Last week, Snapchat unveiled a new ten-second advertising format that costs two cents per view and will run between articles and videos on its Discover section. Discover launched in January with media partners such as Daily Mail, Vice, MTV, CNN, and Cosmopolitan; advertisers were originally paying $100 CPMs (the cost to reach 1,000 viewers), twice as much than most online video ads.
 
Vice Media named Conde Nast veteran Richard Beckman, as the millennial network’s Chief Revenue Officer. Most recently, Beckman was CEO of Three Lions Entertainment. From 2010-2012, he was CEO of Prometheus Global Media, publisher of The Hollywood Reporter and Billboard.

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS
 

Turner’s Cartoon Network premiered its first original digital series, Mighty Magiswords, on its Anything app, which streams short-form content to users. The series will also be released across other CN platforms, including the Watch Cartoon Network TV everywhere app. Turner plans to add mini video games, activities and interactive shorts on Anything.
 
YouTube darling Grace Helbig and the Google video platform teamed up to created a Mother’s Day GIF creator for last-minute gif(t)’s for moms. Fans were encouraged to make and share a #ThxMom GIF via gracehelbig.tumblr.com, post to social media networks and tweet the hashtag. In addition, Google Play Music launched special Mother’s Day playlists to soundtrack activities with mothers such as “A Fancy Brunch,” “A Sunny Celebration” and “A Feel-Good Dance Party.”

Houston, we have a video viewability problem. Nearly 46 percent of video ads across desktop and mobile web are never seen, according to a new report from Google. Based on the video ads the search giant serves across the web, that number does not include spots on YouTube. Google reports 91 percent of YT video ads on sites and apps showed up on a screen at least half in view for at least two seconds (MRC standard). Of the unviewed ads, not including those not viewed on YT, 76 percent never appeared on the screen or played in a background. The remaining 24 percent could be seen, but a user scrolled past the video before playing for two seconds. YT only runs video ads within the player, which is part of the TrueView that only charges advertisers if the brand’s ad is watched for 30 seconds.
