NBC Sports continues to announce a bevy of Olympic news, including the announcement that NBC Olympics would be presenting record coverage of the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, totaling 85+ hours and more than 50 hours in primetime across NBC, NBCSN, Olympic Channel: Home of Team USA, and NBC Sports digital platforms in the lead up to the Tokyo. That marks the most evet for the Team Trials, with 22 days of Trials coverage overall, including 13 nights in primetime on NBC, covering four sports — swimming, gymnastics, track & field, and diving.
On the talent front, Mary Carillo, Andrea Joyce and Jimmy Roberts will once again serve as NBC Olympics commentators this summer in Tokyo. Carillo and Roberts will serve as correspondents in Tokyo, while Joyce serves as a reporter at the gymnastics competition and handles play-by-play for rhythmic gymnastics. Carillo will also call tennis and open water swimming. Meanwhile, Leigh Diffey has been named the play-by-play voice of NBC Olympics’ track & field coverage.
PROGRAMMING
Networks began to solidify their college football lineup for the upcoming season. FOX Sports revealed select games from its 2021 college football schedule, which includes Oregon/Ohio State on Sept. 11 at noon, Nebraska/Oklahoma on Sept. 18, and Notre Dame/Wisconsin from Chicago’s Soldier Field on Sept. 25. Big Ten matchups on the channel will include the Sept. 2 Ohio State/Minnesota battle, Penn State/Wisconsin on Sept. 4 and Ohio State/Michigan on Nov. 27. Other highlights will see LSU/UCLA on Sept. 4, and Stanford/USC on Sept. 11, among others.
Around the dial, ESPN’s college football lineup will see approximately 1,000 regular season games across all networks, gearing up for the return of a 40-game Bowl Season schedule that includes the exclusive presentation of the College Football Playoff Semifinals. ESPN concludes the season in the Circle City with the CFP National Championship on Jan.10 in Indianapolis. The first three weeks along will see more than 100 games, including an ABC lineup that includes Georgia/Clemson and Alabama/Miami. ESPN carries the ACC, American, Big 12 and Pac-12 Championship Games on ABC the first weekend of December. The Pac-12 Championship Game is slated for primetime on ABC (8p) on Friday, Dec. 3, with the ACC, Big 12 and American all set for the spotlight on ABC on Saturday, Dec. 4. Additionally, the Rocket Mortgage MAC Football Championship and Sun Belt Championship Game will each be televised live on ESPN.
CBS Sports also announced its 2021 college football broadcast schedule and windows, which delivers a total of 21 games, including five doubleheaders and the SEC on CBS. The 2021 SEC on CBS schedule totals 15 games, including the SEC Championship on Dec. 4 at 4p. This year’s SEC on CBS schedule begins on Sept. 18 with Alabama and Florida. In addition to the traditional Saturday SEC on CBS Game of the Week at its familiar 3:30p, there will be a primetime SEC doubleheader on Oct. 9 and an afternoon SEC doubleheader the following weekend on Oct. 16. CBS Sports’ college football schedule kicks off on Sept. 11 at 3:30p with Air Force facing Navy on the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
CBS Sports Network rolled out its 2021 college football schedule, featuring matchups from conference partners Conference USA, Mid-American Conference and Mountain West Conference, along with all UConn football home games. CBS Sports Network will also televise the Conference USA Championship game for the third consecutive year on Dec. 4 at 1:30p. The season begins with UConn/Fresno State on Aug. 28.
Turner Sports officially announced that Wayne Gretzky reached a multi-year agreement with the company to offer studio analysis during key moments of the NHL regular season and throughout the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Play-by-play commentator Kenny Albert and analyst Eddie Olczyk will call live games for Turner Sports throughout the regular season and the Stanley Cup Playoffs, airing on TNT and TBS.
On the ratings front, the WNBA is scoring upticks over recent years. Its coverage on ESPN is now averaging 357,000 viewers, for a 74% gain over the 2020 season average as well as a 45% jump over the 2019 season average, according to Nielsen.
Showtime cemented its announce team for the event headlined between Floyd Mayweather and Logan Paul. MAYWEATHER vs. PAUL: BRAGGING RIGHTS is being produced and distributed by Showtime PPV and will take place June 6 at 8p. , live at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla. Brian Custer hosts, and be joined by comedic duo Desus Nice and The Kid Mero. Calling the action at ringside will be Mauro Ranallo, alongside analyst Al Bernstein and Abner Mares. Also joining the team will be Brendan Schaub. The in-ring announcer will be Jimmy Lennon Jr.
NBC Sports serves up live coverage of 2021 Roland-Garros matches, beginning with the first round in Paris on Sunday at Noon exclusively on Peacock and Monday at 11a on NBC. Live coverage culminates with the women’s final on June 12 at 9a and the men’s final on June 13 at 9a on NBC. Analysts Mary Carillo and John McEnroe, who teamed to win the mixed doubles title at the 1977 French Open, will call this weekend’s matches.
Turner Sports will present the next edition of Capital One’s The Match, featuring Phil and Tom Brady teeing off against Bryson DeChambeau and Aaron Rodgers. TNT will exclusively televise the event, to be held July 6, with live coverage beginning a 5p from Moonlight Basin in Big Sky, Montana. In addition to live televised coverage, interactive social and digital content will be available on Bleacher Report and House of Highlights leading up to and during the event. Capital One’s The Match will include donations made to Feeding America, among additional charitable beneficiaries.
ESPN recruited its roster of hosts, analysts and reporters for its upcoming presentation of the UEFA European Football Championship 2020, running June 11 – July 11. ESPN’s Rece Davis and Kelly Cates of Sky Sports and BBC Radio 5 Live in the UK headline the studio hosts for EURO 2020 and will be joined by ESPN’s Sebastian Salazar, Kay Murray and Dalen Cuff. The studio will feature Steve McManaman and Julie Foudy. Newcomers include Italian star forward Alessandro Del Piero, who joined ESPN FC in March; U.S. Men’s National Team goalkeeper Tim Howard; German National Team midfielder Sami Khedira; Wales coach Chris Coleman, who led his home nation to its first-ever UEFA EURO appearance in 2016; and Premier League center back Nedum Onuoha.
NBC Sports and Peacock announced the schedule for the 2021 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship schedule, with coverage of all 12 rounds presented across NBC, NBCSN, Peacock, NBCSports.com, and the NBC Sports app. Race coverage begins Saturday, May 29, with the Fox Raceway National in Pala, Calif., with live coverage of the Moto2s at 6p on NBCSN and Peacock. NBC and NBCSN will combine to present every Moto 2 from all 12 rounds of the 2021 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship season.
