Michael Strahan is leaving syndicated daytime talker LIVE With Kelly and Michael for a full-time position on ABC’s Good Morning America, where he has been appearing twice weekly. “Michael has been a stellar addition to the broadcast,” said ABC News president James Goldston in a note to staff.“Over the past two years on GMA, he’s proven to be a tireless and versatile broadcaster with an incredible ability to connect with people.” Strahan, a former football star who joined LIVE in 2012, starts his new role on GMA in September and will remain a co-host on NFL on FOX. “My time with LIVE with Kelly and Michael has been transformative, and my departure will be bittersweet,” said Strahan. “Kelly has been an unbelievable partner.”

With its contract with DISH Network set to expire tonight, Viacom warned the satellite TV provider’s customers that Viacom’s 18 networks could soon be dropped. “Viacom’s proposal to DISH to carry our channels is more than realistic and reasonable,” posted the media company. “As a long-standing partner, DISH has always paid among the lowest rates in the industry for Viacom Networks. …[DISH] has simply not engaged in a serious way to reach an agreement.” Responded DISH, “Viacom is asking hundreds of million of dollars in increases, despite the changing landscape.”

HBO and Discovery Communications have taken an equity stake in 3D graphics company OTOY, to develop original holographic content the companies anticipate will “deliver new entertainment experiences.” Count Jon Stewart, who has been working with OTOY on short-form content for HBO digital services, as a fan. “OTOY is unbelievable!” said the former Daily Show host. “It’s a limitless mind-blowing creative platform. My dream is to someday understand how they did it!!!”

PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT

Television production in LA was up 19.1 percent in 1Q16 versus 1Q15, according to FilmLA. “The very encouraging first quarter numbers from FilmLA demonstrate the impact of California’s expanded tax credit program,” said California Film Commission executive director Amy Lemisch. “They illustrate that the Film & Television Tax Credit Program 2.0 is working precisely as intended to attract and retain all types of productions, especially TV projects that create steady long-term jobs for cast and crew.” TV comedies increased on-location filming by over 80 percent, versus an increase of just over 3 percent for dramas, though much of the increase in shooting days were not attributed to tax credit projects.

NAB NOTES

ABC’s commitment to programming that reflects diversity is “greater than ever,” said Ben Sherwood, president of the Disney-ABC Television Group, at the NAB Show in Las Vegas. “We’re all-inclusive. In a divided nation, we speak to everyone, and our content needs to reflect that.” As for whether the television industry is in a golden age, Sherwood noted, “What is unusual about this moment is not about the talent that is making it but the technology that is used to tell a story and distribute it widely.”

Digital be damned – Ben Silverman, founder and chairman of Electus and former co-chairman of NBC Entertainment, insists, “There’s just nothing else that can deliver” like broadcast TV. Speaking at NAB, Silverman explained, “With broadcast, you may be taking a ton of risk going into it, but you can still potentially create something like The Office or The Biggest Loser, which has huge back-end revenue streams, not just the front-end, commercial upside. So I’m still very much bullish and eager to bring major pieces of content [to broadcast TV].” As for YouTube, “Young kids with cat videos are very comfortable doing that, but that’s not the kind of content I want to make.”

ADVERTISING & BRANDS

Ad blockers are a serious threat to the digital ad industry, according to a new global study by Accenture which found that 42 percent of consumers would pay to remove ads, and 69 percent of A18-24 respondents said they were aware of ad interruption technologies. Why so eager to skip ads? “Consumers are increasingly willing to pay for blockers because too many ads are poorly targeted. In today’s world of personalized content, being forced to watch an ad that has no relevance is a missed opportunity and feels increasingly intrusive on precious screen-time,” said Accenture’s Gavin Mann. “In fact, simple avoidance of content associated with heavy and repetitive irrelevant advertising will increase as consumer choice and awareness of choice increases.”

GLOBAL GOINGS ON

A funny thing happened on the way to Africa: MENA pay-TV net OSN inked a deal with Viacom International Media Networks for Comedy Central. That makes three VIMN nets in the region, which already airs MTV and Nickelodeon.

4K Media Inc secured a broadcasting agreement with MBC3 for the newest Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V series in the MENA region.

DIGITAL DOINGS

Netflix and Canadian net Showcase are partnering on sci-fi series Travelers, starring Eric McCormack (Will & Grace). Showcase will air the show in Canada, with Netflix holding exclusive rights everywhere else. The streaming service also ordered documentary series Captive, from Lightbox in association with Hypnotic.

OWN unveiled TVE app Watch OWN, giving authenticated viewers access to a live feed of OWN plus select on-demand programming. “The launch of Watch OWN is a meaningful step in the evolution of the network,” said Erik Logan, net president.“This is not only an extension of the OWN brand but a new avenue for opportunities in the viewer engagement and advertising spaces.”

Amazon Prime members will be able to subscribe to ad-free comedy streaming channel Seeso  directly through Amazon Video later this spring. Price is $3.99/month for content including over 20 exclusive original series, NBC late night programming including 40 years of SNL, British comedies and more.

The Daytime Emmys ceremony won’t be broadcast on TV, but it will be live-streamed on Parachute TV, offering fans a chance to interact with winners moments after they grab their trophies. Parachute TV, launched on Periscope last year, reaches over a million viewers.

The Detour is reaching an average 5.3 million viewers across TBS platforms through its first two episodes, including 1.5 million viewers and 848,000 A18-49 in Live+3 delivery. Those ratings make it cable’s top new comedy with young adults year to date.

The season four premiere of Telemundo’s La Voz Kids averaged 1.579 million total viewers and 721,00 among A18-49, ranking number one in its time period, regardless of language, in Miami.

Freshman finales: CBS’s Supergirl matched its A18-49-demo low with 1.3/4 for its season finale Monday, even with last week in Live+SD. The CW’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend ended its first season up one tenth, to .3/1, while Fox newcomer Lucifer was up two tenths, to 1.3/4.

The series premiere of CMT’s The Dude Perfect Show delivered nearly 2 million total viewers on Thursday, with back-to-back premiere episodes averaging .3 among A18-49, and ranked number two across cable in its timeslot among M12-17 with a 1.29 rating. It was the net’s highest-rated launch ever with teens.

Only three of the top ten syndicated talkers saw week-to-week ratings gains, as temperatures rose and PUT levels dropped the week ending April 10. The winners: LIVE With Kelly and (for now) Michael (up 3 percent to 3.0 in Live+SD), Ellen DeGeneres (up 14 percent to 2.4) and Wendy Williams (up 15 percent to 1.5). Among W25-54, LIVE was up 8 percent to 1.4, to tie talk leader Dr. Phil, down 7 percent in the demo.

After a three-year hiatus, the season seven premiere of Investigation Discovery’s Disappeared had its best launch ever in P2+ (1.054 million) and HH (886,000).

From April 11-17, Univision ranked as the number five broadcast network among both A18-34 and A18-49, and saw week-to-week growth (up 2 percent in total viewers, up 3 percent in A18-49 and up 5 percent in A18-34), out-delivering one or more of the English-language broadcast networks on six nights among A18-34.
