Good morning. It’s Tuesday, April 29, 2014, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
BuzzFeed made sure to show just how profitable and shareable "cute" and "LOL" are at its NewFront. Kicking off the presentation at the SVA Theater in New York with the viral hit "Sad Cat Diary," EVP of Video Ze Frank talked about "using data and analytics to help make our content makers get better… we’re trying to uncover the landscape of new intentions around social media and applying it to disciplines such as documentaries, scripted, and narrative [content]." With 300+ videos with over 1 million views each, 1.1B+ total YouTube views and 50 percent of views on mobile (YouTube Analytics), this team knows what it’s doing. To prove the point, Video GM and VP Agency Strategy Jonathan Perelman chatted with ad partners from Clean & Clear, Nestle Purina, and GE who’ve all had BuzzFeed create viral content for them.
Microsoft unveiled its soon-to-debut slate at its NewFront event at New York’s Moynihan Station with performances from Lake Street Dive and Chris Robinson to showcase the Bonnaroo music festival in June that will live stream on the console. XBox Entertainment Studios’ Nancy Tellem (President) and Jordan Levin (EVP) introduced a raft of new programming. Quoting Charles Mingus, Tellem said she wants to "make the complicated simple" and integrate technology into storytelling. Toward that end, shows include:
- Greenlit projects: Halo, the television series directed and produced by Steven Spielberg, FIFA World Cup show Every Street United, live-streams of performances at Bonnaroo, Signal to Noise tech documentary series with the first called Atari: Game Over, comedy sci-fi series Humans.
- Projects in development: Scripted role-playing series Deadlands, live-action animated series from Robot Chicken creators called Extraordinary Believers, reality series called Fearless, a detective thriller called Gun Machine, comedy variety show Untilted JASH Comedy/Variety Half Hour and live action series based on a graphic novel titled Winterworld. Also on tap is an interactive drama called Possibilia, an interactive film from the sensitive directing duo DANIELS in which viewers help steer the story.
CEO Marissa Mayer opened Yahoo’s NewFront event last night at Lincoln Center, touting the four biggest areas the company is expanding on: mobile, social, native and video. New offerings include:
- Yahoo Originals on Yahoo Screen: From Michael Tollin (Smallville, Coach Carter) comes the newest NBA team in Last Vegas, the Sin City Saints, in a comedy reality series. Paul Feig (director of Bridesmaids and The Heat) introduced a new comedy sci-fi series called Other Space.
- Yahoo Live: The site announced a partnership with LiveNation for a new concert series, with live and behind-the-scenes footage from musicians and events. "We produce over 20,000 shows a year, and we have spent the last three years talking to distributors, but they never had the same passion as Marissa Mayer did to make this live experience as high quality as we believed it should be," LiveNation’s CEO Mike Rapino said in a chat with Yahoo CMO Kathy Savitt. Kellogg’s is the main sponsor.
- Yahoo! News with Katie Couric: New series called World 3.0 and Now I Get It
- Yahoo Beauty: L’Oreal is a launch partner for this vertical.
- Yahoo Travel: The site’s newest vertical, led by Paula Froelich, debuted a digital travel mag during the NewFront, along with an original video series.
Yahoo Advertising: Head of the Americas Ned Brody Yahoo highlighted Yahoo’s SmartTV platform, along with Yahoo Splash Ads, Yahoo Full Page Video Login Ads and its new ComScore partnership. Kraft Foods‘ Jane Hilk provided a testimonial on the Planters’ Power of the Peanut video and display campaign with Yahoo, which resulted in a 4% in-store sales lift.
Multimedia production company Ketchum Labs and horror channel BlackBoxTV have formed a partnership that will see the creation and distribution of a hybrid-reality series, "Fight of the Living Dead" that will feature six YouTube stars dealing with a "highly simulated Zombie Apocalypse," and a full-length film, "Villisca," which is centered around the "paranormal repercussions of what many consider to be the most horrifying unsolved murders in the United States."
Several Hollywood film studios are working with Tencent, an Internet giant in China, to stream movies that are still being shown in American theaters in order to beat the booming video-piracy industry there. The Financial Times reports that Tencent’s Hollywood VIP service, which Warner Bros. has a minority stake in, currently shows older films on a subscription basis and "makes new titles available to rent online for as little as $1." The FT notes that American films could be streamed in China just two weeks after being released on movie screens in the States.
Chelsea Handler‘s contract with NBCUniversal’s E! is up at year’s end and she will be leaving the network. According to the New York Post, Handler is close to signing a deal with Netflix to distribute her next show. Handler, of course, got a lot of press recently when she went on Howard Stern’s show and spoke poorly of her current employer: "They don’t know what they’re doing [at E!]," she said. "They have no ideas. It’s a failure."
According to a report from TorrentFreak, Hulu is starting to block VPN services from accessing its content. Hulu reportedly has a long list of IP addresses used by VPN services and is not allowing anyone with those addresses to get to its content. TorrentFreak notes, however, that there are still ways around Hulu’s attempt to stop unauthorized viewing.
Acorn TV. which specializes in streaming British TV to North Americans, has got its Mother’s Day plans ironed out. The site has picked out four films for its first Mother’s Day Movie Marathon and will begin streaming them next Monday. The movies include "Emma," starring Kate Beckinsale; "Jane Eyre," with Samantha Morton and Ciaran Hinds: "The Woman in White," starring Tara Fitzgerald and Andrew Lincoln; and "Lorna Doone," with Clive Owen and Polly Walker.

Marketing software company Undertone has introduced a new platform that combines Media Rating Council-approved metrics from comScore, Moat, Integral Ad Science, and DoubleVerify that will make viewability metrics easier to quantify. It comes on the heels of the MRC "recently lift(ing) its 18-month-old advisory against selling digital ads based on whether they are measurably viewed by consumers," Adweek reports. This could lead to "a surge in the number of online promotions sold on viewability metrics." However, it may also bring difficulties for some publishers with one source telling Adweek "the technology being used to solve this problem is not ready for prime time."
Facebook is hosting, F8, its first major event for app developers since 2011 this week in San Francisco. According to Bloomberg, the social-network giant is looking to convince app developers to use its tools and design their products for its space. Facebook plans to show off software it has developed "that makes it easier to build apps for mobile phones, as well as tools that help programmers sell those wares to the social network’s 1.28 billion users," Bloomberg reports. Facebook’s main offering to developers will be Parse, a company Facebook purchased a year ago.
Instead of controlling what happens in your Street Fighter video game, fans will now have the chance to watch the action unfold without needing to worry about what to attack next. A new fan-made, Kickstarter-funded live-action web series, Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist, will debut in May on Machinima.
Here TV, the nation’s only gay television network, has launched a new mobile-compatible website that beefed-up info on all of the channel’s content as well as the first two episodes of its new sitcom, "From Here on OUT."
Social-TV startup Screen-Bridge is having a big spring. Not only will the company’s founder, Melanie Witkower, graduate from Syracuse University, but the company has won the $20,000 grand prize at the Panasci Business Plan Competition and named its first COO, Adam Reynolds.
Rovi announced two new launches Monday: Rovi Personalized Discovery Solutions and a new Rovi Cloud Platform. Discovery Solutions offers new search capabilities that can be tailored to individual viewers and is a direct result of Rovi’s purchase of Veveo. The Cloud Platform also helps create "entertainment personalization and monetization," according to the company.
George Giatzis has joined JamLoop as SVP Sales. He was previously VP Sales with Al Jazeera America.
Bidtellect has appointed three new members of its executive team. Michael Traylor is now senior vice president of business affairs and corporate development for the company. He was previously the chief business development officer at Professional Interactive Entertainment. Annie Turkel has been named regional vice president of sales, western region, by Bidtellect after leaving Machinima, where she was the west coast vice president of non-endemic sales. Andrew Hurlick is now the regional vice president of sales, eastern region, for Bidtellect. He has left Collective, where he managed New York sales.
