05/31/17: NBC’s Cup overfloweth; Whistle’s Nitro boost; FOX gives Champions League the VR treatment

Good morning. It’s Wednesday May 31, 2017 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

Game 1 of the 2017 Stanley Cup Final on Sunday night gave NBC a year-over-year spike, as the Penguins victory drew an average Total Audience Delivery of 5.038 million viewers, up 22% over last year’s Game 1. That marks the third-most watched Game 1 since NBC Sports began televising the Stanley Cup Final in 2006. The full contest posted a 2.85 Nielsen household rating, and averaged 4.967 million TV-only viewers, both up 25% and 22%, respectively, vs. Game 1 a year ago. Digitally, Game 1 delivered the second-most live minutes ever for a Stanley Cup Final game with 13.7 million, up 58% vs. Game 1 last year (8.667 million).
 
In other viewership news on the channel, the Formula One Monaco Grand Prix, which ran on NBC, averaged a Total Audience Delivery of 1.530 million viewers, up 14% over last year’s race and marking the most-watched live F1 race on record.
 

ON THE AIR

CBS Sports unveiled its 2017 college football schedule broadcast windows and select games for the upcoming season, anchored by the “SEC Game of the Week” in addition to the annual Army/Navy classic (Dec. 9) and Hyundai Sun Bowl (Dec. 29). The new slate features three consecutive Saturday SEC doubleheaders, which in addition to the two Thanksgiving weekend games, puts eight late-season games on CBS leading into the SEC Championship, beginning with TCU/Arkansas to kick off the season on Sept. 9; as well as Florida taking on Tennessee on Sept. 16; Georgia/Florida on Oct. 28 and Missouri/Arkansas on Nov. 24. Brad Nessler debuts this season as lead college football play-by-play announcer, teaming with Gary Danielson and reporter Allie LaForce.
 
ESPN locked in College GameDay’s Desmond Howard to a multiyear deal to remain with the network. In addition to calling select mid-week games during the season, Howard will continue to play a large part on ESPN’s College Football Playoff programming.
 
This weekend will see NBC Sports Group serve up the annual Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby Championship on NBC and NBCSN. Coverage begins on Saturday at 3p on NBC with live preliminary-round matches, followed by live coverage on NBCSN at 5p. Sunday sees coverage continue at 1p on NBCSN, before NBC offers the Championship Final at 3p. Leigh Diffey will serve as the play-by-play commentator for all telecasts, joining by Brian Hightower with Marty Snider reporting.
 
Speaking of rugby, United World Sports announced the official launch of The North American Super 7’s Rugby League. The league will serve as a “modified, professional, city-based league” for the sport and feature competition for men and women professionals. In addition, the company named David Niu as President of the North American Super 7s Rugby League. Super 7’s Rugby will launch with a barnstorming six city ‘Pro Tour’ across the United States next July.
 
The NHL fleshed out its lineup of key events for the 2017-18 season, with the schedule slated to include the 2017 NHL China Games presented by O.R.G. Packaging on Sept. 21 and 23. The event will see the King/Canucks square off in the first-ever preseason games played in China as part of the series.  Meanwhile, 2017 Kraft Hockeyville will run on Sept. 24 (United States) and Sept. 25 (Canada). The 2017 SAP NHL Global Series will take place on Nov. 10-11 with the Avalanche/Senators facing off in a pair of regular-season games in Stockholm,.
 
The International Olympic Committee is reportedly ready to lock in Paris as host of the Summer Olympics in 2024 while Los Angeles would be the home for the 2028 event. The Wall Street Journal writes that the movement toward an agreement follows months of deliberations and negotiations and is contingent on Los Angeles and the USOC securing enough incentives that waiting an additional four years for the Games remains financially viable and beneficial to the city.

Univision Deportes reports that its broadcast of the second-leg of the Liga MX finals between Chivas/Tigres on Sunday night on Univision delivered 2.8 million viewers with 1.6 million Adults 18-49. That marks the second most-viewed Liga MX Clausura final ever on any network.

Meanwhile, t he NHL Centennial Fan Arena tour will continue its road trip this summer, with the interactive fan experience lining up dates that include Buffalo from June 2-3 during the NHL Scouting Combine, Chicago from June 23-24 during the NHL Draft,  and Toronto from July 14-16, among other stops.
 
ASICS America Corporation is offering an assist to to PHIT America by offering Americans the chance to turn their next fitness run into a charitable act. DIGITAL & STREAMING

Whistle Sports is adding Nitro Circus to its roster, partnering to create and distribute long- and short-form content throughout Whistle Sports’ network of 350 million fans and followers across social platforms. Through the agreement, Nitro Circus will also facilitate opportunities for Whistle Sports creators to attend and produce content at Nitro events around the world. “Nitro Circus produces electric live performances across the globe, and working together with our creators, we will elevate their brand on the channels where millennials are following sports every day,” said Whistle Sports President Jeff Urban. “Through our partnership, Nitro Circus will be able to leverage Whistle Sports’ ability to sell and integrate brands into existing and new content, and we will expose their brand to new audiences by leveraging our social media influencers, like Guinness World Records, F2 Freestylers, and Paul Rabil.”
 
FOX Sports announced plans to showcase the UEFA Champions League final in VR, courtesy of LiveLike, which will feature multiple camera angles of the title match, as well as statistics and pre-game VOD features through the FOX SPORTS VR app. The game takes place on June 3 at 2p.
 
Samsung Electronics unveiled a VR Live Pass on Gear VR, featuring live entertainment partnerships with the UFC, X Games and Live Nation for audiences. The deals will see Samsung stream select live events so fans can enjoy immersive virtual reality broadcasts of their favorite action sports and music events through the Gear VR platform. Among the events to be featured will be UFC 212: Aldo vs. Holloway on June 3, X Games Minneapolis starting July 13 and more.
 
Bill Simmons has a newer new base of operations, this time taking The Ringer to Vox Media in a new partnership. Ringer had previously been publishing on the Medium platform.
 
ESPN landed live streaming rights to The Basketball Tournament’s new Jamboree play-in tournament, which will give 16 additional teams a shot at a winner-take-all $2 million prize. The Jamboree games will run June 17-18 at Philadelphia University, with all games streaming live on ESPN3 and the ESPN app.
 
 
ESPORTS

Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval signed Senate Bill 240 into law, opening the doors to legal esports wagering in the state by allowing p arimutuel betting to include competitive gaming and other events like award shows.
 
Twitter is partnering with Riot Games Oceania to live stream the inaugural League of Legends: League of Origin tournament globally on the platform and connected devices. The tournament takes place this weekend from the ESL Studios in Sydney. “Twitter is one of the most engaging platforms for fans of the OPL and OCS esports leagues, so it made sense to team up for League of Origin,” said Daniel Ringland, Head of Esports at Riot Games Oceania. “The livestream on Twitter will be a shortcut for fans in Oceania and around the world, as they can both watch and engage on the platform at the same time.” To celebrate the inaugural League of Legends: League of Origin, Twitter is also launching  special tournament emojis.

Reebok International named Chris Froio as General Manager, Reebok America. Froio will lead the brand’s efforts to grow its business in the US. Market, reporting to Reebok President Matt O’Toole. Froio was most recently Reebok Brand Director in Western Europe.
 
The Players’ Tribune is tapping Joe Carney as Senior Vice President of Sales and Brand Partnerships, where he will oversee sales and brand partnerships, and work closely with advertising agencies and brands to create multiplatform content and custom advertising experiences. Carney previously served as Vice President of Sales for Major League Baseball.
