IN THE NEWS
New streaming regulations introduced by the UK government prompted a threat by Netflix to purge content from its UK library to avoid potential fines of up to $310,000. The Media Bill calls for regulator Ofcam to treat streaming companies the way it does traditional broadcasters, including fining them for content that does not follow guidelines for impartiality and matters of “political or industrial controversy.” Said Netflix, “Without considerably greater clarity around the scope and application of these provisions, it would inevitably be easier to remove content pre-emptively from our UK catalogue than risk an onerous compliance burden and potential liability.” Disney raised similar objections on behalf of Disney+.
Twitter is also having issues abroad, having pulled out from agreeing to voluntary guidelines that will become mandatory for tech companies when the Digital Services Act goes into effect in the EU in August. Noting the dangers of disinformation, France’s Digital Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said during an interview on France Info, “Twitter, if it repeatedly doesn’t follow our rules, will be banned from the EU.”
The writers’ strike disrupted Upfront events, but has it impacted ad spend? Not yet, according to interviews conducted by Advertiser Perceptions. While there is uneasiness on both the agency and marketer side about the strike and diminished options for ad placements, advertisers say they don’t see the strike greatly impacting their advertising decisions. Most feel that there is plenty of content available between sports and non-scripted programs as well as VOD, so they aren’t likely to hold back on their spend due to the strike. Additionally, Advertiser Perceptions found that advertisers that have already committed budgets to programming requiring imminent writing, filming or production will look to move those dollars within the programmer’s ecosystem and expect makegoods for these buys. However, should the strike drag on, advertisers might rethink their spending and contingency plans as availability of premium inventory declines.
And some top execs might rethink that private plane. The WGA is asking Netflix and Comcast shareholders to reject proposed pay packages for top executives. “While investors have long taken issue with Netflix’s executive pay, the compensation structure is even more egregious against the backdrop of the strike,” wrote WGA West President Meredith Stiehm to Netflix shareholders. “In the midst of a disruptive labor dispute, Netflix is asking shareholders to give retroactive advisory approval of the company’s 2022 reported executive compensation totaling over $166 million. By contrast, the proposed improvements the WGA currently has on the table would cost Netflix an estimated $68 million per year.” A similar letter went out to Comcast shareholders, objecting to compensation totaling $130 million. The writers’ strike started May 2.
The third installment of The Senate Project series will feature Senators Joni Ernst (R-IA) and Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) in a forum moderated by FOX News Channel’s chief political anchor Bret Baier on Monday, June 12 at 11a. The event will run live, commercial free on FOX News Media’s streaming platform, FOX Nation that day and will later air on FNC on Sunday, June 18 at 10p. The Senate Project seeks to bring together senators from different ends of the political spectrum for civil, substantive discussion and debate aimed at finding potential areas of bipartisan compromise and common ground.

STREAMING
Password sharing by streaming subscribers affects about 51% of all SVOD subscriptions, based on data from Samba TV. Almost half of Netflix and Disney+ customers share their subscription with someone else, with most sharing their account with family members. Of those subscribed to at least one platform, 60% share their password with someone else, with younger viewers most likely to share – or 79% of Gen Z and 74% of Millennials, compared to 52% of Gen X and 38% of Baby Boomers. As Netflix charges a $7.99 monthly fee on subscribers sharing their account, more than 40% of survey respondents said they would be willing to pay more to share their account with someone outside of their home, while 37% said they would cancel their subscription if they could no longer share their password.
