop-up “celebrating the deepening understanding of all things LGBTQ+,” will offer inclusive and interactive programming from July 2 through August 19 in Provincetown, MA. Events will include discussions with independent gay media outlets, drag queen-hosted trivia happy hours, a rotating gallery of artwork, a DIY costume and makeup bar, screenings, and a Big Gay Ice Cream social.
TV5Monde USA will be a crime hub this summer, with a lineup of series and films like Les crimes silencieux, with debuts June 8 at 8:30p.
Jewel will guest on reality series Undercover Boss: Celebrity Edition on Friday, June 8. The singer-songwriter dresses as a sassy brunette as she scouts for musicians for her holiday tour.
National advertising revenue increased 4% year-over-year in April, with cable up 6% and broadcast flat, according toe Standard Media Index. In cable, news saw the biggest jump (up 21%), followed by sports (16%, excluding the NCAA basketball tournament). Primetime TV revenue had a 5% lift YOY, as advertisers paid more in the scatter market.
The Association of National Advertisers presented its first #SeeHer programming award to NBC’s This Is Us. The award, to be given out annually, honors primetime programming that pushes boundaries on changing stereotypes and recognizes the importance of women and girls in media.
CBS has begun to sell ads in the upfront market, reports Variety. Sources tell Variety the net is looking for high single-digit to double-digit percentage CPM increases.
In the news at Apple’s aforementioned WWDC 2018 in San Jose yesterday: Siri will get more helpful, able to make suggestions based on things users do habitually (like that Starbucks order), and a feature called Shortcuts works with third-party apps to assist with things like locating lost car keys with Tile….Features like Instant Tuning and Do Not Disturb are aimed at curbing phone addiction, and App Limits lets users set time limits for certain apps….Memoji is a customizable character made to look like users – with tongue detection….Apple’s video chat platform can now support groups of up to 32 people, who can use camera effects to liven the discussion by decorating their face with stickers and such.
App makers may have their gripes, but at the Apple event CEO Tim Cook noted that his company is where the money is, with developers having raked in $100 billion and counting. With 500 million weekly visitors to the App Store weekly, Cook said, “The app store is clearly the best place for you to be rewarded for your hard work and creativity.”
IBM is collaborating with Fox Sports to bring AI to the FIFA World Cup. IBM Watson Media, IBM iX, and FOX Sports are teaming to provide fans with a Watson-powered viewer experience. It’s the first event where FOX Sports will be implementing AI into their production and distribution systems. What will it mean for fans? “The Highlight Machine is bringing World Cup fans closer to the game with a unique, interactive experience that lets viewers create and share their own customized highlight reels,” David Mowry, head of product and development at IBM Watson Media, tells Cynopsis. “With an extensive library of footage from 300 past World Cup games and near-real time updates from every 2018 match, fans will be able to easily relive their favorite match upsets, most notorious red cards, epic goals and more in a matter of seconds.”

Twitter is undergoing a reorg that restructures global content partnerships into regions, and has Todd Swindler, hired as global head of live business a year ago, departing. Laura Froelich, head of sports partnerships, will become head of U.S. partnerships, and David Grossman, former global head of entertainment, will head U.S. entertainment. Former head of global news Peter Greenberger is leaving the company.

Following a report in the NYTimes that Facebook formed data-sharing partnerships with at least 60 device makers over the last 10 years, including Apple, Microsoft and Samsung, that allowed the companies to access to the data of users’ friends, Facebook defended its use of “device integrated APIs.” Wrote Ime Archibong, VP, product partnerships, “Given that these APIs enabled other companies to recreate the Facebook experience, we controlled them tightly from the get-go.” Archibong also said Facebook had partners sign agreements preventing them from exploiting user data.
IFC dropped two new digital series onto Comedy Crib. Wedding Season follows a marriage-averse couple, while xPat centers on a Canadian-born wanderlust expert and lifestyle blogger.
Digital out-of-home organization DPAA announced that Digital Experiential Media Network, the advertising division of Innovative Foto, has joined the association. Said Barry Frey, DPAA president & CEO, of the designer and distributor of photo kiosks, “Innovative Foto is a leader in their field…and represent an untapped landscape for marketers.”
Fandor is featuring a series in honor of Pride Month. “Faces of Pride: 30 LGBTQ+ Films in 30 Days” includes biopics and documentaries of influential figures, as well as groundbreaking LGBTQ+ foreign, independent and cult features.
Adrian Holmes (Arrow) and Jackie Lai (The Flash) have been added to the cast of Netflix’s upcoming vampire drama, V-Wars…. Dean Winters (John Wick), Devery Jacobs (Cardinal) and Kahyun Kim (Shameless) have been cast in the sophomore season of Starz drama American Gods, returning in 2019. Kim replaces Gillian Anderson as Media.

Twenty Six 03 Entertainment is reuniting Love Island stars Chris and Kem for a new ITV2 reality show. In You vs. Chris and Kem (wt), Chris and Kem are taken out of their comfort zones by ITV2 in a series of ludicrous challenges. 
Brazilian broadcaster Globosat commissioned the finished series of two dramas, Eclipse and Refuge, from Armoza Formats, totaling 84 episodes. The shows originally aired on Canada’s TVA.

Cyma Zarghami is stepping down as President of Nickelodeon Group after more than thirty years with the company. Sarah Levy, Chief Operations Officer of Viacom Media Networks, will lead the brand while Viacom conducts a search for a successor. “Over the course of her career, Cyma has played an integral role in growing Nickelodeon into the dominant force in kids’ entertainment,” said Bob Bakish, President and CEO of Viacom. “Looking to the future, we are excited to build on this strong foundation as we continue to evolve the business and connect with young audiences in new and innovative ways.” Debra Lee, Chairman and CEO of Viacom sib BET, left her position May 28 after 30 years at the company.

Combate Americas, the Mixed Martial Arts sports and multimedia entertainment company targeting Hispanics, appointed former NBCUniversal executive, Jacqueline Hernandez, as President. Most recently, Hernandez was President and Founder of consulting firm The M2Z Group.
Actor Robert Mandan died April 29 after a long illness. He was 86. Mandan, who appeared on stage and in films as well as numerous TV series, was best known for playing Chester Tate on Soap.
