IN THE NEWS

HBO Max’s ad-supported version rolled out yesterday, with the claim that the $9.99/month tier will have the “lowest commercial load in the streaming industry.” The plan calls for a maximum of four minutes of ads per hour, and zero ads during HBO programming; 35 advertisers have signed on so far. HBO Max’s ad-free version costs $14.99/month.

How will Discovery’s mega-deal with WarnerMedia impact NBCUniversal? “We are very pleased with our assets, our talent, our culture, the strategy,” said Comcast Chairman and CEO Brian Roberts, responding to a question at his company’s annual shareholders meeting. “We think we have a unique company well-positioned to compete vigorously for talent, for customers and for growth in the years ahead.” As for staff returning to the office, Roberts was optimistic, saying he hoped most employees would be back in the office “most days” in September.

Tweetstorm could take on new meaning now that Twitter has teamed with climate journalist Eric Holthaus to launch a local weather news service. Membership for “Tomorrow,” offering content created by 18 local meteorologists across 16 North American cities, is $10/month.

Former president Donald Trump’s blog, launched in early May, has been removed from his personal web site. “From the Desk of Donald Trump” was “just an auxiliary to the broader efforts we have and are working on,” Trump aide Jason Miller told CNBC on Wednesday. Trump was banned from Twitter, Facebook and Instagram after the January 6 attack on the Capitol.

“The Ellen DeGeneres Show” reached 100 million Instagram followers, prompting its host to announce a new giveaway. “Ellen” fans who click on the contest link in the @theellenshow Instagram bio and explain why they’d like to be in the studio audience will be entered to win two VIP tickets to a taping of the farewell season next year.

The industry is shifting away from mass-market messaging and toward data-driven impressions. Are you keeping up? Learn everything you need to know about the importance of single-market media buying in this 12-page New York Interconnect report.
