Cinema network NCM Media Networks presented its upfront at New York’s AMC Lincoln Square movie theatre yesterday, unveiling a pre-show called FirstLook, a Shazam integration, and a digital companion series called FirstLook5. The shazamable series will allow advertisers to push deals and digital content directly to mobile devices – which makes sense, since 85% of people use smartphones before planning to see a movie. NCM also announced partnerships with MakerStudios to bring its stars to NCM theatres and The Grammy Awards for a behind-the-scenes peek of the ceremony and featured artists. NCM recently acquired competitor Screenvision for $375 million.

At Telemundo‘s upfront in New York’s Frederick P. Rose Hall, the network announced a deal to distribute Mashable videos to Telemundo viewers on its digital, social and VOD platforms. The English-Spanish network’s multi-platform studio Fluency also introduced two new digital series, The Home Team and Nobody Walks in LA. Additionally, NBC Sports and Telemundo Sports are teaming to premiere a digital experience for deportestelemundo.com.

YouTube star Toby Turner of the cartoon series Tobuscus Animated Adventures has inked a book deal with HarperCollins Children’s Books based on the series. The first book will be released in fall 2014, with two sequels to follow in the summer of 2016 and 2017, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Turner’s series averages ten million viewers per video.

The set-top-box given to pay-TV providers has been key for the cable and satellite business. What’s Trending and Ford Escape are looking to send aspiring artists to perform at the Tennessee music festival Bonnaroo. Artists can join the social contest Escape to Bonnaroo at whatstrending.com/escapetobonnaroo, and fans can vote by liking and sharing videos on social media. Facebook is gearing up for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil by releasing data to entice marketers to jump on board with the social platform. Facebook revealed that of its 1.2 billion users, 500 million are soccer fans with 48.9 million in the U.S. The U.S. fans were highly active on Facebook: 62 percent checked the site every day, and a fan posts 1.7 times more photos, sends 1.9 more messages, posts 1.8 more updates and makes 1.7 times more comments than the average user. Also, during a soccer match, U.S. fans made 16.8 million related "actions," with 89 percent coming from mobile phones.


Netflix U.S. broadband traffic increased by 31.6 percent since 2013, and accounted for 34.2 percent of traffic during primetime hours in March 2014. Variety reports research from network equipment company Sandvine also showed YouTube‘s traffic dipped to 13.2 percent, from 18.6 percent last year. Amazon Instant Video slightly increased from 1.6 percent to 1.9 percent, along with Hulu from 1.4 percent to 1.7 percent of total traffic in 2014. As for mobile networks, YT lead the way with 17.6 percent traffic share and Facebook with 14 percent.

BrightTag announced Warren Billington has joined the company as Managing Director, Australia, New Zealand and Southeast Asia. Billington came from Acxiom before his new role with BrightTag.


A monologue from comedian Louie C.K.‘s FX show Louie is causing quite the stir. The seven-minute speech delivered by actress Sarah Baker about life as a "fat girl" hit home on body image and dating. However, it had viewers and reviewers questioning the message of the monologue (originally written by Louie C.K.) as well as his characterization of Vanessa.
