Ncuti Gatwa (“Sex Education”) is taking over as the Doctor in the BBC’s “Doctor Who.” “Sometimes talent walks through the door and it’s so bright and bold and brilliant, I just stand back in awe and thank my lucky stars,” said Russell T Davies, who is returning as showrunner after his last run ended in 2009. “Ncuti dazzled us, seized hold of the Doctor and owned those TARDIS keys in seconds.” Jodie Whitaker’s last episode is expected to air later this year.
CBS has given multi-year pickups to series across the “FBI” franchise. The net renewed “FBI” for seasons five and six; “FBI: Most Wanted” for seasons four and five; and “FBI: International” for second and third seasons. “The FBIs are one of the most successful brands in the entire TV landscape and a powerful cornerstone of our number one lineup,” said Kelly Kahl, President of CBS Entertainment. “They’ve attracted a dedicated, loyal fan base, thanks to the extraordinary vision of executive producer Dick Wolf and the talents of all three outstanding casts and creative teams. I know we and our viewers look forward to two additional seasons of engaging, heroic stories.”
Tegna reported record 1Q22 revenue of $774 million, up 6% year-over-year, and subscription revenue of a record $392 million, up 1%. The company also said it is on track to complete its proposed acquisition by an affiliate of Standard General in the second half of the year.
CBS soap “The Young and the Restless” nabbed the most 2022 Daytime Emmy nominations, with 18, followed by ABC’s “General Hospital” with 17. Fresh twist: NBC’s “Days of Our Lives” will compete for Best Daytime Drama with its Peacock spinoff, “Days of Our Lives: Beyond Salem.” Among talk shows, “The Kelly Clarkson Show” landed the most nods, with 10, and “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” in its final year, failed to secure a nomination for Outstanding Entertainment Talk Show Host for the first time in 18 years. CBS will air the Daytime Emmy Awards ceremony Friday, June 24 at 9p.

A limited series adaptation of Toni Morrison novel Sula is in development at HBO. The project, following two Black women from the same neighborhood who take divergent paths, comes from Shannon M. Houston (“Station Eleven”), who has an overall deal at HBO, and Homegrown Pictures, under the company’s first-look deal with Warner Bros. Television Group and HBO.
HBO Max handed a script-to-series order to drama “Anon Pls,” from Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television. The series is based on the debut novel from DeuxMoi, a pseudonymous Instagram account for celebrity gossip.
Jake McDorman (“Dopesick”) will star alongside Betty Gilpin in Peacock drama series “Mrs. Davis,” Tara Hernandez and Damon Lindelof. The series comes from Warner Bros. Television, where both Hernandez and Lindelof are under overall deals, and explores faith versus technology.
FilmRise has entered a deal with Lorne Michaels’ Above Average to create streaming TV episodes featuring comedy sketches taken from the over 40 hours available from the Above Average library. FilmRise will distribute the newly formatted comedy series to digital platforms as well as feature it on the FilmRise Comedy AVOD App and its FAST Channels.

Ink is reimagining its Business Traveler brand with a re-launch across multiple media branches that includes a new TV series in partnership with ReachTV, airing across the network’s screens in over 90 North American airports. The series will bring to life favorite elements of the print magazine.

Oxygen is adding five new series to its true crime slate. “Black Widow Murders”; “The First Mindhunter”; “Manifesto of a Serial Killer”; “Serial Killer Copycat: Baton Rouge” (wt); and “Sleeping With Death” join nine returning series in 4Q22.
USA’s “Miz & Mrs.” returns for season three Monday, June 6 at 11p. This time around, the WWE stars are faced with their biggest challenge yet: raising two toddlers.
Beginning today, the 2022 “Eurovision Song Contest” will be available to stream exclusively on Peacock in the US, both live and on-demand. Former Olympic skater Johnny Weir will host the stream from LA. The competition show’s across-the-pond cousin, “American Song Contest,” airs on NBC.
“Disney’s Summer Magic Quest,” the third installment of Disney’s “Magic Quest” specials, is set to debut with “ZOMBIES 3” stars Meg Donnelly, Pearce Joza, Kylee Russell and Matt Cornett competing inside EPCOT at Walt Disney World Resort on Sunday, June 26 at 7p on Disney Channel.

Integral Ad Science announced additional services to its partnership with TikTok. In addition to the IAS Brand Safety, IAS will now be able to measure viewability, invalid traffic and app-level brand safety, allowing brands and agencies globally to effectively monitor the quality of their media buys on TikTok’s platform.
Podcast advertising grew two times faster in 2021 (+72%) than the total internet ad market, according to IAB’s U.S. Podcast Advertising Revenue Study, which found three key factors helping to drive podcast ad revenue growth:

* Increased use of automated ad tech: The share of ad revenue served via Dynamic Ad Insertion (DAI) has almost doubled in two years to 84% as now both host-read and announcer-read ads are largely being served with this functionality (84% and 85%, respectively).
* Growing investment across more ad categories: The share of ad revenue generated within categories with lower spend volumes has more than tripled in just two years from 8% to 28%

TelevisaUnivision has entered into an agreement with HMTV DTC, a subsidiary of Hemisphere Media Group, to acquire streaming platform Pantaya. “The acquisition of Pantaya, which includes renowned content titles such as ‘Señorita 89’ and ‘A La Mala’, is an exciting opportunity to build upon our strategic growth plan as we continue to redefine the global streaming landscape,” said TelevisaUnivision President and Chief Transformation Officer Pierluigi Gazzolo.
Global AVOD revenues from series and features will jump from $33 billion to $70 billion this year, according to a forecast from Digital TV Research. The US will remain the dominant AVOD market, with global share expected to rise from 39% to 46% by 2027.
UPFRONT UPDATES & CALENDAR
Estrella Media announced over 600 hours of new primetime content on tap for its linear and digital platforms, in addition to the company’s news programs, returning series, and acquired programming. The expanded content hours include the series that are part of the newly announced TV Azteca co-production and distribution agreement, and the company’s co-production agreement with Endemol Shine Boomdog and Fremantle Media. A new free ad-supported linear movie channel, Cine Estrella TV, is launching later this year.
On the streaming front, the company touted its success since launching its first FAST channels18 months ago – currently, the company has an average monthly total reach of more than 4 billion minutes viewed across its entire multiplatform media portfolio including its digital FAST, AVOD, and streaming audio platforms. For linear, the company announced that over 25% of the company’s viewers are exclusive to EstrellaTV, delivering an unduplicated reach for its marketing partners.
“Estrella Media is on track to have two of its most successful and innovative years in 2022 and 2023,” said CEO Peter Markham. “We are expanding our content offerings with production partners, growing our audience through our FAST, AVOD, and streaming platforms, and distributing our content to our audience where, when, and how they choose to consume media.”
