With direct-to-consumer companies accelerating TV media spending in 2018, VAB’s new marketer’s guide, :”Direct Outcomes: Analyzing the ‘Big Bets’ DTC Brands Are Making on TV,” examines 125 brands across 52 unique DTC categories. The companies collectively spent $3.8 billion on TV in 2018, a 60% increase in spending from 2017, adding $1.4 billion to the TV advertising marketplace over the past year. “DTC brand leaders will tell you their data is essential to their company and it drives all decisions,” said Sean Cunningham, president and CEO, VAB. “The data collected and measured against customer activations and business outcomes from TV advertising campaigns has proven these DTC marketers not only made smart investments, but it also prompted them to reinvest in TV to continue driving growth.”
Growth in digital ad spend, based on data from major agencies, has taken a dip this upfront season, according to Standard Media Index. “Of concern to the U.S. ad marketplace is sharp hesitation – maybe hiccup – in digital spending,” said SMI in a new report. “Major marketers have limited their incremental investments in search to a tiny +1.6% growth level through the first four months of 2019.” That’s down from double-digit growth through the same point in 2018.
