NBCUniversal has joined Disney/ESPN and 21st Century Fox in rejecting Verizon FiOS’s contention that it can offer skinny bundles, consisting of a basic package supplemented by two genre packages for $54.99/month, under its existing network deals. “Verizon’s announced ‘Custom TV’ package does not comply with our existing agreement,” said NBCU. Disney informed Verizon it won’t run ads for the Custom TV service, a stand Verizon labeled “anti-competitive.”
One day after the companies met with government officials over Comcast’s planned takeover of Time Warner Cable, Comcast decided to walk away from the deal, reported Bloomberg on Thursday. Regulators feared the $45.2 billion merger wasn’t in the best interest of consumers.
Ready for primetime: As the countdown continues to David Letterman’s last night as Late Show host on May 20, CBS will honor his 33-year career with a retrospective of interviews, top ten lists and stupid pet tricks in David Letterman: A Life on Television. Don’t mess with Dr. Oz. The cardiothoracic surgeon/talk show host struck back at a small group of doctors at New York Presbyterian/Columbia University who requested that his faculty position be revoked, for promoting “quack treatments and cures in the interest of financial gain.” In an opinion piece in Time, Oz wrote, “I started my show to give TV audiences advice on how to find a good life, not practice medicine on air…I don’t expect all my colleagues to understand this marriage between conventional medicine and the broader definition of wellness that the show pursues.” But he said that while he respects the criticism of colleagues, among his attackers are a doctor found guilty of medical fraud and several linked to the tobacco industry.

Exclusive: May is “Movie Music Month” at Sony Movie Channel, featuring classic documentaries, biopics and concert films. What’s the deal with the music theme? “Many of our viewers grew up idolizing the classic heroes of rock n’roll,” Jeff Meier, SMC’s senior vice president of programming, tells Cynopsis. “Our 3rd Annual Music Movie Month has grown to the point where we areoffering premieres of critically acclaimed rock docs, Searching for Sugar Man and Paul Williams: Still Alive.” Sugar Man kicks things off Sunday, May 3 at 7p; the net will also feature a music-themed two-pack every Tuesday.

The Cabletelevision Advertising Bureau went for the funny to create a video warning advertisers and agencies about the extent of click fraud, featuring a man’s shocking realization that “he is just one of millions of bots operating out of server farms, generating at least 30 million fraudulent online views per day.” Fake newscast is here.
FYI’s first birthday isn’t until July, but the newcomer has elbowed its way into the cable fray with shows like Married at First Sight and Tiny House Nation.
