IN THE NEWS
The Television Critics Association has canceled its summer press tour amid the ongoing WGA strike, and uncertainty about DGA and SAG-AFTRA negotiations with the AMPTP. “The summer 2023 tour is canceled. Even if the guilds and studios reach agreements in the coming weeks, we’ve come to the point at which it’s no longer feasible to organize the tour, never mind plan for our own travel,” read a statement to TCA members. Winners of the TCAA Awards will be announced without an in-person celebration.
The IATSE has approved $2 million in financial aid for its union members affected by the WGA strike. “For those who are struggling, you are not alone: the 170,000 kin of our Alliance are with you, and help is available,” said IATSE International President Matthew Loeb. “We trust these proven industry charities to deliver this much-needed support directly to IATSE members who need it most, and we will continue to explore all avenues to provide necessary assistance to our members as they weather the storm during the writers’ strike.”
Meanwhile, The Black List, a platform for writers to showcase their work, has suspended studio access to its services. The organization has also cut the material fees for writers during the walkout.
NBC has canceled “Young Rock” after three seasons, and “Grand Crew” after two. The net picked up mockumentary series “St. Denis Medical,” focused on an underfunded Oregon hospital, starring Wendi McClendon-Covey (“The Goldbergs”).
Following the debut of “Tucker on Twitter,” videos former Fox News host Tucker Carlson first posted last week, Twitter CEO Elon Musk invited MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow and former CNN anchor Don Lemon to produce shows for the platform. “You will reserve our full support,” he told the left-leaning journalists. “The digital town square is for all.” The first episode of Carlson’s show – which Fox News claims violates his contract – has drawn over 100 million views, and the second over 50 million.
Paramount Global is open to future consolidation opportunities, said CFO Naveen Chopra, speaking at the Gabelli Funds media gathering last week. “It’s probably unwise to bet against consolidation in the media industry or really any industry for that matter,” he said. “We remain very open-minded to those possibilities, because they can be very effective ways of maximizing shareholder value.”
GSTV, the video network available at gas stations, is teaming with TikTok for an integration that will bring content from the entertainment platform to GSTV’s audience of over 116 million unique monthly viewers. “At GSTV, we’re always looking to entertain our viewers in new ways. TikTok has proven immensely popular, boasting a highly engaged U.S. audience,” said Violeta Ivezaj, SVP, Business Operations at GSTV. “This is an exciting opportunity to offer our advertising partners, creating memorable moments with organic and creative content integrations optimized for consumers on the move.”
The CW has picked up the first three seasons of crowdfunded historical drama “The Chosen.” The series, following the life of Jesus Christ, starts its CW run on Sunday, July 16 at 8p. “’The Chosen’ is based on the biggest IP of all time and is truly a one-of-a-kind series that tells this historically significant story in a captivating, dramatic and premium way,” said The CW President of Entertainment Brad Schwartz. “This show has already connected deeply with viewers around the world, and The CW will expand its audience even further.”
It looks like “Walker Independence,” the “Walker” spinoff canceled by The CW after one season, won’t be reappearing for a second season elsewhere, reports TV Line. EP Jared Padalecki had gone on record saying producers were “aggressively” looking for a new home for the western, but no taker was found.
