Kevin Spacey will host the 71st annual Tony Awards, to be telecast live by CBS on June 11 from Radio City Music Hall. This is Spacey’s first time hosting.
 
E! Entertainment extended its agreement with Ryan Seacrest to continue serving as host and executive producer of the network’s signature franchise Live from the Red Carpet. Seacrest joined E! in 2006 and has helped elevate the pop culture network’s position as a leader for live event coverage. He also continues to produce several unscripted series for E! via Ryan Seacrest Productions, including Keeping Up with the Kardashians, in partnership with Bunim-Murray Productions, as well as its spinoffs. During the 2017 awards season, E! delivered 165 million total engagements across platforms, +23% vs. 2016.
 
Nielsen dropped some facts at its press breakfast in NYC on Tuesday that have helped shape the new data and tools the measurement company offers. On the topic of emerging trends, Sara Erichson, EVP, client solutions and audience insights, pointed to significant viewership lifts past Live+7, explaining that while in the past, almost all delayed viewing took place within 7 days there is now double digit lift in days 8-35, and 67 million, or 56% of TV households have a connected device.
 
Nielsen’s Jessica Hogue, SVP, product leadership, shared Total Audience client applications, including a 67% lift for CBS‘s Big Bang Theory in Live+35 versus Live+SD. At sports net ESPN, out of home measurement is key, and Nielsen found OOH audiences have a different composition that in home, with 36% of OOH viewers female vs. 30% of in home viewers (12/26/16-2/26/17), and 31% of OOH viewers P18-34, versus 22% who watch in home. 
 
As for measurement of branded content, “It’s on the radar,” assured Kelly Abcarian, SVP, product leadership.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
 
TNT gave a pilot order to mystery drama pilot Deadlier Than the Male (working title), produced by Made Up Stories and Turner’s Studio T. Series, written by Harriet Warner (Call the Midwife), follows a trio of characters who each have a mysterious past.
 
More Kong is on the way. MarVista Entertainment and IM Global Television are developing, co-producing and co-finance a female-led, multicultural-cast contemporary tale of King Kong for series television. Based on DeVito ArtWorks’ Skull Island property and Merian C. Cooper’s King Kong, King Kong Skull Island is a comprehensive King Kong Universe exclusively endorsed by Kong’s creator. Jonathan Penner and Stacy Title (The Bye Bye Man) are writers/exec producers; Dannie Festa (Trolls) will executive produce.
 
FYI and Sur La Table are joining at the table to produce 10-ep culinary series Scraps. Show features Sur La Table chef Joel Gamoran traveling across the US creating meals in unexpected places and using, you guessed it, food waste and scraps. Set to premiere Sunday, May 21, the show is produced by Katie Couric via her Katie Couric Media and production partner RAIN, which developed Scraps’ collaborative digital format. Timothy Whitney and Brian Edelman executive-producer for RAIN; Gena McCarthy and Jordan Harman executive-produce for FYI.
 
A new season of Property Brothers at Home – Property Brothers at Home: Drew’s Honeymoon House – is under way at HGTV and will premiere in November 2017. The new season will follow real estate and home renovation superstars Drew and Jonathan Scott, and Drew’s fiancee Linda as they renovate the soon-to-be newlyweds’ first home together in LA.
 
Bravo ordered a second season of dark comedy Imposters. The series, about a con artist who is both beautiful and dangerous, hails from Universal Cable Productions.
 
Travel Channel’s history explorer Don Wildman will venture back into the field to unravel new tales in 13 upcoming single-topic special episodes of Mysteries at the Museum. Earlier this year, five special episodes of the series delivered more than 5.3 million total viewers. This new collection of field adventures is set to air later this year.
 
 
NEW & RETURNING SERIES
 
Comedy Central unveiled its 2017-18 development slate, which includes three series pick-ups and nine pilot orders. New pick-ups are scripted workplace comedy Corporate, a successor of sorts to Workaholics, which just ended its seven-season run on the network; stand-up and music hybrid variety series The New Negroes, based on the comedy show; and Reggie Watts-hosted game show Taskmaster, based on the UK format. Among the pilots, all working titles, are Alternatino, half-hour sketch show based on the Comedy Central digital series hosted and performed by Arturo Castro (Broad City); Home for the Weekend, a mockumentary-style half-hour created, executive-produced and hosted by comedian Neal Brennan that features Brennan and a celebrity guest as they take a weekend trip back to the guest’s hometown; and untitled projects from Awkwafina, written by Nora Lum and Teresa Hsiao, Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider, Franchesca Ramsey, Jak Knight, and South Side Project’s Bashir Salahuddin, Diallo Riddle and Sultan Salahuddin.
 
Biography Presents: Joyce Mitchell and the New York Prison Break, focused on the seamstress who helped two killers escape, premieres on Lifetime Monday, April 24 at 10p. 
 
Investigation Discovery will premiere new 10-part original newsmagazine The Real Story With Maria Elena Salinas on Monday, April 24 at 10p. Hosted by the Univision News anchor, the series will dig for the true stories behind national headline-making crimes in search of new evidence, unheard perspectives, and updates to the cases.
 
Revenge and action return to Telemundo with the return of La Querida del Centauro on Tuesday, May 2 at 10p. The sequel to the original production tells the story of the revenge of El Centauro, one of Mexico’s most notorious drug traffickers, after two years on the run.
 
A&E Network’s Emmy-winning original docuseries Born This Way will return for a third season with back-to-back hourlong episodes on Tuesday, May 16 beginning at 9p. Series follows seven young adults born with Down syndrome along with their family and friends in Southern California.
 
The season 3 premiere of 12 Monkeys on Syfy will come in a big package.The entire third season will air Friday, May 19 to Sunday, May 21 in Syfy’s first-ever, linear binge-a-thon from 8-11p each night.

AXS TV will celebrate Grammy-winning rock group Fleetwood Mac with the Sunday Night Rocks: Mac Attack marathon on Sunday, April 30 at 4:30p that spotlights classic appearances, performances and archive footage, kicking off with an episode of The Big Interview with Dan Rather and Lindsey Buckingham, and including Rock Legends: Fleetwood Mac.

CBC and Rabbit Square Productions announced casting for new family comedy series Crawford. The ensemble cast is led by Jill Hennessy (Shots Fired, Crossing Jordan), Kyle Mac (Miss Sloane, 21 Thunder), Daniel Davis Yang (Riverdale), Alice Moran (Sunnyside, Man Seeking Woman) and John Carroll Lynch (The Founder, American Horror Story).
 
 
GLOBAL GOINGS ON
 
Rive Gauche Television is representing two original series from AMC Networks International-UK: The Day I Should Have Died tells the stories of ordinary people faced with life-threatening circumstances through actual footage, re-enactments and witness interviews. Teens Who Kill showcase stories of extraordinary happenings that profile the most unlikely of murders. Both series premiered on CBS Reality.
 
 
DIGITAL DOINGS
 
Netflix’s Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life will compete in the Primetime Emmy Awards as a limited series, the Television Academy said yesterday. The show’s producers had submitted a petition regarding its placement; the new ruling puts the series revival in the pool with Fargo, American Horror Story and American Crime, among others.
 
Fusion Media Group unveiled its first full slate of podcasts, including offerings from Deadspin, Fusion, Lifehacker, Jezebel, Kotaku and The A.V. Club. Episodes are distributed through a partnership with Panoply and are currently available on iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, iHeartRadio, and Spotify among other platforms. The slate of podcasts are also featured in the NPR One app.
 
 
DISTRIBUTION & SYNDICATION
 
BET Networks licensed the off-network cable rights to ABC comedy black-ish. Via an agreement with the Disney/ABC Television Group, BET will air episodes of the series beginning in fall 2018. The show currently airs Wednesdays on ABC behind flagship Modern Family, and often tops its 9:30p time slot among A18-49.

RATINGS
 
Sunday’s series finale of Girls came close to the finale high the Lena Dunham HBO show saw during its first season. Girls drew 741,000 viewers, according to Nielsen, rising +45% in viewership over the finale low of the 2016 season 5 ender.
 
VH1 scored its best primetime rating for A18-49 Live+Same Day on any night since 2013 with the season 6 premieres of Basketball Wives and TI & Tiny: The Family Hustle, and the seventh week ep of Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta.
 
Investigation Discovery’s limited series Casey Anthony: An American Murder Mystery was the network’s best series debut ever on Live+3 viewing, delivering 3.603 million viewers P2+ for all three nights of the series (April 9-11). It was also the best delivery for an ID series among all other key demos, including HH (2.877 million), A25-54 (1.879 million) and A18-49 (1.622 million).
 
The Tuesday, April 4, season premiere of Fox drama Prison Break delivered the network its highest-rated Tuesday night with entertainment programming in a year and a half. In addition, the episode was the night’s No.1 scripted show, posting a +21% advantage over its nearest competitor.
 
In syndicated ratings, sparked by a headline-making interview with actress Mischa Barton, Dr Phil (3.3 Live+SD national Nielsen rating) jumped to a four-week high, widening his lead in the talk show race. Phil was the only talker to rise from last year, growing +6%. The only other shows in the category to resist the often severe annual declines were true crime series Crime Watch Daily (1.0, steady) and Jerry Springer (1.2).   
 
In access, the big game shows were in the minus column except for topper Family Feud (6.4, unchanged), which was the runner-up to overall syndication leader Judge Judy (6.7, steady).

FremantleMedia International promoted Michela Di Mondo to the role of SVP, Sales & Distribution for FremantleMedia International, Canada. Since joining FMI, Michela helped launch the Canadian office and brokered key deals in both the English and French languages. 
 
Josh Spector joined indie distributor Gravitas Ventures as director of acquisitions along with Zach Hamby, who has joined the distributor’s team as acquisitions manager. IN MEMORIAM
 
Writer Trish Vradenburg, whose TV credits include Family Ties and Designing Women, died April 17 at age 70. Vradenburg was co-founder of UsAgainstAlzheimer’s, formed after her mother died of the disease.
