In the “that was easy” department, Spike TV renewed buzzy hit Lip Sync Battle, its most-watched original series ever with an average 3 million viewers. “Lip Sync Battle is a television and viral rock star for Spike,” said net president Kevin Kay of cable’s number one rated series in its timeslot among A18-49. Twenty new episodes debut in 2016.


Oscar winner J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) is set to star in upcoming Starz drama Counterpart. The espionage thriller was created and written by Justin Marks (The Jungle Book).

Dancing With the Stars could be losing one of its most popular dancers for the duration of the season. E! reports that Derek Hough broke a toe, sprained his ankle and suffered ligament damage while rehearsing Monday night. His partner, Nastia Liukin, is currently rehearsing with troupe member Sasha Farber.

USA pulled the plug on Sirens after two seasons. The series, produced by Denis Leary and Bob Fisher, was the cable network’s foray into scripted half-hour comedy.

Imagine having teeth so damaged it hampers leading a normal life? Lifetime makeover series Smile documents the emotional, psychological and physical journey of transformative dental procedures. Series debuts Thursday, May 28 at 10p.

NBC and iHeartMedia announced the full lineup for the 2015 iHeartRadio Country Festival. This year superstar group features Tim McGraw, Brad Paisley, Rascal Flatts, Darius Rucker, Little Big Town, Dierks Bentley, Brantley Gilbert, Justin Moore, The Band Perry, iHeartRadio’s On The Verge artist Sam Hunt and Tyler Farr. Two-hour event airs Wednesday, May 27 at 9p and video streams live on Yahoo Live.

Kim Kardashian executive produces HLN documentary Red Flag, premiering Tuesday, May 5 at 9p during “Mental Health Awareness Month.” The special focuses on mental illness among young adults and how to use the power of social media to help them.

FX Productions struck a two-year, overall production deal with Simon Rich, creator, showrunner and executive producer of FXX comedy Man Seeking Woman.
Leftfield Entertainment launched production company Riot Creative, to be led by Stephanie Angelides as president. Riot Creative will develop programming for television with increased focus on OTT and digital platforms.


Scripps Networks Interactive’s seven-city Upfront tour made a stop at NYC’s Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center, with announcements about new programming across the company’s six networks.
On the menu at Food Network and Cooking Channel are over 40 new series and and 15 specials. Highlights include Food’s Spring Baking Championship, premiering this month; American Diner Revival and Guilty Pleasures, launching in May, and Craziest Restaurants in America, arriving in June. Cooking welcomes Lorraine Pascal: How to Be a Better Cook in May, Junk Food Flip in June and Steak Out with Kix Brooks in July. “Entertaining and engaging are at the forefront of our 2015 development plans for both Food Network and Cooking Channel,” said Brooke Johnson, President Food Network & Cooking Channel. “Food Network will continue to build off the success of fan – favorites with more eventized and exciting stunts, including some sweet additions to the menu with new baking and holiday-themed programming. Cooking Channel is packing its lineup with even more passionate foodies that share recipes as well as glimpses into their lives, while both networks will continue to push the boundaries of food exploration.”
 HGTV finished 2014 as its highest rated year ever, and finished 1Q25 with its highest P25-54 ever. In the programming pipeline are 10 new series, with many featuring proven stars for the net like Scott brothers Jonathan and Drew (Brother vs. Brother), cousins John Colaneri and Anthony Carrino (America’s Most Desperate Kitchens) and Tarek and Christina El Moussa (Flip or Flop Follow-Up). “We’ve systematically built the HGTV brand by bringing in and developing our star experts who are knowledgeable, relatable and fun,” said Kathleen Finch, President of HGTV, DIY and Great American Country. “We’re delivering top 10 ratings every single night of the week, so our programming, scheduling and marketing strategies are working.”
DIY is coming out swinging after achieving its highest-rated and most-watched year ever among P25-54, with over 400 hours of original programming with 16 new series including I Pity the Tool, starring Mr. T, James Belushi in Building Belushi and Garage Gold spinoff Attic Gold. “With a strong lineup of returning series, powerhouse expert talent and some surprising celebrities on the horizon, we pity the fool who doubts that DIY Network will perform strongly in 2015,” said Finch. As for Great American Country, whose ratings hit a six-year high, “We are very focused on building our awareness and sustaining our growth, said Allison Page, general manager, GAC, HGTV and DIY. “GAC just ended its most upscale quarter ever with a median income that is at an all-time high. Joining the lineup in April is Made From America, about a retro T-shirt entrepreneur who uses proceeds from his sales to help local businesses.
Travel Channels on a roll, with green lights for seven new series and a pilot. Joining the lineup are 50/50, featuring “a spontaneous adventure with a twist”; Five Star Secrets; Rev Runs Around the World, starring Rev Run and his family; coming of age docu-series Boy to Man; Majestic America (wt) about national parks; airport-set Hello Goodbye and Follow Your Past. Pilot Relocated follows professionals and their families as they face moving. “Travel Channel is going everywhere – every state, every continent and nearly 100 countries – challenging ourselves to find new places, try new things we thought we’d never try, and connect with fascinating people,” said net President Shannon O’Neill. “The faces of our network – our hosts – are some of the most passionate and authentic travelers on the planet.”


American Heroes Channel (AHC) honors the 70th anniversary of World War II’s end with a five-day programming event showcasing the biggest battles of the war and stories of personal triumph against Nazi Germany and its allies. “Countdown to Victory” airs Tuesday, May 4 through Saturday, May 8, headlined by the premiere of Surrender: The Fall of the Reich on May 4 at 9p.
Univision celebrates the best in telenovelas and entertainment with the 33rd annual Premios TvyNovelas, airing Sunday, April 26 at 9:30p. The awards ceremony will feature performances by Alejandra Guzman, David Bisbal, Maite Perroni and Cristian Castro. Lili Estefan will receive this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
Azteca America launches new celebrity dance competition Baila si Puedes on Monday, April 27 at 7p. The show features 16 Latino celebrities, each paired with a professional dancer.
Animal Planet‘s Tanked delivers aquatic masterpieces to all-stars of stand-up and sports with all new episodes debuting Friday, May 29 at 10p. Howie Mandel, Jeff Dunham, Gabriel Iglesias, Marshawn Lynch and Dwight Howard are the fish fanatics who become proud owners of new aquariums.
CBS‘s The Talk salutes The 42nd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards with a special show dedicated to daytime television’s biggest night on Monday, April 27 at 2p. Netflix renewed superhero drama Daredevil. Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez will take over for Steven DeKnight as showrunners for the second season, bowing in 2016.
BBC Worldwide North America Sales & Co-productions and PBS announced that critically acclaimed drama Last Tango in Halifax is returning for a third season in the U.S. Six-part series premieres Sunday, June 28 at 8p on PBS.


20th Television announced a partnership with cross-platform mobile company WiOffer to deliver television advertisers second screen engagement experiences that would allow viewers to easily interact with brands to receive offers and info. “As the media landscape becomes more complex and innovation becomes paramount, both clients and agencies have had a very positive reaction to 20th bringing something new and measurable to our portfolio,” Michael Teicher, EVP, Media Sales, 20th Television, tells Cynopsis. What’s the response so far? “Adding to new data tools we’ve introduced this year, along with the WiO offering, our conversations with marketers have gone deeper than in the past.”


Griffin Dunne is joining the second season of WGN America drama Manhattan in a recurring role as a tenacious and self-destructive newspaper reporter.
Amelia Rose Blaire (True Blood) has been tapped for a recurring role in MTV‘s Scream. She’ll play the host of a popular podcast.
Haley Lu Richardson, last seen as Tess on Ravenswood, is heading to another ABC Family show. She’ll recur on upcoming drama Recovery Road as Ellie, the smart ambitious “friend” of main character Maddie (Jessica Sula).

The season 4 premiere of VH1‘s Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta at 8p on Monday, April 20 delivered a 2.5 rating among adults 18-49 (Live+SD) and over 3.5 million total viewers, the highest ever season debut for the series. The season premiere was the number one cable telecast for the day among W18-49 and W18-34.
Tuesday A18-49 Analysis: NBC led with the most A18-49 viewers Tuesday with 1.7/5, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. NBC’s The Voice topped 8p with 2.6/9. CW’s Flash and ABC combo of Fresh Off the Boat and Repeat After Me tied for second with 1.3/4. ABC’s Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. took over the top spot at 9pm with 1.6/5, followed by NBC’s Undateable and One Big Happy which averaged 1.3/4. At 10p, NBC’s Chicago Fire topped with 1.6/5; Telemundo’s El Senor de los Cielos ranked number two with 1.4/4.
