NBC will air an interview with Amber Heard this week; viewers can stream a part of the special edition of Dateline Thursday, June 16 on Peacock, ahead of it airing Friday at 8p. It’s the actress’ first since the lurid defamation trial that ended with her ex-husband, Johnny Depp, winning over $10 million in damages. During the sit-down with “Today” host Savannah Guthrie, which took place June 9, Heard shares her feelings about an experience that had her under attack in many quarters. “Even somebody who is sure I’m deserving of all this hate and vitriol, even if you think that I’m lying, you still couldn’t look me in the eye and tell me that you think on social media there’s been a fair representation,” says Heard in an excerpt of the interview tweeted by “Today.”

GroupM is partnering with companies including Disney, Fox/Tubi, LG Ads Solutions, NBCUniversal, Paramount, VIZIO and Warner Bros. Discovery to ensure ads are only counted when delivered to screens that are on, with people in front of them. This comes after a joint study between GroupM and iSpot indicated that on average, 8-10% of streaming impressions play when the TV is shut off. “The explosion of streaming is rich with opportunity to deliver smarter ad experiences across a wide variety of possible channels,” said Kirk McDonald, Chief Executive Officer, GroupM North America. “As responsible investment stewards of our clients’ media spend, this verification illuminates both the issue and the opportunity for our industry. Regardless of the medium, if an ad is running, we want and should be able to attribute, measure, and report that an ad was served and seen.”

Netflix officially renewed hit series “Squid Game” for a second season. The Korean drama holds the record as Netflix’s most-watched series, with 1.65 billion views within its first 28 days of release.

Also coming back is HBO Max romantic comedy “Starstruck,” for season three. “’Starstruck’ is exactly the kind of rom-com that we love at HBO Max, and we are so happy to see Jessie and Tom’s story continue,” said Sarah Aubrey, Head of Original Content at the streamer.

CBS News correspondent Richard Schlesinger is retiring after 38 years at the network. “Richard Schlesinger is the epitome of a CBS News journalist,” said Neeraj Khemlani, President and Co-Head of CBS News and Stations. “He’s a great writer. He’s a terrific interviewer. He knows how to tell a story that keeps you on the edge of your seat. For nearly four decades, Richard has had an impact on our audiences. He’s also left an indelible impression on the journalists who followed him. Though he’s retiring, we know his influence will be felt here for years to come.” Schlesinger’s last day at CBS will be June 17.

Who’s the fairest of them all? The top-ranked major basic networks among non-subscribers to cable TV/cord cutters were Discovery Channel (37% rated it of high interest), Comedy Central (37%), Food Network (34%), FX (33%), and ID, History, and National Geographic, each with 32%, according to the 2022 Beta Research Cable Network Interest Study. Among non-subscribers to cable/cord cutters who were heavy streaming network viewers, the top ranked basic networks on high interest were FX (43%), Discovery Channel and Comedy Central (42%), Syfy (41%), Food Network and History (both with 40%).

Among total adults age 18+, the top ranked digital basic networks included FX Movie Channel (52%), Cooking Channel (48%), Discovery Life and Hallmark Movies & Mysteries (47%) and MTV Classic (44%). Digital basic/mid-sized networks with special appeal and the highest indices on interest in dropping cable TV included: INSP, MotorTrend, Bloomberg Television, Fox Business Network and fyi.

Brady, the organization fighting gun violence, has asked entertainment execs to sign a pledge to effect change by modeling responsible gun ownership and showing consequences for reckless gun use, among other measures. The group is racking up signatures among Hollywood heavyweights including Shonda Rhimes, Michelle King, Judd Apatow and Jimmy Kimmel. “Cultural attitudes toward smoking, drunk driving, seatbelts and marriage equality have all evolved due in large part to movies’ and TV’s influence,” says the pledge. “It’s time to take on gun safety.”

Civic themes appear in nearly one-third of TV episodes, but authentic portrayals of civic leadership are lacking, according to a study released by the Center for Media & Social Impact at American University, in partnership with MTV Entertainment Studios and Michelle Obama’s When We All Vote. Civic themes – appearance of civic conversations, ideas and actions – appear in 29% of top-rated entertainment TV program episodes, across both scripted and unscripted genres. Scripted drama and sitcoms portray civic themes more than all other entertainment TV genres (47% of civic themes occur in scripted drama, versus 1-18% in all other genres, with scripted comedy in the number-two spot, portraying 18% of the civic themes in this listing of TV programs). “We have known for many decades that what we see on entertainment TV matters a great deal in shaping the world we want to live in,” said Caty Borum, the study’s principal investigator and Executive Director of the Center for Media & Social Impact. “Entertainment media has incredible cultural power to show us participating positively in making our democracy work, through our own actions and our demands of public officials who work for us, and this study is one piece of helping us understand what we see and learn from pop culture.”

Hallmark Channel greenlit “Ride,” a rodeo-themed multigenerational drama focused on a Colorado family struggling to keep their ranch. Ananey Studios, a Paramount company, and production company Nevision are jointly developing “Goode Stuff,” an animated comedy series aimed at kids aged 6-12. NEW & RETURNING SERIES

“The Handmaid’s Tale” returns to Hulu for season five with two episodes on Wednesday, September 14.

A young inventor from a fantastical prehistorical world is the focus of “Eureka!”, a new STEAM series premiering on Disney Junior and Disney+ on Wednesday, June 22.

Inserting “The Record with Greta Van Susteren” into the Newsmax lineup starting tonight at 6p has shuffled the lineup. “The Chris Salcedo Show” moves from 5p to 4p; “Rob Schmitt Tonight” shifts from 10p to 7p; “Eric Bolling The Balance” jumps to the 8p primetime slot from 4p; and “Greg Kelly Reports” slides from 7p to 10p.

HBO’s “Rap Sh!t”, from Issa Rae (“Insecure”), debuts Thursday, July 21 with two episodes. The comedy follows two estranged high school friends from Miami, who reunite to form a rap group.

BAFTA’s film awards will be held in London on Sunday, February 19, 2023, during the Berlin Film Festival.

“CMT’s Red, White & Blue Weekend” will include a live broadcast of “Let Freedom Sing! Music City July 4th,” Nashville’s Fourth of July fireworks display and concert headlined by Old Dominion, plus CMT Hot 20 Countdown’s annual “Holiday Salute to the Troops” weekend special.

Grammy nominee Mickey Guyton will host the 42nd edition of “A Capitol Fourth” celebration on PBS. The event, broadcast live from Washington D.C., will feature stars from pop, country, R&B, classical and Broadway, in addition to the requisite fireworks display.

FuboTV has launched TMB (Trusted Media Brands) FAST channels FailArmy, The Pet Collective, WeatherSpy and People Are Awesome. “As the industry leans into ad-supported content, we believe a more robust portfolio of FAST channels as part of FuboTV’s content offering will benefit customers, advertisers and investors,” said David Gandler, Co-Founder and CEO, FuboTV. “Diversifying our revenue streams, particularly with our ad sales business, is one of many strategies we are deploying to achieve our profitability targets.”

Boxing heavyweight champ Anthony Joshua has expanded his relationship with DAZN in a deal that will see his future fights live on the service. In addition, as special advisor, Joshua will join DAZN’s strategic advisory board as the business develops its global boxing offerings.

Fuse+ will make its international debut in India as part of OTTplay’s new subscription pack. The announcement follows international content licensing deals with rlaxx TV, MTN, LingoPie and Telkom SA, and the launch of Fuse Beat on Samsung TV Plus UK in 2021.

Beyond Rights struck a series of new deals in Germany. Among them: Sky Deutschland has acquired a package of close to 100 hours, led by “Elizabeth”; “The Prince and the Paedophile”; “Inside British Airways”; “World’s Greatest Palaces”; “Inside Secret Societies”; “Nazi Murder Mysteries”; “WW2: Witness to War” and “Pooch Perfect USA.”

A suite of Blue Ant Media’s FAST channels have launched on LG Channels in the US and Canada. In the US the true crime channel Total Crime and home renovation channel Homeful join wildlife and nature channel Love Nature on LG Channels, while in Canada, LG Channels now includes Homeful, the paranormal-themed channel, HauntTV, and CrimeTime.

RATINGS

CBS’ telecast of the Tony Awards ceremony drew 3.86 million viewers, according to Nielsen. That’s up 39% from last year’s ceremony, but still the second least-watched telecast on record.

More than 4.4 million total viewers tuned in to the season premiere of HGTV’s “Battle on the Beach” on Sunday, June 5. The episode garnered a .59 Live+3 rating among P25-54 and a .75 rating among W25-54, increases of 59 percent and 67 percent, respectively, over the prior six weeks.

The freshman run of HGTV’s “Lil Jon Wants To Do What?” has attracted more than 12.2 million total viewers since its May 2 premiere. The season scored a .45 Live+3 rating among P25-54 and a .61 among W25-54, marking double-digit increases of 25 percent for P25-54 and 24 percent for W25-54 versus year-ago benchmarks.
