IN THE NEWS
“CNN should be where people come for the best version of the truth and for journalism, and that is what we are building,” said Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav at MoffettNathanson’s media conference in NYC. Zaslav also had the back of CNN CEO Chris Licht, who caught flak in some quarters for airing a town hall for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump that included vocal Trump supporters. Zaslav said the news net’s tack toward the middle is winning over advertisers. “Chris [Licht] is rebuilding the network. It’s going to take some time. But advertisers are interested in CNN again,” said Zaslav. “They don’t want to be part of an advocacy network. We’ve had meeting after meeting and they say, ‘We are with you.’”
“All American” is the only CW original scripted series on the net’s fall schedule (“Walker” is moving to midseason). In the midst of a writers’ strike and tilting towards lower cost programming since its acquisition by Nexstar, The CW slate includes returning unscripted series “Who’s Line Is It Anyway?”, “Masters of Illusion,” and “World’s Funniest Animals,” along with “FBoy Island,” picked up after it was canceled by HBO Max after two seasons, along with international acquired dramas and comedies. “This fall, The CW embarks on the first step to become bigger and broader by offering our viewers a wide variety of programming from premium adult dramas to bold comedies and binge-worthy unscripted franchises,” said Brad Schwartz, President of Entertainment, The CW Network, adding that the net has 12 scripted and 15 unscripted series in production.
“We’re excited that The CW is now in the hands of Nexstar,” said Schwartz. “The CW is now run by broadcasters whose only goal is to build a strong brand and cultivate emotional attachment to the largest audience possible. Broadcasting is their core business. Our goal is to do what’s best for viewers, for stations and for advertisers. No longer will The CW be built for the benefit of two content studios.” The CW was previously owned by CBS and Warner Bros.
The Supreme Court declined to address the legal liability shield that protects tech platforms like Twitter, Google and Facebook from bearing responsibility for posts by their users. In a unanimous decision in Twitter v. Taamneh, which accused Twitter, Google and Facebook of allowing ISIS to use their platforms to recruit and train terrorists, the court said it would not address the application of Section 230 to a complaint “that appears to state little, if any, plausible claim for relief.” “Companies, scholars, content creators and civil society organizations who joined with us in this case will be reassured by this result,” said Halimah DeLaine Prado, Google’s general counsel.
Eighty-three percent of American respondents to a Whip Media survey were aware of the WGA writers’ strike, and 60% said the strike could be significantly disruptive to their viewing activity later in the year. Seventy-two percent said they would be somewhat or very upset if new movies and shows were delayed for several months by the strike. And 34% of respondents between the ages of 18-34 said they would turn to more internet-based creators if there is a significant delay in production and releases.
Meanwhile, the national board of SAG-AFTRA voted to ask members for authorization to go on strike if an agreement can’t be reached with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers by the end of the guild’s current contract on June 30. “Earning a living as a professional performer has become increasingly difficult, with both inflation and the streaming ecosystem undercutting compensation — all the while, corporate profits and executive pay at studios continue to rise,” said the Board. “Add to this the unregulated use of artificial intelligence and the burdens of the industrywide shift to self-tape, the outlook for working actors becomes unsustainable without transformative change.”

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Among the unscripted series ordered by The CW are “The Great American Bakeover” (w/t), from Velvet Hammer. The show helps struggling bakeries improve their business. “The Force,” executive produced by SallyAnn Salsano (“Jersey Shore”), follows law enforcement officers, and dating series “Patti Stanger: Millionaire Matchmaking,” from IPC, helps singles find their perfect match. The CW is also in production on jewel thief drama “Joan,” from Snowed-In Productions, and spin-off “The Librarians: The Next Chapter,” from Electric Entertainment and The CW. All are slated to launch in 2024.
OUTtv has commissioned two new series. Short-form dramedy “We Three Queens” is produced by Thomas Rees and Michael Young; documentary “I Work From Home” comes from Border2Border Entertainment.
The Story Collective has invested in comedy-drama production company Mighty Pebble Pictures, set up and is led by James De Frond and Tom Davis (“Murder in Successville”). The company plans to develop and produce drama, comedy and dramedy projects, and has early active developments in the market.
Added to the cast of “Zoey 102,” the original movie based on characters from the live-action Nickelodeon series “Zoey 101” as they reunite for a wedding, are Dean Geyer (“Glee”), Owen Thiele (“Theater Camp”) and Thomas Lennon (“Reno 911”). The film will make its debut on Paramount+ this summer.
NEW & RETURNING SERIES
HBO Max limited series “Full Circle,” focused on an investigation into a botched kidnapping, premieres July 13. Zazie Beetz, Claire Danes, Jim Gaffigan, Jharrel Jerome, Timothy Olyphant, CCH Pounder, Phaldut Sharma, Adia, Sheyi Cole, Gerald Jones, Suzanne Savoy, Ethan Stoddard, Lucian Zanes and Dennis Quaid star.
Season three of “The Snoopy Show” premieres June 9 on Apple TV+, followed by new special “Snoopy Presents: One-of-a-Kind Marcie” on August 18. New series “Camp Snoopy” arrives in 2024, along with special “Snoopy Presents: Welcome Home, Franklin.”
Hulu’s revival of “Futurama” arrives July 24. The animated comedy ran on Fox from 2007-09 and Comedy Central from 2010-13.
COMING UP
“The Critics Choice Awards” show returns to The CW on January 14, a week after the Golden Globes ceremony. Last year, the Critics Choice event “was a far better predictor of the Academy Awards than the Golden Globes,” pointed out CW head Brad Schwartz. “With a little bit of support and a bit of marketing, a little more oomph behind it, it could have almost replaced the Golden Globes, maybe, with everything going on there.”
“100 Years of Warner Bros.”, four Max Original documentary specials narrated by Morgan Freeman and directed by Leslie Iwerks (“The Imagineering Story,” “Recycled Life”), debuts Thursday, May 25 with the first two specials. The third and fourth specials will stream June 1 on Max.
STREAMING
Six months in, Netflix counts nearly five million global monthly active users for its ad-supported platform, but “We have a long way to go to build scale in advertising,” acknowledged Co-CEO Ted Sarandos at the company’s virtual Upfront presentation. About 80% of viewing by subscribers on the new plan is on a TV, and the median viewer age is 34, according to the streamer. Wall Street liked the sound of those numbers, boosting the company’s stock almost 10% after the news broke.
On May 23, HBO Max will become Max, and users can customize their profiles by choosing from a collection of more than 350 characters. New avatars include the likes of Harry, Hermione, Ron, Dobby, Voldemort, Professor McGonagall, and Hagrid from “Harry Potter”; Joel, Ellie and a Clicker from “The Last of Us”; Tanya, Portia and Valentina from “The White Lotus”; and more. Fans can also choose from Discovery favorites like Chip & Joanna Gaines from “Fixer Upper.” Once a user selects an avatar, it will appear across all supported platforms where they are signed in.
Cineflix Rights is launching three FAST channels – Real Disaster Channel, Crime & Justice, and Property & Reno – featuring more than 1,000 hours of content. The channels are being rolled out globally on various platforms, including Amazon Freevee and Xumo Play in the US, Roku in Canada, as well as with other partners in the coming months.
TECH TALK
To support developers conducting real-world experiments that assess the readiness of a web without third-party cookies, Google plans to disable third-party cookies for 1% of Chrome users in 1Q24. “It’s important for companies to evaluate solutions that incorporate the Privacy Sandbox APIs,” wrote Victor Wong, Senior Director of Product Management at Google, in a blog post. In 3Q23, Google will introduce the ability for developers to simulate Chrome third-party cookie deprecation for a configurable percentage of users. The plan is to completely deprecate third-party cookies in second half of 2024.
AI Is a hot topic, and one addressed at YouTube’s Brandcast event. “Generative AI is at an inflection point,” said CEO Neal Mohan. “Our teams are already using AI to get ads in front of the right audiences, to improve measurement, or to flip a creative to reach viewers wherever they’re watching, from Shorts to the living room. But this is really just the beginning – simply put, AI will transform the way we make videos. You can imagine that with just the click of a button, I could change my hair color or change my background to instantly transport myself from the desert to a forest. Google AI is accelerating creativity, and the possibilities will extend beyond anything we can imagine today.”
There was a 70% jump in bot fraud on ad-tiered streaming in 2022 versus 2021, according to DoubleVerify’s annual Insights Report. “An increase in free, ad-supported streaming is helping to fuel Connected TV’s rapid growth,” said Mark Zagorski, CEO of DoubleVerify. “But with growth come growing pains. As CTV becomes a top channel for consumers and advertisers alike, it also becomes a target for fraud, making measurement and protection a critical part of validating the efficacy of campaigns.”
SPORTS ROUNDUP
NFL content on YouTube gained a 27% increase in watch time year-over–year, with 1.9 billion views, said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell NFL at YouTube’s Brandcast event, adding that “NFL Sunday Ticket” is “only the beginning. As part of this partnership, YouTube creators are getting first-of-its-kind access to the NFL: our games, our Clubs, our athletes, and the fans who love them, so that the NFL can reach fans in more ways than ever.”
FOX Sports announced the return of horse racing legend Tom Durkin to the booth for the 155th running of the Belmont Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets on June 10. Durkin called some 80,000 races during his 43-year career, the last 24 years of which he spent as the NYRA announcer before his retirement in 2014. “The Belmont Stakes has been an iconic part of sports culture for more than 150 years,” said Durkin. “There is nothing like the energy and enthusiasm around Belmont Park with a Triple Crown on the line. It is the apotheosis of excitement.”
OutKick, the multimedia sports platform, saw a record increase of more than 140% in YouTube subscribers from March to April 2023. The platform also had a record month of video views on YouTube with 284.2 million, which is up 909% versus March 2023, according to Shareablee.
The broadcast schedule for FOX Sports’ broadcast of the FIFA U-20 World Cup Argentina 2023 includes the United States U-20 Men’s Youth National Team (MYNT) open play vs. Ecuador on the first day of the tournament, Saturday, May 20, at 1:50p on FOX Soccer Plus. The U.S. U-20 MYNT face Fiji on Tuesday, May 23, at 1:50p on FS2, and close out the group stage vs. Slovakia on Friday, May 26, at 1:50p on FS2. The FIFA U-20 World Cup™ will take place across four Argentinian cities: La Plata, Mendoza, San Juan and Santiago del Estero.
GOING GLOBAL
Zurich Avenue has unveiled development project “Hansen,” a TV series based on the German book series by Ellin Carsta.
Fremantle has acquired the global distribution rights for “Bardot,” a documentary feature about the actress Brigitte Bardot. The film, from Featuristic Films and Timpelpictures, is set to premiere on TF1 in France later this year.
Canadian-US multicultural children’s entertainment company bulbKIDZstruck a licensing agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery Latin America on the animated preschool series “NuNi,” launching June 5 on Cartoonito.
