05/22/19: NASCAR gets ready to Salute the Troops

From Memorial Day weekend through Independence Day weekend, the NASCAR industry will honor United States Armed Forces heroes and their families as part of NASCAR Salutes Refreshed by Coca-Cola. The initiative returns with the 600 Miles of Remembrance during Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway as Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race cars carry the name of a fallen service member on the windshield during the race in honor of those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Coca-Cola returns as the presenting sponsor of the event and will join the USA to honor military spouses and their families across the different military branches at Pocono Raceway and Michigan International Speedway. Then at Sonoma Raceway and Chicagoland Speedway, an at-track experience with Troops to the Track Hosted by Coca-Cola will showcase how the industry and its partners support military members in transition to civilian life.
 
“NASCAR has always taken immense pride in honoring the military men and women who’ve bravely served our nation,” said Steve Phelps, NASCAR president. “Each year, NASCAR Salutes unites our industry to celebrate these heroes and their families and recognize them for the sacrifices made to preserve our freedoms.”
 
 
PROGRAMMING

Congratulations to the winners of the 40th annual Sports Emmy Awards, which wrapped up with ESPN and NBC each nabbing six trophies each while their network groups drummed up eight each. TNT notched five wins, followed FS1 and HBO with four apiece to round out the top five channels. NBC’s XXIII Olympic Winter Games from PyeongChang came in as the top program overall with three Sports Emmys. Among some of the marquee categories, Fox’s coverage of the 114th World Series between the Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers won for Outstanding Live Sports Special, NBC’s Sunday Night Football received the Outstanding Live Sports Series trophy, and CBS tackled Outstanding Playoff Coverage for the epic AFC Championship Game between the New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs. Longtime basketball announcer Dick Vitale was presented with Lifetime Achievement Award for Sports. “Every day, the sports broadcasting industry brings the American public some of the most exciting, skillful, and entertaining television anywhere,” NATAS Chairman Terry O’Reilly said.
 
Monday’s edition of First Take on ESPN was spiked, courtesy of Magic Johnson. The episode featured the first in-depth television interview with the former Los Angeles Lakers president of basketball operations since his abrupt departure from the team last month and scored a 54% rise in viewership during the 10-11a hour, averaging 625,000 viewers, according to Nielsen. Monday’s complete two-hour edition of First Take ( from 10a-noon) was up 27% over last year averaging 597,000 viewers.
 
ESPN paves the road to the Women’s College World Series with the NCAA Division I Softball Super Regionals set to begin tomorrow and 24 potential games overall set to span four days with up to 11 on ESPN, nine on ESPN2 and four on ESPNU. Highlighting this week’s action, the No. 1 Oklahoma Sooners will host No. 16 Northwestern in Norman, Okla. while the defending National Champions No. 4 Florida State host No. 13 Oklahoma State, who advanced to the Super Regionals for the second time in program history. James Madison, the first unseeded team to advance since 2016, will travel cross-country to face the No. 2 UCLA Bruins, the sport’s winningest program with 12 national titles.
 
The ICC announced broadcast and digital distribution plans for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019, which will be broadcast live to more than 200 territories via 25 broadcast partners.Around the world, the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 will be broadcast on Star Sports (India and the rest of the Indian Sub-continent), Sky Sports (United Kingdom & Republic of Ireland), SuperSport (South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa), OSN (Middle East & North Africa), Fox Sports Australia and Channel 9 (Australia), Willow TV (USA), Sky TV and Prime (New Zealand), Ten Sports and PTV (Pakistan), ESPN (Caribbean), Gazi TV, Maasranga and BTV (all Bangladesh), SLRC (Sri Lanka) and Fox Network Group (China and South East Asia), Digicel (Asia Pacific), Radio Television Afghanistan (Afghanistan) and Yupp TV (Continental Europe and Central Asia). In Canada, Willow TV will launch a channel ahead of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019, while FOX Sports serves China with 25 live matches with nine more on delay.  
 
UFC will release its Emmy-nominated short film series, UFC 25 Years in Short on YouTube. The docuseries, which had been exclusive to UFC FIGHT PASS, will now see films premiering every weekday through June 21 on the platform “UFC 25 Years in Short” premiered on UFC Fight Pass in fall of 2018, so the time is right to showcase it to a new audience,” said Chris Kartzmark, UFC Senior Vice President of Production and Programming. “YouTube, which has a massive reach, offers the perfect platform for current fans and new fans to binge-watch these short films and catch up on UFC history in fun and unique way.”

Major League Lacrosse announced a new partnership with Anheuser-Busch to become the official beer partner of the 2019 Major League Lacrosse All-Star Game, being held at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, MD on July 27. This deal will also include prominent signage on the playing field, fan zone activation, and various on-site promotions at several sports bars and retail locations.
 
The USGA is reportedly partnering with Marvel Entertainment for a new comic that will launch at the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links next month, following Iron Man and other Avengers as they teach other Marvel characters about golf. “For 80 years, comic books have been at the core of the Marvel Universe, introducing fans of all ages to new adventures, ideas, and experiences through visual storytelling,” said Michael Pasciullo, SVP of Marketing and Communications at Marvel Entertainment. “We’re thrilled to be teaming up with the USGA to use our iconic heroes and that storytelling to inspire the next generation of athletes and golfers.”

Sportradar announced a long-term extension of its agreement with The Associated Press. Following a successful three-year collaboration as AP’s official sports data provider, Sportradar will continue in the role to deliver its core sports data content to AP’s traditional and digital platforms. In addition to sharing its data APIs, including ones for the NBA, MLB, Soccer and NCAA Sports, Sportradar is providing AP with access to its market-leading radar360 research engine and support from its best-in-class Research Desk.

State Farm is extending its League of Legends run, announcing a new deal that will carry its sponsorship through 2021 for multiple esports properties including: North America’s League of Legends Championship Series; League’s three global events: League of Legends World Championship, Mid-Season Invitational, and All-Star Event; and the League of Legends College Championship presented by State Farm. Activation elements include: The State Farm Analyst Desk for LCS broadcasts as well as all English-language global broadcasts of global events, and the League of Legends College Championship; Integrated in-broadcast/in-steam content such as Assist of the Week, I’m Helping segment, and the Level-Up segment; Digital “Cheerboard” printers at all LCS home & away events and US-based global events, including the most recent LCS Spring Finals in St. Louis and the 2018 All-Star Event; and “Cospitality” Tents at LCS regional finals and global events, where fans can share their passion for cosplay.
 
Lotsa news out of DreamHack. The Gaming festival is partnering with Esports Management and ZOWIE to launch DreamHack Showdown, an all-women CS:GO tournament featuring a $100,000 prize pool. The CS:GO players will have access to dedicated player support, professional event facilities, promotion and a proper prize pool and running at DreamHack Valencia from July 5-7. This partnership is the first large-scale collaboration aimed to elevate ambitious women CS:GO players in the global esports scene and provide a dedicated platform to support their professional growth.
 
Meanwhile, DreamHack also announced a partnership with golf’s European Tour to create the European eTour Championship at this week’s Made in Denmark presented by FREJA. Eight of the best players from around the world in the most popular online golf game “World Golf Tour” by Topgolf will go head-to-head in knockout match play format.
