MTV’s Scream is undergoing a creative revamp ahead of its third season premiere. The series is getting a whole new cast as well as a new showrunner/EP, Brett Matthews (The Vampire Diaries, Supernatural). Also signing as executive producers are Queen Latifah, Shakim Conpere and Yaneley Arty.
Saturday Night Live is heading to China. NBCUniversal and Youku, a unit of Alibaba Digital Media & Entertainment Group, will produce a localized version of the show. Over the last few years, 10 international versions of SNL have been licensed across the world, most recently France, the Middle East and Finland.
In other SNL news, the show resumes Season 42 on May 6 with host Chris Pine and musical guest LCD Soundsystem, followed by host Melissa McCarthy and musical guest HAIM on May 13. Katy Perry returns to the show for a third time as musical guest, joining host Dwayne Johnson for the May 20 season finale
Hailee Steinfeld, Kelsea Ballerini and Sofia Carson will perform a medley to celebrate Britney Spears as she’s honored with the Icon Award at the 2017 Radio Disney Music Awards. Spears is the first-ever recipient of the RDMA Icon Award which recognizes an artist whose career transcends popular culture. Disney Channel Presents the 2017 Radio Disney Music Awards airs Sunday, April 30 at 7p on multiple Disney-branded platforms.
David Goldhill is leaving his post as CEO of GSN after 10 years. Goldhill took the helm of GSN in August 2007, succeeding Rich Cronin. A search is currently underway for his replacement. In a memo, Goldhill noted that he would be working with shareholders “to identify new leadership for both our television and games businesses, and will be fully engaged in managing both businesses until new executives are in place.”
ESPN is expected to part ways with some 100 employees, as the sports network places more focus on its revamped SportsCenter lineup and digital content associated with that show. “Our content strategy – primarily illustrated in recent months by melding distinct, personality-driven SportsCenter TV editions and digital-only efforts with our biggest sub-brand – still needs to go further, faster…and as always, must be efficient and nimble,” said ESPN president John Skipper in a memo sent to employees.”

Mindy Kaling optioned the rights to Who Thought This Was a Good Idea?: And Other Questions You Should Have Answers to When You Work in the White House, the bestselling memoir by former Alyssa Mastromonaco, Barack Obama White House deputy chief of staff for operations. The book will be adapted as a TV series with Kaling and 3 Arts Entertainment producing.
Charter Communications struck a deal with AMC Networks calling for the programmer’s studio unit to produce exclusive shows for the cable operator’s Spectrum platform. The first shows co-produced and co-funded through the deal are expected to premiere on Charter Spectrum in 2018. Under the agreement, Charter will have an exclusive initial window in the U.S., while AMC Studios will retain subsequent rights, including the right to distribute the content internationally.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES
Season 2 of Breakthrough bows Tuesday, May 2 at 10p on National Geographic. Series shines a light on the world’s leading scientists and how their innovations and advancements will change our lives in the immediate future and beyond.
Jon Glaser ’s original series Neon Joe, Werewolf Hunter premieres its sophomore season on Monday, May 22, with new episodes of the mini-series airing consecutively each night of the week, starting at 12a on Adult Swim.
Power returns to Starz on Sunday, June 25 at 9p. The drama follows James “Ghost” St. Patrick (Omari Hardwick), a drug kingpin living a double life.
NAB NOTES
The convergence between linear and digital video got some attention at the Ooyala and Beet.tv breakfast. “What we are working toward,” said Fox Networks Group’s Noah Levine, advertising data & technology solutions SVP, “are multiple ways to solve for unduplicated reach across platforms, rather than a single currency.”
Also under discussion at the event: the best way for brands to work with Snapchat influencers. Finding the right ambassador, noted Adobe’s Jayson Oertel, is perhaps the most important decision a brand can make. “It should be labored over,” said Ortel. And when it comes to Snapchat, all agreed, engagement is more important than impressions.
SMT , provider of data delivery, graphics solutions and tech support for sports and entertainment events, is partnering with Brainstorm Multimedia, SkyCam and The Switch for daily live augmented reality demonstrations at NAB. The presentations show how talent can be virtually inserted from a remote, live green-screen environment to a separate live location using SMT’s CameraTracker, Brainstorm’s virtual set and SkyCam’s WildCat aerial platform. What’s been the reaction so far? “The networks have been extremely excited to learn about the direction we are taking and the opportunities this new technology creates,” Stephen Wharton, chief technical officer, SkyCam, tells Cynopsis.

Comcast Technology Solutions shared its Linear Rights Metadata Management product, aimed at simplifying the accurate delivery and representation of content across mobile screens and live broadcasts.

LA 92 airs Sunday, April 30 at 9p on National Geographic, 25 years after the verdict in the Rodney King trial sparked several days of protests, violence and looting in Los Angeles. The documentary film immerses viewers in that tumultuous period through rarely seen archival footage.

DIGITAL DOINGS
Amazon launches The Tick on Friday, August 25. The superhero comedy focuses on an underdog accountant with zero powers who comes to realize his city is owned by a global super villain long-thought dead.
AT&T AUDIENCE Network premieres original series Fear{less} with Tim Ferriss on Tuesday, May 30 at 8p. Executive produced by Vince Vaughn’s Wild West Production, it features Ferriss interviewing guests about how they’ve overcome their fears, dealt with hardships and ultimately succeeded.

MTV International is set to launch Clickbait. The series takes viewers down an internet rabbit hole of music-inspired viral video content.
Endemol Shine Group and JTBC in Korea struck a co-development deal to create, produce and distribute formats for the international market. JTBC will air the first program created under the pact in a primetime slot later this year.
Discovery Networks Asia Pacific announced two new partnerships across Asia: a content deal with VS Media to launch short-form digital video content brand called TAN BA and a commercial deal with TABILABO to launch first premium video advertising solution in Japan across digital and linear platforms.
Dubai-based indie distributor Front Row Filmed Entertainment inked a pact with the SVOD service iflix, for Egyptian sitcom Tough Luck. iflix boards as co-producer for the series with Front Row, KNCC and Shadows Communications and will also take exclusive SVOD rights for the show in the Middle East and North Africa, South East Asia, Sub Saharan Africa, Central America, Asia Pacific and Commonwealth of Independent States.
