IN THE NEWS

“The Good Fight” will end with upcoming season six on Paramount+. “We’ve loved fighting ‘The Good Fight ’these last six seasons,” said series creators/showrunners Robert and Michelle King. “To be able to tell stories about an upside-down world in real time has been a gift. And to have worked with these talented, brilliant, generous actors, writers and crew has been a blessing. Our hope-slash-scheme is to find ways to work with all of them again in the future.” Currently under production in NYC, season six will premiere Thursday, September 8.

Matthew Morrison (“Glee”) is out as a judge on Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance.” “After filming the audition rounds for the show and completing the selection of the 12 finalists, I did not follow competition production protocols, preventing me from being able to judge the competition fairly,” said Morrison. “I cannot apologize enough to all involved and I will be watching alongside you all on what I know will be one of the best seasons yet.” Morrison was part of a new panel of season 17 judges that also included JoJo Siwa and Stephen “tWitch” Boss.

Lionsgate plans to spin off Starz by the end of the year. The company is in the midst of “a robust and productive process” with bankers and potential partners, said Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer during the company’s earnings call. Lionsgate acquired Starz in 2016 for $4.4 billion.

Trump Media and Technology Group plans to launch a streaming service TMTG+ – it describes in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission as a “non-woke alternative” to the likes of Netflix and Disney+. Programming will include “blue collar comedy, cancelled shows, Trump-specific programming, faith-based shows, family entertainment, shows that embrace the Second Amendment, and news.” The filing said TMTG+ would not censor creators, or push a particular political ideology.

The SEC is questioning the stock purchase that made Elon Musk the company’s largest shareholder, as well as Musk’s claim in a securities document at the time that he was a passive investor. Musk was obligated to disclose his ownership by March 14, but did not do so until April 4. And Musk’s public criticism of Twitter and recommendations about how it should change cast doubt on his status a passive investor.

In related news, a Twitter shareholder filed a class action lawsuit against Twitter and Elon Musk, alleging Musk failed to disclose in a timely manner his approximately 9% stake in Twitter; his invitation to join the company’s board; and his intention to acquire the company. Musk’s tweets during May were labeled unlawful conduct in the complaint, as well as an attempt at market manipulation of Twitter’s stock in order to drive down the purchase price.

Anthony Anderson will not return for season 22 of NBC’s “Law & Order.” Anderson had signed on to reprise his role on the procedural, which initially ran from 1990-2010, for just one season. The actor will headline reality series “Anthony Anderson and Mom: European Vacation” for NBC cousin E!.

Original cast member Alexis Bledsel is leaving Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” ahead of its upcoming fifth season. “After much thought, I felt I had to step away from ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ at this time,” said Bledsel, an Emmy winner for the role. “I am forever grateful to Bruce Miller for writing such truthful and resonant scenes for Emily, and to Hulu, MGM, the cast and crew for their support.”

The frequency of shoppable media has been “growing at speed,” according to a study from the World Federation of Advertisers and Dentsu International. “The trend to making traditional ‘push’ online ad formats more ‘shoppable’ in order to increase immediate conversion within the ad format or media owner app itself, is one that has been growing at speed in the past 12-24 months,” said the study, citing examples like YouTube’s “True View for Action” video and format, and Facebook’s “Commerce Manager.” “We expect more brands to adopt this mechanic…. An increase in collaboration and integration of creative and media efforts will be required to make the most of the opportunity, however,” noted the report.
