VIRTUAL + AUGMENTED REALITY
Major League Baseball has partnered with Intel on a new virtual reality initiative. Under the 3-year-deal, Intel will live-stream one free out-of-market MLB game each week through its True VR app. The app is available on the Samsung Gear VR headset. The broadcasts will include on-demand replays and post-game highlights. MLB and Intel will start streaming games on June 6, with new broadcasts taking place each Tuesday of the MLB season.
PLATFORMS, APPS + DEVICES
Plex has unveiled its first live TV offering. Called, appropriately enough, Plex Live TV, the new product lets users stream live broadcast programming to Plex apps for TV-connected and mobile devices. (Users will also need a digital TV tuner and antenna.) Plex also expanded support for its DVR feature, which can now record over-the-air broadcast content from TV networks such as CBS, NBC and ABC. The new offerings are still in beta, and viewing live TV is limited to iOS devices, the Nvidia Shield, and Android TV users. The company says it will expand live TV support to Android mobile devices and Apple TV by the end of this month.
Looks like Facebook isn’t the only company taking its cues from Snapchat these days. Skype is launching an updated version of its app, complete with a new feature that’s highly reminiscent of Snapchat Stories. Called Highlights, the new feature lets users share snapped photos and videos in group chats or with individuals. The new app update also makes it easier to pull up the camera; users can access it by simply swiping right from the main screen. (A leftward swipe gets users to the Highlights feature.) One major difference between Highlights and Snapchat’s Stories: Highlights remain available for a week, as opposed to a day. And Highlights aren’t broadcast to a Skype users’ entire network. Instead, they’re only seen by those who directly follow a user’s Highlights posts.
IAC -owned video sharing platform Vimeo has formed a new partnership with Giphy, the online database that lets users search for and share Gif files. Vimeo posters will now be able to combine Gifs with their videos, allowing users to easily alternate between short Gifs and the original vids. The partnership is made possible by Giphy’s new embed player – launched yesterday – which allows users to bring Gifs to third-party sites. The new player includes the original video for any Gif that was generated from Vimeo; users can click on a Vimeo icon within the player to watch the full clip.
VC FUNDING + INVESTORS
Global ad agency WPP has made a strategic investment in 88rising, a U.S. digital content producer geared toward Asian millennials. Deal terms weren’t disclosed. 88rising, headed up by Jaseon Ma, was initially founded in 2015. In addition to original content production, the company also acts as talent manager for young Asian artists.
RESEARCH
Mary Meeker , the well-known securities analyst from Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers , dove into her annual internet trends report at Recode’s Code Conference. Among other findings, Meeker’s report found that 85% of new online ad dollars spent now go to only two companies: Google and Facebook. Meeker also found that global smartphone growth is slowing; growth was 10% in 2015, but only 3% last year. And the report found that global internet ad spend eclipsed TV ad spend for the first time in 2016 (both were around $180 billion). You can find the full report here , but be warned, it’s massive.

James Finn is headed to FoxNext. The veteran marketing exec, who’s been with Twentieth Century Fox for the past 17 years, will serve as the division’s EVP and Head of Marketing. FoxNext, a next-gen entertainment division focused on gaming, virtual and augmented reality, and location-based entertainment, was founded this past January.
