CYNOPSISKIDS!
04.22.15

Good morning. It’s Wednesday April 22, 2015, and this is your first early morning briefing.

TODAY’S TOP NEWS

How does Zendaya feel about switching up her starring role in K.C. Undercover for the night to host the Radio Disney Music Awards this Saturday? "It’s a different energy, but I’m excited about it," she tells CynKids. "The RDMAs are a family event so there’s going to be a lot of young kids and every one of them has energy they’re bringing." Zendaya says fans can expect lots of wardrobe changes, though she hasn’t yet made final decisions on what she’ll be wearing.

In other RDMAs news… Jennifer Lopez will receive this year’s Hero Award in recognition of her philanthropic efforts. Shawn Mendes, Sheppard and Tori Kelly will perform, along with previously announced Nick Jonas, Becky G, R5, Sabrina Carpenter, Natalie La Rose and Fifth Harmony. Presenters include Kelly Osbourne, Carly Rae Jepsen, Laura Marano and Chelsea Kane. Additionally, Columbia Records singer/songwriter Rachel Platten will perform her single Fight Song as the RDMA Heroes for Change award is presented to two Radio Disney listeners: Sloan Peterson of L.A., and Maryah Sullivan of Orlando, in recognition of their efforts to make a difference in their communities. A 90-minute televised special Disney Channel Presents the Radio Disney Music Awards and 30-minute preshow airs this Sunday, April 26, beginning 7:30p on Disney Channel.

BroadbandTV, the multi-channel network owned by European broadcast giant RTL Group, acquired the YoBoHo YouTube network for $10 million. YoBoHo operates HooplaKidz, which is the largest preschool and K-12 educational MCN on YT with 1.5 million subscribers. YoBoHo’s network of 8,000 vids snares more than three billion views on YT every year. BroadbandTV reels in 50 billion views per year, making it one of the top three non-music multi-channel networks. Other BBTV networks include gaming network TGN, hip-hop brand Opposition and female lifestyle net Kandesa.

PROGRAMMING PICKS

PRODUCTION NOTES

Sprout‘s Good Night Show prequel Nina’s World will boast some serious star power when it debuts in September. Legendary actress/singer Rita Moreno voices Abuelita, beloved grandmother to the title character, a 6-year-old Latina girl. Moreno shared her excitement with CynKids:
What drew her to the show
"I thought it was a wonderful time to do something like this. It’s very advanced and contemporary. It includes people of diverse nationalities, which I really love. And they aren’t just there, looking dark-skinned and turbaned. They’re there to be used as characters who inform."

Every kind of diversity…
"This show is aiming for something special. There’s also a little boy who is deaf in the show, who reads lips and signs. The only person I remember including all these [diverse characters] years ago is Mr. Rogers. This show encompasses everything, and more than anything else it helps children understand that when things seem to be dull and boring, you can always make some kind of adventure. And Abuelita is the conduit to those adventures."

The episode she’d like to see
"We haven’t done a show yet about bullying but I hope the writers will take that into consideration. It’s such a huge problem that’s grown over the past few years."

Most important lesson about children’s TV
"For one thing, don’t talk down to the children. That doesn’t exist in this show. You explain, you explore, you treat them like these wonderful active little brains who are here to sop up information."

DIGITAL UPDATE

John Stamos, aka Uncle Jesse, made it official on Jimmy Kimmel Live this week. Fuller House, the Full House reboot, is definitely in the works and headed to Netflix.

SVOD platform Kidoodle.TV is fattening its coffers with the acquisition of content from international locales including Argentina (Toobys), Cyprus (Qumi-Quimi), France (Jungle Bunch) and Singapore (Counting With Paula). Each series will be available through the commercial-free platform, which features parental controls, viewing time limits and curfews.

We recently reported that Genius Brands International will launch the Kid Genius channel on Comcast Xfinity On Demand in September. Andy Berman, GBI’s SVP, global distribution sales, gives us some details:
Content
"The core Kid Genius content initially will be ours–Secret Millionaires Club, Thomas Edison’s Secret Lab and of course Baby Genius. But we also have a major push to acquire third-party content from around the globe. We’re looking at almost everything as long as it fits that content with a purpose label. Anything from contemporary stuff to retro classics."

In-house production
"We have a lot in the pipeline–more animated series, and specials–and whenever we produce anything in the future they will be on Kid Genius. We expect to have new content out in 2016, 2017."

Distribution plans
"Initially this will put us in 20 million homes but we plan to expand to 50 million-60 million homes… If anything, we would transition to an SVOD model at some point, but we want to first establish ourselves as an advertiser-supported video on demand service."

AROUND THE INDUSTRY

Nothing says summer like the annual Cartoon NetworkAtlantis Paradise Island cross-promo. The network and Bahamas resort are back together again for a fifth consecutive year with branded family fun planned June 19-Aug. 22. Back by popular demand is the Adventure Time-themed obstacle course with 9,000 square feet of inflatable obstacles that turn Paradise Lagoon into Cartoon Network Lagoon. With Hasbro on as sponsor, the Nerf Super SoakerFlood Zone is a fantastically interactive inflatable maze located on the beach. There’ll be more big-screen screenings of Cartoon Net, themed content at the Atlantis Kids Adventure and kiosks located around the resort for souvenir shopping.

The Walt Disney Studios will co-produce and co-finance Steven Spielberg’s film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The BFG. Although he has produced for Disney, this marks the three-time Academy Award winner’s first time directing a Disney-branded movie. Spielberg will direct the film adaptation based on a script by Melissa Mathison, who last teamed with him on E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.

Kids book darling Junie B. Jones is getting a new look. Random House Books for Young Readers is rolling out a fresh cover look for the 28-book series by Barbara Park, as well as the interactive journal. The re-branded series launch will be supported by a campaign that will bring Junie B. and her bus driver, Mr. Woo, live and person to select schools in May.

APPS & GAMES

Nickelodeon’s new Nick Jr. Apple Watch App packs not only preschool content–including live streams of Nick Jr., on-demand eps and more than 100 short-form videos–but also controls so parents can manage screen time remotely. When the Apple Watch is used in tandem with the Nick Jr. app for iPhone, parents will be able to measure screen use via a timer, supervise activities and regulate volume settings. The watch functions are extensions of the user’s iPhone experience and can be accessed by tapping on the Nick Jr. icon on the watch. Additional features include the ability for parents to see at a glance what kids are watching in the app at any given moment. To date, Nick has launched more than 20 preschool apps.

Marvel and Walmart are jointly launching an exclusive mobile app–the Super Heroes Assemble app, free through the App Store or Google Play store beginning later this month. Through the app and timed to the theatrical release, Walmart customers will be able to interact with Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron signage throughout stores to unlock exclusive content such as 3D photo opps with characters. Other features will include access to behind-the-scenes footage, cast interviews and character pages.

Game developer Pixowl partnered with Jim Davis’ company Paws Inc. to develop Garfield: Survival of the Fattest, available in the App Store for iPhone, iPad, iPod touch. The character-driven game is set in the wilderness, where Garfield is forced to diet. Players need to help the fat cat get his favorite foods back while camping with Jon. Included are hundreds of quests, 30 food items to plant or craft with original recipes, exclusive scenes and mini games.

INTERNATIONAL

Corus Entertainment will be the official steward of Disney Channel in Canada when the network launches north of the border on Sept. 1 with a full slate of shows. The agreement also includes authenticated simultaneous streaming and ad-supported VOD rights for select programs airing on the channel. The multiyear agreement expands the relationship between Corus and the Disney/ABC Television Group that began in 2011, when Corus launched its millennial-targeted service ABC Spark, based on ABC Family in the United States.

Discovery Kids in Asia Pacific picked up an additional season of 9 Story Media Group‘s animated Wild Kratts. The network also renewed the first season of the series along with season one of Finding Stuff Out, both of which will air across Asia Pacific, and seasons one and two of Survive This (28 x 22′) which will air in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong. Wild Kratts premiered on PBS Kids in the U.S. in 2011.

MarVista Entertainment acquired Latin American rights to Nicktoons series Little Battlers eXperience. The company will introduce 52 half-hour episodes of the animated action series, which debuted in the U.S. in August 2014, throughout Latin America.
