GAC Media has acquired Great American Country network from Discovery. GAC Media was recently formed by Hicks Equity Partners, and will be run by President and CEO Bill Abbott, former CEO of Crown Media Family Networks. The new company also acquired equestrian-focused Ride TV. “Even as the entertainment ecosystem continues to rapidly evolve – both in terms of distribution platforms and underlying content – consumer interest in family friendly programming that enriches lives and offers safe entertainment options remains as strong as ever,” said Abbott. “GAC and Ride TV represent cornerstone assets in this respect, and we look forward to growing both channels even as we pursue the larger goal of establishing new, well-resourced and engaging family-friendly programming.”
ViacomCBS is offering a less expensive tier of streaming service Paramount+ that includes ads for $4.99/month. Over 1000 movies will be added June 10, starting with the exclusive premiere of Mark Wahlberg sci-fi thriller “Infinite”; by the end of the summer, 2500 titles will have been added, including “Paw Patrol: The Movie.” Half the price of Paramount+ Premium, Paramount+ Essential will include live sports and original content, but not local CBS stations.
The Tokyo Summer Olympics will include 7000 hours of coverage on two broadcast networks, six cable nets and multiple digital platforms, announced NBCUniversal on Monday. “After a devastating year, the world comes together again, finally, in Tokyo this summer,” said Molly Solomon, Executive Producer and President, NBC Olympics Production. “We are going to deliver the most comprehensive — and accessible — coverage for any sports event in history. The depth and breadth of our broadcasts will be unprecedented, showcasing once-in-a-generation athletes and storylines that will capture the incredible uniqueness of these Games and our times.” The NBC broadcast network will include 17 consecutive nights of coverage, starting July 23.
In a settlement with French authorities, Google was fined $268 million and agreed to make changes to its global advertising business. Authorities said Google’s ad management platform, Google Ad Manager, favored the company’s own online ad marketplace, Google AdX. Google committed to improving the way Ad Manager services worked with rival ad servers and ad space sales platforms to ensure it didn’t abuse its dominant position.
Fantasy series “Shadow and Bone” landed a season two renewal from Netflix. The show was watched by more than 55 million member households in its first 28 days, reports the streamer, and made the Top 10 list in 93 countries.
Up, up and away: With leisure travel on the rise, NBCUniversal and ReachTV have struck a new sales and content agreement that will activate across more than 90 airports. As part of the expanded partnership, NBCU will add more programming hours across more genres of content and will enhance ReachTV’s advertising sales footprint in an exclusive monetization partnership. A multi-year first-look deal for films, series and nonscripted content emphasizes projects that support diverse female writers, actors and filmmakers. “There is no better home for us than a forward leaning content creation company that seeks to defy conventional wisdom and directly market to the millions across the globe who no longer view art and entertainment with the kind of boundaries and limitations of the past,” said Lopez.
Amazon Studios locked in actress/producer Lili Reinhart and her Small Victory Productions for a first-look TV and film deal. “Following the success of the emotional and poignant ‘Chemical Hearts,’ we’re so thrilled to continue our working partnership with Lili, as we welcome her back into the Amazon family,” said Jennifer Salke, Head of Studios. “Lili’s on-screen charisma, as well as her passion for dynamic storytelling, brings a refreshing perspective to the young adult genre.”
Producers Ben Pagel and Michael Lappin inked deals with Jupiter Entertainment. The deal with Pagel, Founder and Creative Director of Astral Studio, has already resulted in the commission of a yet to be announced 20-episode series and a limited docuseries. Lappin (“Love Nina”) is tasked with bridging the worlds of traditional television and the short form content market.
Future Today is co-producing two new original series based on Roblox and Minecraft with gaming content producer/on-demand app Tankee. Both 13-episode comedies will launch exclusively on Future Today’s HappyKids OTT platform in 3Q21. Minecraft Boss Battles and Roblox Recess Extreme are geared to kids ages six to 12.
Meg DeLoatch (“Family Reunion”) is stepping in as showrunner for CBS comedy “The Neighborhood.” She replaces series creator Jim Reynolds, who left at the end of last season amid complaints about his leadership.
Testing, testing: Kameo, the COVID-19 testing service, is launching a digital platform to help streamline the task of tracking and managing COVID-19 testing and compliance on-site on productions. The new platform and expanded services will allow production management and health and safety teams to schedule and manage testing events across large groups with complex testing requirements, and will also host a symptom screener, with health questions customizable to the needs of each production.
Comedy “Better Late,” from David E. Talbert (“Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey”), Lyn Sisson-Talbert, LeBron James and Maverick Carter’s The Springhill Company and ABC Signature, has been put in development at ABC. The series, about a first-time dad whose deadbeat father shows up hoping for a second chance, is inspired by Talbert’s real life.
