"Start the movie!" Vice execs shouted at the Sunshine Cinemas before the lights dimmed for its NewFront presentation on Friday afternoon. The company, known for its grit and male millennial focus as the "CNN of the Streets" kept the event short and to the point, with CEO Shane Smith noting, "Content is what we stand for as a brand and as humans; we’re creating a chronicle of our time." Vice unveiled a new channel called Vice Sports to debut in June, along with a third season of Fresh Off The Boat with NYC chef Eddie Huang for its recently launched food channel, Munchies.
Other shows include a discussion with innovators discussing the future called Motherboard Roundtable (on the Motherboard channel), environmental critique docu-series Toxic (Vice News) and the third season renewal of the Vice HBO newsmagazine series. "We didn’t need TV to validate us, but it has because we are great storytellers," Smiths said. He also announced that YouTube will continue its national marketing campaign for the Vice News channel.

Time Warner Cable hosted its first NewFront at 42nd Street’s Liberty Theatre, and touted its theme of "Forward, Fast" referring to the cable company’s 37 sports, news and lifestyle networks that reach 15 million+ households. At the end of the show, the cable company flashed back to the 1990’s with a live performance of "Kind & Generous" from Natalie Merchant, and a "prancing routine" from the woman behind the viral video Prancercise (10 million views). "Advertisers tell us they want help in making digital work for them," EVP and COO, Media Services Joan Gillman told Cynopsis. "And we want happy clients." Other highlights include:
- TV Tribes: TWC says there are more than 28 "TV tribes," or social communities that are passionate about specific entertainment genres, and informed by content, context and their local market.
- TWC will roll out its Audience Selected measurement tool to better target viewers on any medium or device with the "Audience Finder."
- Group VP of Sales Steve Jacobs announced the internal creative agency called Kernel. Its motto? "Let’s grow your brand."
The Wall Street Journal debuted a slate of original video programming at its NewFront at Espace with the theme "Right Now." The event was hosted by WSJ Live anchor and reporter Tanya Rivero, and featured keynotes from Robert Thomson, Chief Executive of News Corp, as well as remarks from Trevor Fellows, Head of Global Advertising Sales. "Our theme reflects the enormous appetite for accurate, timely, and above all else, reliable news – all of which The Wall Street Journal delivers. ‘Right Now’ also speaks to our ability to provide compelling, real-time marketing solutions through our suite of custom solutions," said Fellows.
New original content consists of:
- Future of Everything, about the science and technology behind the inventions, innovations and ingenious concepts that shape life as we know it.
- An aggregation of the WSJ’s best video from the publisher’s staff called Signal, a global digital video magazine.
- The Short Answer, which unpacks complex, breaking news topics through data, graphics, animation, hosted by WSJ Senior Producer Jason Bellini.
- A second season of docu-series on the world’s innovative start-ups Startup of the Year.
PopSugar got sweeter with eight new original programs and 11 renewed series at its NewFront presentation at the Industria Superstudio. Over the next year, the media company, which targets women 18-40, will unveil new programs from NBC‘s Community Gillian Jacobs and Katherine Schwarzenegger (yep, Arnold and Maria’s daughter) as well as a partnership with MCN Above Average. Also notable:
- PopSugar event specials: A new long-form series that will showcase broadcasts like Live Holiday Gift Guide or the Award Season Live Viewing Party.
- Seriously Distracted: PS’s first scripted comedy series is produced with Above Average, and follows a group of women at the bottom rung of a New York PR firm. Also on the horizon are millennial relationship series #FullDisclosure, What now? With Katherine Schwarzenegger, inspired by her new book I Just Graduated…Now What?, and Five Things I’ve Always Wanted To Ask You, Mom which will feature a celebrities and their mothers, from former co-executive producer of The Oprah Show Lisa Erspamer.
- A year-round digital content partnership with the Las Vegas culture-festival Life Is Beautiful, which presents 75 music acts, 60 chefs, 25 keynote speakers, 25 artists on 15 blocks in the city.
YouTube make-up star Michelle Phan kicked off Endemol Beyond USA‘s NewFront presentation at The Monarch on Friday to announce that she and her women’s MCN FAWN (For All Women Network) will collaborate with Endemol to co-create new originals and mentor new talent for the young digital platform. "Michelle’s global following and her outstanding onscreen and creative talent makes FAWN a perfect fit for Endemol Beyond’s fast growing premium content network," said International Managing Director Georg Ramme.Endemol also showcased other deals with YouTube star MattyB, Vince creator Brittany Furlan and a general partnership with popstar Pitbull and Courtney Love.

TubeFilter reports that the acquisition could be costing Relativity $350 million and $1 billion.
