Hulu is bringing back Deadbeat for a third season. The 13-episode order of the Lionsgate Television original comedy will once again star Tyler Labine (Tucker + Dale vs. Evil) as a medium who helps New York ghosts resolve unfinished business. Lionsgate is also developing Casual with Jason Reitman and a long form project with Freddie Wong (Video Game High School) for the streaming service. The second season of Deadbeat was released on April 20; the season three premiere date is not yet set.
Android users can now participate in the Periscope craze. Twitter’s latest app acquisition, which allows users to live stream content directly with from and to their phone, went live on Android devices yesterday. Twitter bought the app for a reported $100 million earlier this year.
AOL UK sealed a global content partnership with Guardian News + Media, and joined AOL On as a content and publishing partner. Additionally, the deal will distribute Guardian content across the AOL On Network and give the media company access to AOL’s complete video library, including AOL Originals. Most recently, AOL announced an agreement with Group M Entertainment (GME) to create a new global AOL Originals series.
What’s the most important trend companies should be monitoring? “Social media,” says Will Funk, Senior Vice President of sponsorship integration and business development for Turner Sports Ad Sales – but it’s not that simple. “It can be a great marketing tool but also creates ubiquity of content. Amazon will premiere the first season of UK comedy Catastrophe featuring comedian Rob Delaney on June 19. The six half-hour episodes follow Delaney’s character as he struggles to start a relationship with a woman who has recently become pregnant with his child. Amazon Prime members in the U.S. will get the first look at the new series; it will debut later in 2015 for UK users.
Discovery Family Channel (DFC) is diving into YouTube with its own channel. The Kids Kuts Classic Film Series channel invites families and children to upload videos parodying classic movie scenes. Vignettes from Gone with the Wind, Casablanca, Jaws, The Godfather and Citizen Kane are currently being accepted. Finalists get a chance to be featured on Discovery Family’s YouTube site next year.
Spencer Brown and David Landau, the former co-CEOs of Dial Global/ Westwood One, have partnered with Venture Capitalist Michael Rolnick to form DGital Media. The company will help media brands create, distribute, and monetize spoken word audio products. The Re/code Radio network will be DGital Media’s first project, via a partnership with Revere Digital. Also joining the company as Chief Content Officer is Chris Corcoran, former EVP for Content and Dial Global/Westwood One; previous Vice President of Sales at Dial Global/Westwood One Grace Carrick was tapped as Executive Vice President for Sales and Strategy.
With 11.5 million app downloads, Care Bears (under American Greetings Properties) will release six new mobile apps this year. Beginning in June, AGP will partner with Lion Forge for a series of interactive comic books; in July, AGP joins forces with Bare Tree Media for Care Bears emoticons for messenger apps. August will see the first animated “appisode,” produced with Plumzi. Finally, PlayDate Digital will launch CB digital storybooks in the fall. CB has more than five million views on its YouTube channel.
