06/03/14: Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer goes down; NBCSN ices a new ratings record; ESPN opens the playbook for the NBA Finals on ABC

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, June 3, 2014, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is stepping down from the company, severing long ties with long-time partner Oscar De La Hoya. Schaefer co-founded the company with the famed boxer in 2002 but resigned yesterday amid disagreements. "After more than 10 years with Golden Boy, it is time to move on to the next chapter of my career," Schaefer said in a statement. "This decision has required a great deal of personal reflection, but ultimately I concluded that I have no choice but to leave. I have succeeded in banking and I have succeeded in boxing, and I look forward to the next opportunity." Under his direction, the company promoted the two largest pay-per-view shows in boxing history.

ON THE AIR

It’s LA vs. NY in the Stanley Cup Finals. Game 7 of the Kings’ win over the Blackhawks handed NBCSN with a new overnight ratings record for the channel, delivering the biggest audience of any NHL game in the network’s history-including Stanley Cup Final games-with a 3.17. Top markets included Chicago at a 22.7, followed by Buffalo, LA, Minneapolis-St. Paul and Boston.

Meanwhile, NBC Sports has now shifted Game 2 of the upcoming Kings/Rangers series to the broadcast channel where it will run at 7:30p on Saturday after the Triple Crown attempt at the Belmont Stakes. Coverage of the series begins on Wednesday at 8p on NBC, with Kenny Albert handling play-by-play, Eddie Olczyk as analyst and Pierre McGuire as the Inside-the-Glass analyst. Mike ‘Doc’ Emrick, who will miss Game 1 due to a death in his family, will return for the remainder of the series beginning with Game 2 on Saturday. Games three and four will be carried by NBCSN while any of the potential final three games will run on the broadcast network.

As for the NBA Finals on ABC, the action will tip off on Thursday at 9p for the Heat/Spurs series. Mike Breen has the call, beside analysts Jeff Van Gundy and Mark Jackson, reporter Doris Burke and officiating expert Steve Javie. Production highlights are set to include an updated broadcast open celebrating the greatest players and moments from the NBA Finals; I-MOVIX cameras presenting slow motion replays; 36 high-definition video cameras; and the use of eight Super Slo Mo cameras. For the second straight year ESPN Deportes offers Spanish-language coverage of the NBA Finals, with commentary from Alvaro Martin and analysis from Coach Carlos Morales. 

With its NBA series now over, TNT reports that its presentation of the 2014 NBA Western Conference Finals averaged 6.8 million total viewers and a 4.2 household score for the six games, according to Nielsen. That marks a rise of 39% and 35% when compared with last year’s Western Conference Finals between the Spurs and Memphis Grizzlies. In the male demos, Men 18-34 and Men 18-49 were both up 33% while Men 25-54 drew a 30% climb over last year.

ESPN announced an Illinois/Villanova matchup for the 2014 Jimmy V Men’s Classic on Dec. 9. The teams will play the first game of a doubleheader at 7p from Madison Square Garden, followed by Indiana/Louisville at 9p.
 
RFD-TV launches PBR Heroes & Legends tomorrow night, a weekly series of 30-minute specials, spotlighting top bull riders at the organization. The show will air at 8:30p on Wednesdays through August. The series debuts with a 60-minute special, featuring back-to-back 30-minute profiles chronicling the careers of Justin McBride and Mossy Oak Mudslinger.

EPIX announced that the premiere of the channel’s new 30-minute special series, Personal with Bill Rhoden, will run on Wednesday, June 11 at 8p and offer interviews with NFL Hall-of-Famer Calvin Hill and his son, recently retired NBA superstar Grant Hill. The show will touch on current topics in American sports, "from the Donald Sterling situation to race relations and the changing views and acceptance of the LGBT community to the on-going issues professional athletes and men of color face in society today."

Spike TV will feature MMA stars Randy Couture and Frank Shamrock in Gym Rescue, a new series that will debut Aug. 10 at 9p. The show will see the athletes help struggling gym owners try to turn their businesses into successful operations. Gym Rescue is produced by Kinetic Content with Chris Coelen, Couture and Samuel Spira as Executive Producers.

California Chrome has a new sponsor ahead of his attempt at the Triple Crown. ESPN reports that shoe brand Skechers will be displayed around the horse, including the apparel of the horse’s handlers, the horse’s blanket and inside the barn leading up to the Belmont Stakes on Saturday. The agreement will also see team members wear Skechers branding in the winner’s circle if the horse wins the race as well as allow the company to utilize California Chrome in its marketing materials for a month after the race.

BODYARMOR SuperDrink has added Seahawk’s player Richard Sherman to its roster, where he joins the likes of Andrew Luck, Rob Gronkowski, Mike Trout, Buster Posey, Kevin Love, and James Harden as stakeholders and endorsers of the drink, not to mention Kobe Bryant, is the #3 investor in the brand. Sherman will appear in an in-store advertising campaign in retail locations in Seattle and Portland, as well as a social and digital program launching later this summer.
 
The NBA will launch a limited-edition NBA-branded shoe, NBA Anniversary 2014 on June 6 to commemorate the leagues anniversary.  Only 1,946 pairs will be made available to commemorate the league’s first year in 1946. The launch will coincide with the start of the 2014 NBA Finals with a suggested retail of $119. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver will autograph the first pair of shoes with the serial number 0001 which will be auctioned live on http://auctions.nba.com on June 6 with proceeds benefitting NBA Cares community partners.

SOCIAL MEDIA

NielsenSocial reports that this year’s most social TV event was none other than the Super Bowl on FOX. The event saw 15.3 million people offering 25.3 program-related Tweets, which were seen a total of 1.8 billion times. The top hashtag of the event was #esurancesave30, which was mentioned 1.8 million times.

For the week of May 26- June 1, NielsenSocial reports that the top three Nielsen Twitter TV Ratings were dedicated to the Pacers/Heat series on ESPN. The May 30 game ranked at the top and had a unique audience of 7.547 million with 1.282 million Tweets.

DIGITAL & TECHNOLOGY

ESPN officially unveiled the newly redesigned ESPNFC.com ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, designed with a "mobile-first approach." The new ESPNFC.com also features everscrolling feeds, allowing fans to scroll through an array of suggested stories, videos and more, curated by ESPNFC.com. At launch, ESPNFC.com will default to the World Cup navigation, with the option for fans to toggle and switch to standard navigation menus for access to league coverage. In addition, teaming with Internet Explorer, ESPN has also launched the ESPN FC World Cup Essentials hub, a destination for fans to explore the history of the game and learn more about their favorite players, teams and long-standing rivalries. Steve Busfield, currently sports editor for The Guardian US, will be joining ESPN as Managing Editor, ESPNFC and ESPN.co.uk later this summer.
