Good morning. It’s Tuesday April 28, 2015, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Start your engines… it’s NewFront season. Yesterday’s buffet included Buzzfeed and The New York Times. Here’s what you need to know:
BuzzFeed is profitable, company execs said, and has raised nearly $50 million to date. Its presentation focused on the dynamics of shareable video content. Among revelations: BuzzFeed has generated 1.08 billion video views since September 2012; CEO Jonah Peretti noted the company had no video business 18 months ago, “so this is coming out of nowhere.” Also noteworthy, BuzzFeed.com accounts for only 15 percent of video views; and just 20 percent of total views of BuzzFeed content come from YouTube subscribers, execs said.
Virtual reality content is headed to The New York Times’ cache of video programming. At the Times NewFront, execs debuted its inaugural VR film, Walking the City, produced in conjunction with VRSE. The five-minute short puts viewers directly in the mix as editors and creatives assemble the latest NYT Magazine cover. "We think the journalistic potential of this emerging technology is huge," Times Magazine editor Jake Silverstein said. The Times will also roll out video series on topics ranging from family-run businesses to select recent Detroit high school grads; plus an animated financial literacy series linked to its DealBook website. Deloitte, Google and Microsoft are among series sponsors.

ESPN filed a lawsuit in state Supreme Court in New York against Verizon claiming Verizon’s “skinny” TV package, Custom TV, is in “breach of contract” and asking the judge to prevent the pay TV provider from offering the new package. "ESPN is at the forefront of embracing innovative ways to deliver high-quality content and value to consumers on multiple platforms, but that must be done in compliance with our agreements. We simply ask that Verizon abide by the terms of our contracts,” the sports programmer said in a statement. Verizon issued a statement, too, saying it is within its rights to offer the skinny bundle. "Consumers have spoken loud and clear that they want choice, and the industry should be focused on giving consumers what they want," Verizon said.
NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS
In time for the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs and Triple Crown, NBC Sports Digital is making NBC Sports Live Extra available on Apple TV beginning this week. Apple TV users who are authenticated TV Everywhere cable, satellite or telco customers can access Live Extra’s streams of 3,000-plus live events including all live sports content televised by NBC, NBCSN and Golf Channel, including the Summer and Winter Olympics; Sunday Night Football and NBC’s NFL pre-season and post-season coverage; NHL regular-season games and the PGA Tour.
Funnymen Keith Quinn and Jonathan Stern, in collaboration with Fox, are ready to roll out the laughs via their comedy development venture and Fullscreen is already on board with an eight-episode order for half-hour series Filthy Sexy Teen$. The comedy is about two wealthy teen siblings, thought to be lost at sea, who return home and attempt to re-climb the high school social ladder. It was created by Curtis Gwinn (NTSF:SD:SUV::, The Walking Dead), Paul Scheer (Fresh Off The Boat, The League) and Stern. Also in the pipeline with an eye to digital distribution are Drive Share, which follows a group of drivers as they shuttle strangers, and their problems, around town; music industry mayhem series Criminal Records; and Grand Marquee, starring Jerry Minor (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Black-ish) as an old-school rapper struggling both to regain relevancy in the hip-hop world and to maintain a relationship with his son–as told through the lens of a Danish news program.
Relativity Digital Studios is unleashing a digital movie musical starring some notables from YouTube, Vine and other digital realms alongside traditional young talent. Debuting in August, Summer Forever tracks three lifelong friends who vow to make their last weekend of summer, before heading off to college, the most epic ever. Among the cast: Megan Nicole, who’s original song Summer Forever inspired the film; Alyson Stoner of the Step Up film series; Anna Grace Barlow of Young & Hungry, Faking It and Scream Queens; and Stephen Colletti (One Tree Hill, MTV’s Laguna Beach).
Acorn TV, (www.Acorn.TV) the British TV-focused streaming service in North America, is adding to its slate of U.S. content premieres. Next Monday, May 4, Acorn TV premieres New Zealand detective drama The Brokenwood Mysteries. Coming June 1 is new crime drama Harry, starring Oscar Kightley and Sam Neill (Jurassic Park, Peaky Blinders).

blinkx plc unified its brand advertising trade entities under a single brand RhythmOne in a move to aid the implementation and measurement of integrated, cross-screen campaigns across its footprint. RhythmOne advertisers will be able to reach an expanded target audience through a single access point, publisher partners can benefit from higher fill rates and pricing, and content providers get an expanded distribution and monetization platform, according to company execs. In the programmatic arena, RhythmOne includes the introduction of RhythmGuard, a proprietary filtering technology that eliminates suspicious, underperforming or fraudulent traffic before it enters the advertiser marketplace.

Verve Mobile appointed its first chief business development officer, Brad Herman, which follows the appointment last week of Nada Stirratt as CEO. Herman was most recently video ad platform Videology’s chief media officer.
Yesterday at its Newfront The New York Times gave advertisers a glimpse of its plans to amp up virtual reality video.
