American Idol champ and The Voice coach, Kelly Clarkson, who just appeared on the Academy of Country Music Awards, has a new gig: host of the 2018 Billboard Music Awards. NBC is airing the show this year for the first time. Ceremony takes place Saturday May 20 at 8p at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
 
PBS released a summer programming lineup that is going places. No Passport Required, bowing Tuesday, July 10, tours vibrant immigrant communities in American cities with chef Marcus Samuelsson. Kingdoms of the Sky, premiering Wednesday, July 11, explores climbing to the top of the Rocky Mountains, the Himalayas and the Andes. Human survival is pushed to the limit in Earth’s Natural Wonders, debuting Wednesday, July 1, while the remote Australian wilderness is explored in The Outback, bowing Wednesday, August 1. Audiences will explore streets, monuments and modern marvels in 10 That Changed America, premiering Tuesday, July 10, and journey into the depths of Mexico’s tropical rainforests in Wonders of Mexico, debuting Wednesday, August 1.
 
Telemundo revealed another batch of music stars set to perform at the 2018 Billboard Latin Music Awards. Onboard are Bad Bunny, new Latina millennial icon Becky G, Daddy Yankee, David Bisbal, De La Guetto, Farruko, Luis Fonsi, Natti Natasha, Reik, Sebastian Yatra, Victor Manuelle, Wisin and Yandel. Show airs live Thursday, April   26 at 7p.
 
The 2018 MTV VMAs are returning to New York City and will air Monday, August 20 from Radio City Music Hall. “New York City’s creative energy has always fueled those who live and work here. This is where music, film and art collide and where the Video Music Awards were born,” said NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio.  
 
The Alliance of Women in Media Foundation announced the winners of the 43rd annual Gracie Awards, taking place Tuesday, May 22 at the Four Seasons Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Los Angeles. CBS This Morning co-host Norah O’Donnell was honored in the On-Air Talent – News or News Magazine category, while CBS Sunday Morning’s profile on Billie Jean King reported by Lee Cowan was named a Grand Award winner in the Soft News Feature National TV category. 60 Minutes was honored with two Gracies. Dr. Jonathan La Pook’s report “USA Gymnastics” nabbed News Feature Series in the National TV category, and Oprah Winfrey’s “Divided” earned the Interview Feature award in the National TV category.
 
Leonardo DiCaprio will present friend and frequent collaborator Martin Scorsese with the inaugural Robert Osborne Award, for his decades-long commitment to the legacy and preservation of classic films, as part of the 2018 TCM Classic Film Festival. The award will be presented on Thursday, April 26 during the film festival’s opening night.

Gabrielle Union inked a first look deal with Sony Pictures TV. Under the two-year agreement, Union’s production company, I’ll Have Another, will develop broadcast, cable and digital projects for Sony TV.
 
Arrow is undergoing a leadership change. Co-executive producer Beth Schwartz was promoted to EP and sole showrunner of The CW series’ upcoming seventh season.
 
Comedy Central released its 2018-2019 development slate, including two series pick-ups and five pilot orders. The slate is headlined by orders for sketch series Alternatino with Arturo Castro and stand-up series This Week at the Comedy Cellar.
 
OWN gave straight-to-series orders to scripted drama Ambitions and unscripted dating show Ready to Love, both from producer Will Packer and his Will Packer Media banner. Packer will serve as EP for both shows, which mark his first television series to be created under his first-look deal with the network.
 
Former head of programming, production and development at AT&T’s Audience Network, Bart Peters, launched Big Branch Productions. The company, which will produce original contract and platforms for film, TV and live-audience events, already has Audience Network’s Super Saturday Night with JLo, Audience Music and Loudermilk on its slate. In development are doc Who’s The Girl? The Story of Ashley Cleveland, live-event concert series March Madness Music Festival, unscripted The Sneaker Game, scripted Dry Hopping and live-action Cop Shit.
 
ABC gave a straight-to-series order of a spinoff based on The Goldbergs for 2018-2019.  Set in the 1990s, it will follow the teachers of William Penn Academy and star Tim Meadows, Bryan Callen and AJ Michalka.  
 
HomeAway, Inc. and CSS Entertainment have expanded their partnership to produce a second season of Vacation Rental Potential. The series, which premiered on A&E Network in December, became the most watched show in the network’s “home” category.
 
 
UPFRONTS UPDATE
 
BET Networks announced its upcoming programming slate for 2018-2019, which includes 21% more original programming than last year. Scripted series include drama American Soul, inspired by the personal trials and professional successes of a young, ambitious and troubled Don Cornelius; The Archer Connection (wt), following tech genius Archer Grant; and Boomerang, a BET and Paramount Television collaboration based on the 1992 American romantic comedy film.
 
On the unscripted series front, docuseries Finding Justice tells the stories of heroes, leaders and advocates for change in African American communities across America. Dream Team is based on Jack McCallum’s New York Times bestselling book that follows the 1992 U.S. Olympic Men’s Basketball team. Hybrid docu-music competition The Next Big Thing (wt) highlights producer Swizz Beats, Tina Davis, music veteran A&R Exec and Chris Brown putting up-and-coming artists through the ultimate development boot camp.
 
BET specials are also on the agenda, including BET Awards, moving into its 19th year; BET Experience, returning for its seventh year; and BET Hip Hop Awards. In addition, Black Girls Rock! features emerging and legendary talent, while celebrating the brilliance and beauty of Black women. Plus, the iconic brand that defined a generation, Soul Train Awards, returns with an awards show that delivers top talent and honors the best in R&B and soul.

Netflix stock hit a new high, rising 9% to close at $336.06. A year ago, it was trading at around $140. Subscriber growth has sparked investor interest, with global total cracking   125 million in the first quarter.
 
In other Netflix news, the streamer gave an order to The Order. The 10-episode horror drama series is from Canadian production company Nomadic Pictures. Show centers on a college freshman Jack Morton (Jake Manley), who joins fabled secret society The Order, where he’s trhust into a world of magic, monsters and intrigue.
 
Two channels from Cheddar are now on You Tube. In addition to the flagship financial-news network is newcomer Cheddar Big News. “Cheddar’s emphasis on tech and media news coverage make it a strong fit for the millennial, tech-savvy audience that also loves YouTube TV,” said Christian Oestlien, director of product for YouTube TV.

RATINGS
 
ABC’s Roseanne stood as the #1 show in both Total Viewers and A18-49 for the week of April 9, topping AMC’s season finale of The Walking Dead.
 
One Strange Rock’s April 9 episode earned a .50/428 P25-54 rating on Live+3, a season high performance among the demo. In addition, the National Geographic series generated more than 1 million viewers P2+, a double-digit increase over the previous episode.
 
Freeform’s Siren ranked among cable’s Top 5 gainers on Thursday in L+3 playback in Total Viewers (+98%) and A18-49 (+107%). It marked its largest playback lifts yet.
 
FOX News continued to dominated basic cable in total day with P2+ for the week of April 9, marking 14 consecutive weeks as the number one network, according to Nielsen. FNC ranked tops in both primetime and total day with P2+. In primetime, FNC garnered 2.7 million in total viewers and total day. FNC delivered 1.5 million total viewers.
 
In syndication, true crime leader Crime Watch Daily (0.5 demo rating, up 25%) captured attention with a big move in the target demo and approximately 1.3 million total viewers each day. Meanwhile, in access time periods, Extra (1.2, up 9%) saw the biggest percentage increase and was the sole magazine moving up week-to-week.

Game shows were tightly bunched with leader Family Feud (6.5, up 2%), Wheel of Fortune (6.3, up 3%) and Jeopardy (6.2, unchanged) in a close race.
 
Judge Judy (6.9) aired reruns all week yet grew 3% over the same frame last year. It was the highest rated program in syndication for the seventh week in a row and the top courtroom show with ratings greater than the other five nationally measured shows combined.
