NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

Comcast and Turner Broadcast System signed a deal to bring Turner’s current seasons and select original series from networks like TBS, TNT, Adult Swim and more to Xfinity TV consumers. Variety reports the shows will be available the day after they premiere and stick around for the rest of a current season. Turner will provide ads for Xfinity On Demand programming. Comcast has similar deals with more than 40 other networks including ABC, BBC and USA Network.

AT+T may be on the verge of buying DirecTV for $50 million. USA Today reports an official announcement may be weeks away, but the pact would be a way to expand its video offerings, which is similar to how the Comcast and Time Warner Cable deal could deliver. AT+T currently provides pay-TV service through its U-Verse brand.

Second-screen app Viggle integrated Telescope‘s platform to develop and manage TV-based play-along experiences for the Viggle LIVE network partners and advertisers. Telescope will also use Viggler’s real-time engagement data for its visualization applications used in tandem with live shows. "Combining our industry-leading play-along mechanics and social engagement tools with Viggle’s loyalty rewards program creates a truly differentiated experience in the increasingly competitive second-screen space," Telescope CEO Jason George said.

MOBILE GAMING + APPS

Xbox owners may no longer need an Xbox Live Gold account to use streaming services on the console like Netflix or Hulu. TechCrunch reports Xbox users have complained in the past about needing the Gold subscription in addition to a streaming service sub in order to view that type of content on the console. Microsoft also dropped the price of its Xbox One by $100 for a $399 price tag yesterday, which will not include the Kinect motion sensor.

Twitter‘s latest mute feature may have brands squirming. Recode reports that users now have the opportunity to filter out tweets or other users without having to unfollow or block them. However, this may backfire on Twitter as it tries to woo marketers with the hook of reaching the masses if users can mute a brand’s tweets without them actually realizing it.

AD PLATFORMS

The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) announced 29 publishers, networks, exchanges, SSPs, DSPs and ATDs have been certified under the revised IAB Quality Assurance Guidelines program. The guidelines, which expanded to include more buyers and sellers and assure advertisers that ads will not be placed by inappropriate content, were updated in July 2013. Those on board with the program include: Conde Nast, Univision Communications, Rocket Fuel, Tremor Video, Videology and more.

The set-top-box given to pay-TV providers has been key for the cable and satellite provider business. Apple‘s Steve Jobs even said that pay TV providers are preventing innovation in the industry because of the OTT box. However, with Amazon‘s recently announced Fire TV device, Google‘s Chromecast, Apple TV, Roku, Xbox, PlayStation, Aereo and the many TV Everywhere apps networks are creating, the business model and industry is quickly evolving. Shareablee‘s Q1 2014 Social TV Rankings revealed ABC is the top network when it came to viewers most likely to share a network’s content. The findings included:
Networks / Facebook and Twitter Sharing (Retweet, shares) / Percent change from Q4 2014.

1. TV Broadcast Category Average / 4,155,137 / 25 percent
2. ABC Network Total / 6,555,332 / 86 percent
3. NBC Network Total / 6,341,956 / 7 percent
4. FOX Network Total / 1,974,495 / -7 percent
5. CBS Network Total / 1,748,764 / 3 percent

Overall, in Q1 there were 780 million total social actions across all networks, which is up 27 percent from Q4 2013. Facebook was the biggest driver of sharing across the TV networks, with 70 percent of all shares compared with Twitter. "When a TV fan shares content from a program to his/her network, it is the greatest endorsement of the program that is possible on a social network," Shareablee’s CEO Tania Yuki said. "Valued somewhere between intent to view and a real-world recommendation that others tune-in, these kinds of social endorsements can reveal the true level of excitement by fans surrounding current and upcoming programming."

EXEC MOVES

Hulu appointed Jenny Wall as its new Senior Vice president, Head of Marketing. Most recently, she lead the global creative team at Netflix.

Corbis Entertainment has brought on Corey Silverman as its Head of Global Sales. Silverman was previously the Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Access 360 Media.

News platform Tout hired David Parsons as its new Chief Revenue Officer. He was formerly the Vice President of Business Development at Scripps Networks Interactive.

DDB California hired Jonathan Bryne as the new Creative Director. Prior to DDB, he held a similar role at Venables Bell & Partners.

Espial announced System Architect Steve Morris has been named a member of the Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV steering group, and chair the association’s Spec Group Terminals Task Force. HbbTV is an industry standard to providing open and business neutral tech platform that combines TV services through broadcast with services through broadband connection through Smart TVs and set-top boxes.
