04.29.14

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, April 29, 2014, and this is your first early morning briefing.

TODAY’S TOP NEWS

Ross Lynch is one busy guy. Not only is Disney Channel renewing Austin & Ally for a fourth season, but the network just announced production of sequel Teen Beach Movie 2. A&A ranked as 2013’s No. 1 series among Tweens and the No. 2 series among K2-11 and K6-11. Production on Teen Beach Movie 2 begins in July, reuniting the cast of Lynch, Maia Mitchell, Grace Phipps, Garrett Clayton and John DeLuca. The movie will premiere in 2015 on Disney Channel. Lynch also fronts sibling-band R5, which is currently touring and dropped by to perform a song at the RDMAs.

Hope to see you June 11 in NY for the third annual Cynopsis Kids !magination Awards. Our industry peers will be awarded in a host of programming and marketing categories. We’ll begin revealing our Animation Innovators next week, and we’ll also be honoring a fabulous group of Kids People at the breakfast event. Need more reason to come? Inside Edition’s Megan Alexander is back to emcee. Check out Cynopsis.com for more details.

MORE KIDS NEWS

More monkey business is headed to Nick Jr. The network picked up a second season of Saban Brands’ Julius Jr., inspired by the characters of Paul Frank. Throughout the month of May, Nick Jr. will premiere new eps, beginning Saturday, May 3, at 1p. Julius Jr. regularly airs weekdays at 5p and Sundays at 10a. Additionally, the show’s themes will be brought to life beyond the screen through a new toy line with Fisher-Price, global master toy licensee for the brand. The line will include playsets and plush assortments, and will begin to hit Toys R Us shelves starting mid-June with the full rollout at key retailers to follow in fall 2014.

I’ve got chills, they’re multiplying… Fox jumped on to the live musical stage yesterday, announcing plans for a Grease Live production that will premiere next year. Produced by Paramount TV, the Grease production is expected to clock in at three hours. NBC scored big with The Sound of Music Live, which drew a huge 5.6 rating, 18-49, and 22 million viewers when it premiered in December. Next up for NBC is a live version of Peter Pan, earmarked for this December.

PROGRAMMING PICKS

International series Teenage Fairytale Dropouts makes its US debut on the Hub Network on Saturday, May 31, at 9a ET/6a PT. The newly acquired series revolves around three best buds with auspicious backgrounds–Jeremiah, son of the giant in Jack and the Beanstalk, Trafalgar, the nephew of Merlin the Wizard, and Fury, the daughter of the Tooth Fairy-who struggle to have their own identities despite their fairy tale origins. Hub acquired 13 half-hour eps of the first season, created and produced by Anima Estudios and co-produced with SLR Productions, Home Plate Entertainment and Telegael. The series is distributed by 9 Story Entertainment.

Nickelodeon is bringing together four classic TV moms–Happy Days’ Marion Ross, The Brady Bunch’s Florence Henderson, Family Ties’ Meredith Baxter, and Sister, Sister’s Jackee-for a special Mother’s Day ep of Nick at Nite’s Instant Mom, Thursday, May 8 at 8p. The Cosby Show’s Tempestt Bledsoe also joins Tia Mowry-Hardrict and the guest cast of "Not Your Mother’s Day."

For everyone wondering what Jay Leno’s decided to do now that his late-night gig is up… He’s looking into his crystal ball. Leno and Whoopi Goldberg have joined the voice cast of Disney’s modern dwarf sendup The 7D. The series will premiere Monday, July 7, at 10a on Disney XD, and will debut on Disney Channel and Disney Junior later this year. Leno will voice Crystal Ball, and Goldberg will voice Magic Mirror. They join Kelly Osbourne, who voices comically evil villain Hildy Gloom.

Laurie Berkner is set to appear on Sprout‘s Sunny Side Up Show on Wednesday morning. Kids can catch Berkner anytime in Sprout Online’s Sing It With Laurie feature.

RDMAs REDUX

CynKids had a ball at the Radio Disney Music Awards Saturday, chatting it up with some of Disney’s brightest stars on the red carpet and enjoying a show packed with music, selfies and fan love. Here are a few snippets:
Jason Ritter (Disney Channel’s Gravity Falls): "I grew up always loving animation. My parents [that would be late actor John Ritter and actress Nancy Morgan] took me to animation festivals all the time and I loved how you could just walk into all these different worlds." Does he have a lot in common with his Gravity Falls character Dipper? "Dipper is me. It wasn’t really planned this way, but actually every one of my nervous habits, he does. He can be a little awkward. He has some trouble with the ladies." Somehow, we doubt that last part is true for Ritter.

Dove Cameron (Disney Channel’s Liv and Maddie) on playing twins: "It was definitely more daunting at first than it is now. When they approached me with the offer, it started as just playing one role on the show. Then they said, Do you want to do two, and I was like, Haha. But it has definitely gotten much easier."

Kelly Berglund (Disney XD’s Lab Rats) about life on the set: "I get pranked all the time by the guys on the set. You never know what’s coming." Favorite Disney princess? "Ariel, I always wanted to be a mermaid." Really, who doesn’t?

Cameron Boyce (Disney Channel’s Jessie) on his role in the upcoming Disney Channel movie Descendants: "I play Cruella de Ville’s son. I grow up thinking dogs are viscious killers, and then one day I meet a dog and we become friends. It’s a pretty sweet story." Boyce’s favorite Disney villain? "Of course there are the evil queens, but I have to go with Jafar. He’s sneaky, but a pretty cool guy."

DIGITAL UPDATE

Lots of digital Disney fodder to support upcoming series The 7D. In June Disney Publishing Worldwide will release The 7D Mine Train app. On the July 7 TV premiere day, Disney Photo Finish app for iOS will introduce two new 7D-themed packs, "Starring Role" and stickers, which will allow users to customize their personal photos with 7D-themed artwork, specialty frames and filters to become one of the 7D in Jollywood.

GAMES & APPS

The Jim Henson Company is stacking the Doozers launch on Hulu Kids with some transmedia support. New app Doozer Creek, available for iPhone and iTouch, lets preschoolers place characters, vehicles, buildings and other elements from Doozer Creek on a blank playmat and then watch the world come to life. Doozers, created by Henson and DHX Media, follows a group of best buds who play together and share a love of inventing.

Kudos to: RT Harris, WideOrbit, Detroit; Jeff Grant, Turner, Atlanta; John May, Cartoon Network, Atlanta; Tom Potter, Radio Disney, NY; Jeremy St. Onge, Family Channel, Toronto; Joe Swaney, Cartoon Network, Atlanta; Pat Brady, CESD, LA.

Today’s Trivia Question: What kind of animal was Drooper of the Banana Splits? (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone.)
