Facebook has teamed with music distribution companies DistroKid and TuneCore for the Facebook Independent Artist Program, aimed at helping artists share – and get paid for – their music across Facebook and Instagram. “Facebook is proud to make it easier for independent artists and creators to reach new audiences on our platform and build community through music,” said Chris Papaleo, music business development manager at Facebook.

An unnamed intern blamed for accidentally sending out an empty test email to a portion of people on the HBO Max mailing list is feeling the love from sympathetic supporters – including former intern Monica Lewinsky. She tweeted, “dear intern: it gets better. ps don’t wear a beret for awhile, k?”.

Snapchat has launched Creative Kit for Spotlight, enabling third-party apps to publish directly to TikTok-like Spotlight. Meanwhile, Instagram’s own TikTok competitor, Reels, is rolling out ads globally that are vertical in format, and which people will be able to like and comment on.

The new Amazon Appstore Small Business Accelerator Program will reduce Amazon’s commissions for app developer revenues for qualifying small businesses, from 30% to 20%. The move follows similar commission cuts by Apple and Google.

TiVo inked a new “Master Services Agreement” with National Cable Television Cooperative to preserve MobiTV’s deal with the organization. The pact gives NCTC members the opportunity to continue receiving the MobiTV IPTV service and covers TiVo’s implementation and management of the IPTV service that it recently acquired from MobiTV.

Amazon Studios released an Inclusion Policy that extends its commitment to diversity, inclusion and equity for its content and productions, as well as a playbook with guidelines for its collaborators in the creative community.

TBRLab, the Caribbean accelerator program launched by technology platform TechBeach Retreat, announced the launch of their four-week immersive Corporate Innovation Program. The goal of the program is to “help teams develop a culture of innovation, implement digital transformation strategies as a tool for profitable growth, collaborate with startups, and develop innovative offerings capitalizing on the workforce of tomorrow. “The Caribbean region is incredibly rich in skilled developers and potential tech visionaries. Now that working remotely is the norm, tech startups on the mainland can tap this wealth of resources by connecting through our accelerator program,” said Kirk-Anthony Hamilton, Co-Founder of TechBeach Retreat.

STREAMING

Streaming accounted for 26% of time spent on TV during May, according to Nielsen’s new monthly measurement, The Gauge. Broadcast had an audience share of 25%, cable 39%, and “other” 9%. “The past year has categorically shifted the television viewing landscape,” said Brian Fuhrer, SVP, Product Strategy. “Even as people begin to dive back into their pre-pandemic activities, based on the changes many made to enable streaming coupled with the variety of newly introduced services, we expect people to keep sampling and exploring their options. Maybe just as importantly, as production ramps back up, new content will enter the space, driving additional traction.”

Spotify has launched live-audio app Greenroom, giving creators a new way to connect with their audience and borrowing a page from audio-chat app Clubhouse. Spotify also has plans to start a Spotify Creator Fund designed to pay live creators for their work, later this summer. “Spotify Greenroom,” the new name for Locker Room – which was acquired in March – was announced this week. “Since bringing the Locker Room app into the fold, we’ve been working to expand its capabilities, with the goal of creating live audio experience that will delight creators and listeners everywhere,” said Spotify.

In more Spotify news, the company announced the acquisition of start-up Podz, developer of an auto-generated audio newsfeed for podcasts. “We believe that Podz’s technology will complement and accelerate Spotify’s focused efforts to drive discovery, deliver listeners the right content at the right time, and accelerate growth of the category worldwide,” said Spotify in a blog post.

Fox News Media is teaming with Apple Podcast Subscriptions to launch a subscription-based channel, Fox News Podcasts+. For $2.99/month, the channel offers exclusive content in addition to ad-free versions of Fox News podcasts, and Fox News shows.

Roku reported a record number of accounts watched Roku Originals series (much of which were from the library of shuttered Quibi), launched on May 20. The streamer said more than one in three users of The Roku Channel streamed a Roku Original series.

Cinedigm has finalized the acquisition of FoundationTV, a video streaming technology, artificial intelligence, machine-learning, and data analytics platform provider. Based in India, the Company co-developed the Matchpoint technology platform that currently powers Cinedigm’s portfolio of streaming channels and digital video distribution business. Cinedigm has integrated FoundationTV’s underlying technology portfolio with the Matchpoint digital distribution platform along with their respective software engineering team into a new Indian-based division, Cinedigm India. The new division will serve as the Company’s engineering, research and development hub focused on next-generation video streaming technology and emerging technologies such as cryptocurrencies and NFT.

YouTube TV has started alerting customers about the launch of an optional 4K content add-on and offering them a free Chromecast or TiVo device. The streamer sent emails to subscribers, noting that they wanted to ensure their “loyal YouTube TV members have a great watch experience (including the ability to watch 4K content on our optional new add-on service coming soon!)”.

The Media Trust has launched Video Ad Categorization, an AI-powered solution for identifying and isolating video ads featuring sensitive or objectionable content. Based on more than 15 categories of contentious subject matter, Video Ad Categorization enables AdTech platforms to comply with video provider creative policies and protect viewers from objectionable ad content. “US households are increasingly using connected TVs to enjoy their favorite programs and discover new ones—often on ad-supported video-on-demand channels that monetize through programmatic marketplaces,” said Chris Olson, CEO of The Media Trust. “Advertisers, demand and supply platforms, and video platforms all share a responsibility to maintain an appropriate digital environment that puts consumer safety first.”

Comscore has struck a partnership with Viant Technology Inc. The deal enables Viant’s advertisers to leverage Comscore’s cookie-free targeting solutions, including brand protection, contextual relevance, keyword targeting and Comscore’s latest innovation, Predictive Audiences.

Ad-Lib.io announced the latest release of its creative management platform, providing enterprise marketers with an easier way to deliver hyper-relevant digital creative at scale. The latest release streamlines the process for getting ads from the “big idea” to activation by uniting creative production and media activation workflows across channels within a single platform. Marketers can create reusable Creative Concepts, while providing the flexibility to align each creative with the target audience, channel and format.

StackAdapt released a forecasting tool that helps media buyers plan campaigns more efficiently and anticipate campaign performance prior to launch. “Forecasting in StackAdapt is the answer to a programmatic predicament we all have – how can I predict campaign performance,” said Cash Meyerhoffer, Associate Director – Digital Media at ThomasARTS. ”The feature is very straightforward, easy to navigate, and helps to clearly identify what parameters might restrict campaign performance and scale before launch.”
